This really reads like it was written by someone with ADD

This really reads like it was written by someone with ADD. Chapters are subdivided into small chunks that often have nothing to do with the chapter. During the chapter titled "Organization," there is a section about when to buy school supplies (late July for those who were curious). This chapter also contains a section for how to help kids prepare for a tutoring session, which is odd. Is this a book for people who work at Sylvan? It had some nice preparatory questions in it, but I was unsure why it was in this book. Another paragraph in the "Organization chapter is about making sure that you use Christmas break to recharge yourself and don't do any planning or teacher stuff. That sounds like a solid plan, but what does that have to do with making sure my students are organized or understanding why some of them have problems with organization?
Each chapter seems to jump around like this a bit. However, there are a few interesting tips here and there that make this a 2 star review and not a 1 star review. I just can't imagine how something this poorly written was printed and released to the public.

disappointing

The book is only aimed at upper elementary students and secondary students. It does not include anything useful for primary students. Many of the ideas would be good for first year general education teachers. Anyone with any experience would not benefit. Dissapointing.

Patricia Dischler is an author, speaker, and educator, sharing her 20 years of experience in the field of early childhood education and as owner of Patty Cake Preschool for 17 years, a nationally accredited family child care business. Dischler is a board member of the NAFCC, Wisconsin Family Child Care Association, and the Wisconsin Early Learning Coalition and was the recipient of the 2007 Wisconsin Governor’s Award for excellence in the field of child care.

About the Author

Ronald W. Rebore is a professor at Saint Louis University located in Saint Louis, Missouri. His professional experience includes 22 years as an administrator: nine years as an assistant superintendent of a medium suburban school district, five years as the superintendent of schools in a small suburban school district, and eight years as the superintendent of schools for a large metropolitan school district employing approximately 4,000 staff members with an annual budget of approximately $170 million.

He has taught graduate-level courses in educational leadership for approximately 20 years, including ethics courses. Rebore has over 30 publications. Two of his books have been translated into Chinese and have been adopted for use in preparing educational administrators in China. Rebore has a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy, a master's of education degree in counseling and guidance, and a doctor of philosophy degree in educational leadership.



Angela L. E. Walmsley is an assistant professor at Saint Louis University located in Saint Louis, Missouri. She has been working in the field of education for approximately 13 years. In that time, she has taught middle school and high school mathematics both in the United States and the United Kingdom; she has taught introductory education courses and graduate-level advanced education and mathematics education courses at two universities in the Saint Louis area; and she is currently teaching statistical and educational research courses at Saint Louis University.

Walmsley has a joint bachelor’s of science degree in mathematics and teaching from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; a master’s in education degree in mathematics education and a diploma in statistics from the University of Dublin: Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland; and a doctor of philosophy degree in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on mathematics education and educational research from Saint Louis University. In addition, she holds teaching certificates for the states of Illinois and Missouri, as well as Northern Ireland in the UK.

About the Author
Xiufeng Liu is Associate Professor of Science Education at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He received his doctorate in science education from the University of British Columbia in 1993. He was a high school chemistry teacher in China, a research associate at the China National Institute for Educational Research (CNIE), and a science teacher educator in Canada before his current position. He conducts research in the closely related areas of technology-enhanced science assessment, applications of measurement models in science education, conceptual change in science, and science curriculum policies. He has published over 30 refereed articles in key science education journals, 5 books, 15 book chapters, and presented numerous papers at national and international conferences. Dr. Liu teaches courses entitled Measurement and Evaluation of Science Teaching, Seminar on Science Teaching, Seminar on Science Curricula, and Technology for Science Teaching. In addition, he conducts an annual summer science assessment workshop for teachers, and is frequently invited to give talks and workshops on science assessment including Rasch measurement.

About the Author
Mike Wallace is a Professor of Public Management at Cardiff Business School, Cardiff University. He is an Associate Director of the Advanced Institute of Management Research (AIM), responsible for research capacity building in the management field. He is also the Economic and Social Research Council’s Strategic Adviser for Researcher Development. Mike is series editor of the Sage Learning to Read Critically series of books. His own research on managing change in the public services is reported in many books and academic journals.

Alison Wray is a Research Professor of Language and Communication at Cardiff University. Her research concerns the modelling of lexical storage and processing, particularly in relation to formulaic phrases, and it has been applied to language learning, evolution of language and language disability. Her two monographs Formulaic Language and the Lexicon (Cambridge University Press, 2002) and Formulaic Language: Pushing the Boundaries (Oxford University Press, 2008) are internationally acclaimed. Her current research is into dementia communication. She has a longstanding commitment to researcher training, including the developing of academic expertise. She is lead author of the popular undergraduate research methods textbook Projects in Linguistics (Hodder, 2012).

Great for doctoral students! Specially in the Social sciences

I am doctoral student in ed. It is always difficult to criticize authors ideas. But this but helped me to better analyze readings and papers, their main ideas so that i can do better literature reviews. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Elizabeth Hammerman is a dedicated science educator and consultant. Her professional background includes teaching science at the middle school and high school levels and over 20 years of experience teaching university science education courses and co-directing funded grant projects. She has done extensive professional development with teachers in the field, specializing in curriculum development and implementation, performance assessment, and effective teaching and learning. The need for high-quality professional development programs and materials in science education became apparent throughout the many projects and professional relationships with teachers who were eager to increase their knowledge base, skills, and confidence for teaching science more effectively.

Hammerman has co-authored a book on performance assessment in science and authored a database of science assessment tasks. She has published articles, presented programs at national conferences, consulted nationally, and developed curriculum and assessments for cutting-edge school districts and commercial products.

Since relocating to North Carolina in 1999, Hammerman has been a math/science consultant for a consortium of seven county school systems, has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education and science education, served as director of education and professional development for Virtual Learning Systems, and worked as a consultant for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She is actively involved in professional development and continues to work on a series of professional development books for science education for Corwin Press.

About the Author
Rodney P. Carlisle is Professor Emeritus at Rutgers University, where he taught in the History Department from 1966 to 2002.  H received his undergraduate degree in history from Harvard College and his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
