About the Author

Ronet Bachman, PhD, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. She is coauthor of Statistical Methods for Crime and Criminal Justice (3rd ed.), and coeditor of Explaining Crime and Criminology: Essays in Contemporary Criminal Theory. In addition, she is author of Death and Violence on the Reservation; coauthor of Stress, Culture, and Aggression in the United States; coauthor of Murder American Style; and coauthor of Violence: The Enduring Problem as well as numerous articles and papers that examine the epidemiology and etiology of violence, with a particular emphasis on women, the elderly, and minority populations. She is currently the Co-PI of a National Institute of Justice–funded study to examine the trajectories of drug-involved offenders 10 years after release from prison using a mixed-method design.

Russell K. Schutt, Ph.D., is Professor and Chair of Sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and Lecturer on Sociology in the Department of Psychiatry (Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center) at the Harvard Medical School. He completed his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. (1977) degrees at the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Sociology of Social Control Training Program at Yale University (1977–1979). In addition to Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research, now in its 6th edition, Making Sense of the Social World 3/e (with Dan Chambliss), and adaptations for the fields of social work (with Ray Engel) and criminology/criminal justice (with Ronet Bachman), he is the author of Organization in a Changing Environment, coeditor of The Organizational Response to Social Problems, and coauthor of Responding to the Homeless: Policy and Practice. He has authored and coauthored numerous journal articles, book chapters, and research reports on homelessness, service preferences and satisfaction, mental health, organizations, law, and teaching research methods. His recent funded research experience includes a National Cancer Institute-funded study of community health workers and recruitment for cancer clinical trials, and a National Institute of Mental Health-funded study of housing alternatives for homeless persons diagnosed with severe mental illness. His publications in peer-reviewed journals range in focus from the effect of social context on cognition, satisfaction and functioning to the service preferences of homeless persons and service personnel, the admission practices of craft unions, and the social factors in legal decisions.

Good CJ Book

I am a professor of CJ at a state university where I teach Research Design at the junior/senior level. I use this book in my class and the students seem to like it. Price is perfect for college level classes, especially in an age when the average textbook price is over $150.

The text hits the major research topics, and explanations are fairly good. I especially like the extra effort at including ethical and decision processes for students to consider. Too many text ignore ethical problems in research, so it's nice to have in a text like this.

My only complaint is the focus on criminology. It is a bit heavy. The publisher promises a "big picture" approach, but it isn't nearly as big as it could be. In short, the approach is more about criminology theory than it is about public policy analysis. I'd like to see more "real world" application in areas such as policy analysis, application research, and law enforcement management research.

I'd recommend this book for other instructors for two reasons: (1) price and (2) ease of reading. I've not published with Sage, so I don't have a reason to push their books. I've found that they generally produce usable products, and this text is no exception.

Best approach to methods

I teach out of this book, and can say that, for instructors who want their students to acquire a deep understanding of research methods, and of science itself, this book (and its various relatives, all with Schutt as author or co-author) is by far the best. It's also available bundled with SPSS.

About the Author
Frank E. Hagan is a native of the North Side of Pittsburgh and has earned degrees at Gannon, Maryland and Case Western Reserve. He is the Director of the James V. Kinnane Graduate Program in Administration of Justice and is the author of eight books. These are Deviance and the Family (with Marvin B. Sussman), Introduction to Criminology (7th edition), Crime Types and Criminals, Research Methods in Criminal Justice and Criminology (8th edition), Essentials of Research Methods in Criminal Justice, Political Crime, White Collar Deviance (with David Simon), and The Language of Research (with Pamela Tontodonato).
    He is also the author or coauthor of many journal articles and articles in edited volumes. Hagan is a recipient of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Fellow Award (2000), and awarded the Teacher's Excellence Award by Mercyhurst College in 2006. His major interests are research methods, criminology and organized crime, white collar crime and terrorism.

Awesome Book

I originally bought this book for a college class but upon reading it I have found that it is very interesting. With the examples of cases that correspond to the terms and topics discussed it makes the reader keep reading. Since this book was published recently the cases included are some recent ones that most have seen on the news or in the media.

Missing pages and outdated.

Outdated information. The book I received was missing 32 pages out of chapter 4, making it VERY difficult for assigned readings. Pages 143-174 were repeated.

About the Author
Ingrid Arnet Connidis is Professor of Sociology at the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada. In 2001, she spent a stimulating term at Oregon State University researching family gerontology as the recipient of the Petersen Visiting Scholar Award. Over the years she has explored. Her work has been published in a range of journals including Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Gerontology: Social Sciences, Research on Aging, Journal of Family Studies, Journal of Aging Studies, and the Canadian Journal on Aging. She has also contributed chapters to a range of books related to aging, family relations, and feminist scholarship. In 2004, she and Julie McMullin were awarded the Richard Kalish Innovative Publication Award from the Gerontological Society of America for their work on ambivalence (“Sociological Ambivalence and Family Ties: A Critical Perspective.” Journal of Marriage and Family, 2002:64:3:558-567). In her quantitative and qualitative research she has explored various facets of aging and family relationships including work-family balance, sibling ties, family ties across generations, the family ties of gay and lesbian adults, and step relationships.

This is a terrible textbook. I needed it for a senior course and it is very difficult to read. It's worse than a term paper written by a freshman with thesaurus. Professors looking for a textbook should not use this

I purchased this book for a university class. It served its sole purpose. It was easily read and well laid out. I only use the sections which were assigned for my class. I cannot say I went through it in its entirety. I did like that it was light, and paperback.

Learn more about Jackie Walsh's PD offerings

Jackie Walsh is an independent educational consultant who partners with educators across the country to enhance teaching and leading in classrooms, schools, and districts. Her passion and primary area of expertise is questioning―for both student and adult learning. Based in Montgomery, Alabama, Jackie is also the lead consultant for the Alabama Best Practices Center, which affords her the opportunity to work with networks of school teams, district teams, instructional partners, and superintendents.

 

Jackie’s early experience as a high school social studies teacher contributed to her passion for questioning. As a designer and facilitator of professional learning for teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators, she links quality questioning practices not only to student thinking and learning but also to adult learning and reflection. Her commitment is to collaborative design that customizes learning to the context of the learners. Her experience spans work in K-12, higher education, a regional research laboratory, and a state department of education.

 

The author and co-author of numerous books and articles focused on quality questioning, Jackie seeks to make research and best practice accessible to practitioners. Her books, co-authored with Beth Sattes, include: Quality Questioning, 2nd Edition (2017), Questioning for Classroom Discussion (2015), Thinking Through Quality Questioning (2011), Leading Through Quality Questioning (2010),  and Quality Questioning, 1st Edition (2005), She received her A.B. from Duke University, M.A.T. from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), and Ph.D. from the University of Alabama. Beth Dankert Sattes is a co-developer with Jackie Acree Walsh of Questioning and Understanding to Improve Learning and Thinking (QUILT), a nationally validated professional development program on effective questioning. They are also co-authors of Inside School Improvement (2000) and co-presenters of the Video Journal in Education series Questioning to Stimulate Thinking (1999). These two former classroom teachers have trained hundreds of administrators and teachers across the nation in effective questioning. Their other joint ventures have focused on creating effective professional development for educators, sharing leadership for continuous school improvement, and creating a culture for high-performance learning communities. A recent example of their work is the design and delivery of professional development for school improvement specialists―consultants or staff who work to develop the capacity of schools to improve achievement for all students. They have also developed professional development modules on improving school culture (for the Southern Regional Education Board) and leading learning communities (for the Alabama Leadership Academy). Beth Dankert Sattes holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in early childhood special education from Peabody College. Both Sattes and Walsh have served as faculty for the National Staff Development Council’s Academy.

Weak even if you are the authors' intended audience of teachers

About the Author

Susanna Hornig Priest, Ph.D., has taught mass communication theory and research methods at the undergraduate and graduate level beginning in 1989. She holds a doctoral degree in communications from the University of Washington, a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. Her own research is centered on the role of science in American society and culture, its expression in the mass media, public engagement in science and science policy, and public opinion formation. She is also interested in the social roles of new media technologies.

Priest has served as a member of the Research and Publications committees of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications and as chair and research chair of the Association’s Science Communication Interest Group. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, past associate editor of the journal Public Understanding of Science, and current editor of the journal Science Communication. She regularly serves as an advisor to a wide range of academic projects, government agencies, and private organizations on communication, public engagement, and public opinion issues, and reviews research submissions for a variety of academic organizations and scholarly journals. Her current research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and other sources.

Her publications include over 30 refereed research articles and nearly 20 book chapters, plus 2 books and the Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Communication, for which she served as General Editor. Currently, she is based in Camano Island, WA, and edits Science Communication.

It is not convenient to review an encyclopedia by reading it from A to Z and certainly this reviewer does not claim more than to have looked at a small selection of entries. The Encyclopedia of Science and Technology Communication has 1095 numbered pages (1144 claimed) and more than three hundred substantial entries. These entries are mainly of 1500 words or more, so topics are well developed. There is a good index and there are listings of entries and contributors as well as appendices of university science communication programs and an annotated bibliography which relates to some issues commonly discussed in science communication.

The contributors are in the main university academics from American universities and the science communication programs mentioned largely American programs, but there are a scattering of contributions from Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom. The format is large with double column pages on a good paper and with a tidy appearance, making the encyclopedia comfortable to read. There is little illustration, but every entry has relevant extra readings recommended.

Who does this encyclopedia aim to inform? The encyclopedia is said to inform a broad audience of graduate and undergraduate students in communications, mass media, and journalism as well as postgraduate practitioners. The key themes of the encyclopedia are wide-ranging and include:

Such students have a range of backgrounds so the encyclopedia is particularly useful to those who have limited exposure to scientific concepts. Because of the wide range of topics that science journalists might need to write about, the choice of entries for such a venture is difficult and there is little doubt that some will find problems with some omissions and duplication. However there are few rival publications in the field of science and technology communication. Perhaps future editions might interconnect the various entries where similar topics are mentioned.

However the encyclopedia is an excellent start and should be purchased by university and general libraries, with some school libraries giving it consideration as it could be very useful in helping senior students with their projects.

About the Author

Gary N. Powell, Ph.D., is Professor of Management, Ackerman Scholar, and Director of the Ph.D. Program in the School of Business at the University of Connecticut. He is author of Women and Men in Management (4th ed.), editor of Handbook of Gender and Work, and author of Managing a Diverse Workforce: Learning Activities (3rd ed.). He is an internationally recognized scholar and educator on gender and diversity issues in the workplace. His graduate course on women and men in management won an award on innovation in education from the Committee on Equal Opportunity for Women of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). He also has won the University of Connecticut School of Business Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award (three times) and Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award. He has received the University of Connecticut President's Award for Promoting Multiculturalism. 

He has served as Chair of the Women in Management (now Gender and Diversity in Organizations) Division of the Academy of Management and received both the Janet Chusmir Service Award for his contributions to the division and the Sage Scholarship Award for his contributions to research on gender in organizations. He has published over 110 articles in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Journal of Business Venturing, and Personnel Psychology; contributed over 25 chapters to edited volumes; and presented over 130 papers at professional conferences. He is a Fellow of the British Academy of Management and Eastern Academy of Management. He has served on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management and as President of the Eastern Academy of Management. He has served on the Editorial Board of Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, and Academy of Management Executive.   

Prior to joining the faculty at UConn, he worked at General Electric, graduating from its Manufacturing Management Program. At GE, he designed and implemented automated project scheduling systems as well as systems for inventory control, materials procurement, and so on. He has provided management training and development for many companies, including Webster Financial Corp., The Hartford Financial Services Group, The Implementation Partners (TIP), GE-Capital, General Signal, Apple Computer, Monroe Auto Equipment, AllState, and CIGNA, and has conducted numerous other workshops.He holds a doctorate in organizational behavior and a master's degree in management science from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor's degree in management from MIT.

Worst book I've ever read

This book is terrible. Sources cited are on average 20 years old! The man references his own works 50+ times. This book has no modern vision of today's workforce making it quite obvious Gary Powell has not worked in a real job (outside of teaching) for 30+ years. I would not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a real source of modern diversity issues. He wrote this book nothing more than required reading for his class (which I also wouldn't recommend wasting time and money on).

Mandatory reference for the study of aging

This 2008 edited text contains a great deal of up to date research on neuropsychology, neurophysiology, and the issue of cognitive decline associated with aging. The chapter by Christopher Hertzog is particularly good. This book is a mandatory library addition for any psychologist, neurophysiologist, physician, or other clinician involved with older adults.
