About the Author
Peggy Hammeken began her career as an elementary teacher in the American Embassy School in Mexico City. Upon return to the United States, she taught students in the areas of specific learning disabilities, mental retardation, and emotional/behavior disorders. With the implementation of inclusive education, she was involved with the set-up of inclusive programs and staff development and training for educators and paraprofessionals. She has authored three books on the subject. Hammeken received her elementary teaching degree and her master’s degree in special education from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Hammeken founded Peytral Publications, Inc., a publishing house focusing on inclusive education of students.

This book has lots of helpful information and forms. I found some of the advice to be condescending and the forms can't be adapted on my computer- just printed so it loses a star for those qualities. (one example: First tip for communicating with teachers you work with was "Think before you speak". Really?!) Overall it is an excellent overview of important issues like confidentiality, IEP process, thoughts on inclusion and so on.

About the Author
Fred E. Jandt (Ph.D., Bowling Green State University) is Professor of Communication at CSU San Bernardino. He was a visiting professor at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand and has also taught at SUNY-Brockport (where he became SUNY’s first director of faculty development). For SAGE, he is the author of a best-selling introductory textbook, An Introduction to Intercultural Communication: Identities in a Global Community, 4/e (2004), and the editor of Intercultural Communication: A Global Reader (2004); in addition, he’s also the author of Win-Win Negotiating (1985, Wiley; translated into 7 languages), Effective Interviewing for Paralegals, 2/e (1994, Anderson), Straight Answers to People Problems (1993, McGraw-Hill), Conflict Resolution through Communication (1975, Harper Collins) and co-editor of Constructive Conflict Management: Asia-Pacific Cases (1996). He attends and presents at major national and international conferences.

This is a great book to learn about intercultural communication. It has lots of information, pictures, examples and stories that help you understand more about other cultures and ethnics. Good combination with a knowledgeable teacher! ;-)

Informative and Knowledgeable

I had to have this book for my college class. I found that this is a great book to learn about the subject since it has so much information, pictures, examples and stories that help you understand more about other cultures and ethnics. It is so informative about all the cultures out there, weather it be one that you hear about everyday or ones that you never heard of before. Such great information to have especially if you plan on traveling around the world - having the knowledge when traveling could save you from insulting someone!

Obviously cultures are always changing and new ones are being created - therefore its always a good idea to keep updating the books and getting the newest information out there.

Best Cross Cultural Communication book I've read

This book describes the effect of culture on sensing, perception, selection, organization, and interpretation. I also learned that cross cultural communication as a field has a lot of statistical information that allowed one to see the ratings the countries had on various characteristics. The information that I found in the book was arranged in such a way that I could read a page or two each day and still learn something new or interesting. I also liked the information I found near the end of the book on the four types of marriages: traditional, independent, separate, and mixed.
Overall, this book is a good read! I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Dr. Heesoon Jun has a Mater’s degree in psychology from Radford University in Virginia and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Washington in Washington. Currently ,she resides in Washington State where she is a licensed psychologist with a part-time private practice and teaches psychology at Evergreen State College including multicultural counseling.

Dr. Jun was born and raised by a religiously tolerant but race/class biased family in Seoul, South Korea. She came to the United States alone to study psychology as an undergraduate where she experienced her status change from the majority to the minority, and privileged to oppressed. Dr. Jun’s bicultural and bilingual experiences have been instrumental in facilitating an interest in, (a) the impact of sociocultural contexts on one’s own values, beliefs, and automatic thoughts; and (b) how to implement social justice and equity for diversified populations.

Needs an update Pathetically out of date regarding trans and queer issues. Straight up says that transmen "sleep with women" and transwomen "sleep with men". Confuses gender and sexuality. Confuses "competence" with "acceptance". Does fairly well with racial social justice education, particularly Korean American (as it is author's heritage). But author needs to learn more about GLTBQAI or not claim to be competent in those areas.

I use this as one of three books in my social justice class. I enjoy the way the writer breaks down the material- it seems to really help the students with the concepts in the book. It also offers great activities and exercises the students seem to be participating in on their own time.

About the Author
Evelyn Rothstein has been an educational consultant specializing in teaching writing across the curriculum for the past twenty years. With a background in classroom teaching and a specialization in linguistics and language development, she has trained teachers and implemented her strategy-based Writing As Learning and Write for Mathematics programs in hundreds of schools and school districts throughout the United States. She is the author of numerous books and articles, including Writing as Learning and Write for Mathematics. Rothstein is a graduate of the City University of New York and Teachers College, Columbia University with degrees in education, speech, reading, and psycholinguistics.

Andrew S. Rothstein has had a distinguished career as a teacher, administrator, and researcher. His diverse and enriching experiences in international schools, special education, public schools, and consulting have given him a broad perspective of the contexts in which children learn. As an author and presenter, he has achieved wide acclaim for his work in improving school performance by focusing on improving instruction and its supervision. His work in integrating many subject areas through writing has been highly effective in improving test scores in districts across the country. As principal, Rothstein led site-based improvements that resulted in strong increases in student academic performance. While superintendent of a regional school serving children with severe physical disabilities and health impairments, Rothstein reorganized staff development, created new curricula, and integrated technology into the instructional program for children for children from prekindergarten through high school. He has been an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University and Touro College. Rothstein earned a master's degree in special education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a doctorate in educational administration from New York University.

This book helps put the thought of "teaching in isolation" to rest! It gives relevance to language and helps students and teachers realize the practical reasons for learning grammar while understanding the history of language. Chapter 7 particularly brings "A world of understanding" to grammar!

Giving students the background knowledge necessary for connecting the history of grammar to relevant, real world learning, makes the process practical and meaningful for all children.

The book is very informative about the usual grammar and punctuation information but it also includes linguistics, semantics, syntax and lots more! This book is great for people learning English as well as people who just want to review the core of the English language. I also like the fact that it explains everything in a way that's easy to understand but not too basic to bore an adult learner like myself.

About the Author
William Gerin received his BA in Psychology from Stanislaus State College in Turlock, California, in 1979, where his specialty was in operant and classical conditioning avoidance models in animals. He then became interested in studying the role of human interactions in emotional regulation and received his PhD in Social Psychology from Columbia University in 1984 under the mentorship of Stanley Schachter. In 1985, he undertook an NIH-sponsored postdoctoral fellowship in cardiovascular epidemiology at the Cornell University Medical Center, where he studied with Thomas Pickering. He then went on to Mount Sinai Hospital, and then (back to) Columbia University, until 2007. He has now moved his laboratory to Department of Biobehavioral Health at the Pennsylvania State University, where he Professor of Biobeahvioral Health, and is the director of the Experimental Cardiovascular Psychophysiology Laboratory. His current research areas include the examination of acute biological responses to stress and negative emotionality, including blood pressure, heart rate variability, cortisol, endothelial function, and inflammatory markers. His other areas of study include the role of emotional regulation in the development of hypertension and coronary heart disease; behavioral interventions to improve medication adherence in culturally diverse patient populations; health disparities in cardiovascular disease, and the role of psychosocial factors in cardiovascular disease.

Just the facts...

This is a pretty nuts and bolts approach to preparing an NIH grant and reads much like the pages on the NIH websites. It has nicely brought together a lot of the detailed information (different types of grants, different application deadlines, etc) that is on the NIH websites and into a somewhat more user friendly format. But do not think about buying this book to help you actually WRITE a grant. This is for novices who don't know a K01 from a P01. If looking for help in preparing the best possible grant, I suggest the books by Ogden or Yang.

Good, but could be better

This book is a great overview of NIH grant writing, which programs you should submit your grant to and so forth.

However, the grant writing strategies are heavily focused on clinical studies an not basic science, so the last third of the book is only of modest use to those writing basic bench science grants.

The first half of the book is great for navigating all of the different NIH programs and deciding which program is best for you depending on which stage you are at in you career. This part of the book is very valuable since the NIH can be a bit of a maze.

I gave this a 3-star because the book claims to be much more than it really is. If you are submitting a clinical research grant, then this is the book for you. However, if you are a basic biomedical bench scientist, I would consider other of the books out there. Also there is almost no discussion of what to do after you submit, how to respond to criticism and improve your chances of being funded. This is almost half of the battle of getting a grant.

The Best Manual Around

I am surprised by the low rating. I completely disagaree. I highly recommend this book, escpically for beginners like me. If you are just starting or already in the world of grant writing, this book is a MUST. It takes the unceratinty and stress out of writing and the daunting task ahead. If you don't know where to start and need guidenace along the way without hiring a grant writer or delegating the responsibility to someone else in your organization, then get this book. I've scanned other books in this area, and they do not come close to what this book offers.
