About the Author
Evan M. Berman is Distinguished University Professor at National Chengchi University in Taipei (Taiwan). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of ASPA Book Series in Public Administration & Public Policy (Taylor & Francis), Senior Editor of Public Performance & Management Review and a Distinguished Fulbright Scholar. His areas of expertise are human resource management, public performance, and local government, and international interests have now taken him to Asia. He has over 100 publications and 10 books, including Public Administration in East Asia: Mainland China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (CRC Press, 2010), People Skills At Work (CRC Press, 2011, with Dira Berman), Encyclopedia of Public Administration and Public Policy, Third Edition (Taylor & Francis, 2007), and Essential Statistics for Public Managers and Policy Analysts, Second Edition (CQ Press, 2006). He is past Chair of the American Society for Public Administration’s Section of Personnel and Labor Relations, and also a former policy analyst with the National Science Foundation. He was previously the Huey McElveen Distinguished Professor at Louisiana State University, and has assisted local jurisdictions on matters of team building, strategic planning, and citizen participation.

Jonathan P. West is professor of political science and Director of the Graduate Public Administration Program at the University of Miami. His research interests include human resource management, productivity, local government, and ethics. He has published 8 books and over 100 scholarly articles and book chapters. American Public Service: Radical Reform of the Merit System (Taylor & Francis, 2007), The Ethics Edge (2006) and the Professional Edge (M.E. Sharpe, 2009) are his most recent co-authored or co-edited books. His coauthored book titled American Politics and the Environment was published by Addison Wesley/Longman in 2002. He is Managing Editor of Public Integrity and a member of the editorial board of two other professional journals. He has experience as a management analyst working for the Office of the Surgeon General, Department of the Army.

James S. Bowman is professor of public administration at Florida State University. His primary area is human resource management, complemented by work in ethics and quality management. He is author of over 100 journal articles and book chapters as well as editor of six anthologies. He is coauthor of The Professional Edge (M. E. Sharpe, 2009). He is Editor in Chief of Public Integrity, a journal of the American Society for Public Administration and serves on the editorial boards of three other professional journals. A Kellogg Foundation Fellow and a past Fellow of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration, he has a background in business as well as experience in both the military and civil service.

Montgomery Van Wart is professor and Chair of the Public Administration Department at California State University San Bernardino. His publications include seven books and a substantial number of articles in the leading journal in his field. Dynamics of Leadership in Public Service: Theory and Practice (M.E. Sharpe, 2005) was designated the award “Outstanding Academic Title” by Choice. His research areas are administrative leadership, human resource management, training and development, administrative values and ethics, organization behavior, and general management. He also serves on numerous editorial boards and as the Associate Editor for Public Productivity & Management Review. As an instructor, he has spent as much time teaching and facilitating programs for executives and managers in public agencies as he has teaching graduate students. His training programs have been for individuals in all levels of government in the United States and executives and elected officials from foreign countries.

Kindle version letdown.

I need this book for required reading in a graduate level human resource class. I need the 3rd edition for class, however, in viewing the description of this book, I also noticed that I could download the kindle version for my iPad. It turns out that it is not the third edition. I now wonder what Im missing with the iPad version. A little disappointing. Usually I am extremely satisfied with Amazon.com. So much for technology.

About the Author

Lynne Schrum is Dean of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Previously, she was the Dean of the College of Education and Human Services at West Virginia University. Prior to that, she was a professor and coordinator of elementary education in the College of Education and Human Development at George Mason University. Her research and teaching focus on preparing teachers for the 21st century, appropriate uses of information technology, and leadership in a digital world. She has written eleven books and numerous articles on these subjects; the most recent is How 2, Web 2: How to for Educators. Schrum served on AERA’s Council, was editor of the Journal of Research on Technology in Education (JRTE) (2002-2012), and is a past-president of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).

Barbara Levin has been a Professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) since 1993. She was an elementary school teacher for 17 years before earning her Ph.D. at the University of California-Berkeley. Dr. Levin served as the Director of the Teachers Academy at UNCG, assistant department chair, and director of graduate studies. She was awarded the first Mentoring-Advising-Supervising (MAS) Award in the School of Education at UNCG. Dr. Levin also served as an Associate Editor for Teacher Education Quarterly for 8 years, and was co-PI on a 5-year, $1.4 million National Professional Development grant from the Dept. of Education called TESOL for ALL. Her research interests include: understanding how teachers’ pedagogical beliefs develop across their careers; case-based teaching; problem-based learning (PBL); universal design for learning (UDL); and leading, teaching, and learning with technology. Dr. Levin has published eight books and over 40 articles in well-respected research journals.

Leading 21st Century Schools

I read this book for as required reading for an Instructional Technology Leadership graduate class that I am enrolled in. As a future elementary special education teacher, this is not a book that I would typically seek out. However, I think this book is possibly more useful for an individual like myself, than someone who is already a technology leader or the educator with a technologically oriented mindset. The book is well organized and easily accessable even for someone like myself with limited tehcnological expertise.

The book is divided into three sections. The first section is dedicated to presenting information on why it is so important to move towards a more technologically focused education system. The second section concentrates on what can and should be included in this new vision of education. This section strongly emphasises the great potential that the Web 2.0 tools has for educators and students. The final section presents topics relating to the practical considerations involved in being a leader int the 21st Century school.

The book makes a strong case for the importance of changing the focus of the traditional school to include 21st Century skills and technologies. More importantly, the book includes tools, and several real examples to assist the educators who want to play a part in leading their schools in this direction. I often felt mildly inspired and strongly motivated by the examples that the authors presented. I found my mind racing to find ways to implement the tools and strategies in a special education setting. I look forward to using this information in my education career.

The book Leading 21st Century Schools: Harnessing Technology for Engagement and Achievement, by Lynne Schrum and Barbara Levin, is a good resource for educators and school leaders who want to integrate technology into the school setting, following the lines of the National Educational Technology Standards for Administrators. The authors clearly describe and explain the use of Web 2.0 tools for administrative tasks, as well as for teachers and students. Strategies for several content areas specifically within the K-12 curriculum are provided. At the end of each chapter, there is a useful set of activities to consider using within the school and materials to consult online to expand upon the different topics. Also, at the end of the book there is a complete glossary of technological terms and a list of Web 2.0 tools and online resources classified by content area. The authors focus on collaborative, communicative, and creative skills through the use of online tools and provide an overview of legal and ethical issues such as copyright or fair use, as well as safety considerations.

Technological issues and terms are explained in a simple language, so the text is easy to read. I would recommend this book to educators that are not familiar with technology. I enjoyed reading about several different aspects of technology within the educational setting. Even though the strategies for effective use of technology within the diverse content areas are K-12 oriented, I believe this is a good resource as well for a college faculty. Since evidence from research is presented with references throughout the book, this is a source that I would also recommend to graduate students of instructional technology.

About the Author
Vernon G. Zunker, (Ed.D. University of Houston, postdoctoral training at the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, where he completed a residency in clinical psychology) is professor emeritus, Texas State University. Dr. Zunker had a joint appointment during most of his tenure at Texas State University where he was Director of the Counseling Center for 18 years and taught graduate courses in counseling for 24 years. In addition, he established a student learning resource center, a career development resource center, and was instrumental in the development of a testing center and the university's credit-by-examination program. Dr. Zunker, a licensed psychologist, was also a consultant to the Texas Rehabilitation Commission for more than two decades. He was a member of statewide committee for several years that was charged with the responsibility of selecting psychological assessment instruments for the state vocational rehabilitation testing program that established eligibility of its clients. He has written seven editions of Career Counseling: A Holistic Approach (5th edition translated into Chinese, and 6th edition translated into Korean,) four editions of Using Assessment for Career Development and three editions as co-author. He has also authored two editions of A Dream Come True: Robert Hugman and San Antonio's Riverwalk (translated into Japanese.) He considers his almost 3 years of sailing in the Merchant Marine as one of his greatest learning experiences. He often told his students that as a teenager on his own in a number of foreign countries, he learned to appreciate the significance of cultural differences. He and his wife Rosalie and canine companion, Toddi, reside in San Antonio.

Needs drastic editing

While this book is thorough, it contains a great deal of repetitive phrases and information and way too many references, almost as if the writer feels defensive about taking anyone elses idea. I understand this thoroughness, but the book is repetitive to the point of being maddening. I have to read it for school and I keep having to put it down. Other Graduate students feel similarly. Way too long and dense. We find we have to make charts to simplify the deliniations in the material because there's so much wordiness to wade through.

I had to purchase this book for Career Counseling Master level course. I'd rather read for pleasure but it is a good book and keeps my interest. Good information.

About the Author
Richard Gargiulo is a Professor of Special Education in the School of Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has a Master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 1999, he was awarded the University's President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has also served as a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic and has authored numerous books on the subjects of special education, early childhood education, and child abuse and neglect.

Some good information, but waaaaay watered down

This book is 692 pages and, I swear, it could be 69. The chapters are very tedious to read, though there is some useful information in it and ideas that anyone interested in the topic needs to know, but it seems like there'd have to be a more interesting and less repetitive (not to mention cheaper) way to do it. Typical dry, dry, dry textbook (the sole exception being the accounts by real people of their experiences with family members with special needs..those were very interesting and moving).

About the Author
Maryln Appelbaum is well-known internationally as an outstanding authority on children, education, and families. She has worked as a teacher, an administrator, and a therapist and has been a consultant throughout the United States. How to Handle Hard-To-Handle Parents

I love Maryln Applebaum and this book is a great guide when you have difficult parents, or more importantly: how NOT to get to that point with a parent! I liked this book because it was short and to the point, giving examples and practical ways to use the suggestions.

About the Author
C. Augustus “Gus” Martin is Assistant Vice President for Faculty Affairs at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where he is also the former chair of the Department of Public Administration & Public Policy. He has served on the faculty of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs, University of Pittsburgh, where he was an Administration of Justice professor. His research and professional interests are terrorism and extremism, juvenile justice, administration of justice, and fair housing. He has served as a panelist for university and community symposia and interviews on the subjects of administration of justice, terrorism, and fair housing. He has also been a consultant to government and private agencies. Prior to joining academia, he was a “floor” legislative assistant to Congressman Charles B. Rangel of New York and Special Counsel to the Attorney General of the U.S. Virgin Islands. In addition, he served as managing attorney for the Fair Housing Partnership of Greater Pittsburgh, where he was also director of a program created under a federal consent decree to desegregate public and assisted housing.

The second updated edition of UNDERSTANDING TERRORISM: CHALLENGES, PERSPECTIVES, AND ISSUES is an excellent purchase for both college-level reference holdings and for assigned reading for college-level courses on social issues. Added here is a new chapter on religious terrorism, reviews of new material on gender terrorism and criminal businesses, updates on pedagogy, and a format which includes test questions, amps from the book, and more on both a CD-ROM and an accompanying web site. Plenty of examples from events around the world pepper surveys which cover the politics, economics, and social foundations of international terrorist experiences.
