About the Author
Elaine K. McEwan is an educational consultant with The McEwan-Adkins Group, offering professional development for educators to assist them in meeting the challenges of literacy learning in Grades Pre K-6. A former teacher, librarian, principal, and assistant superintendent for instruction in several suburban Chicago school districts, Elaine is the award-winning and best-selling author of more than three dozen books for educators. McEwan lives with her husband and business partner, E. Raymond Adkins, in Oro Valley, Arizona. Between them, Elaine and Ray have five children, fifteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

About the Author

Ann C. Barbour is professor emerita of early childhood education at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA). A former preschool and elementary teacher, she has over 30 years’ experience in the field of early education. At CSULA, she teaches courses in best practices and trends and issues in early education, the role of play in learning, and school-family partnerships. She has coauthored two books: Prop Box Play: 50 Themes to Inspire Dramatic Play and Portfolio Assessment: A Handbook for Preschool and Elementary Teachers, as well as numerous articles on early childhood education.

Barbour has worked with teachers, district administrators, parent representatives, and her own students in learning-at-home projects based on materials children take home from school. She also helped develop the Peabody Award-winning television series, A Place of Our Own and Los Niños en Su Casa, and was content advisor for each of the 325 episodes produced in English and in Spanish. These series are designed to help parents and caregivers nurture the development and enrich the learning experiences of preschool-age children. They are broadcast daily on public television stations throughout the nation.

Glasgow's experience includes serving as a secondary school science and art teacher both in California and New York, as a university biotechnology teaching laboratory director and laboratory technician, and as an educational consultant and frequent speaker on many educational topics. Cathy D. Hicks most recently directed the Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) program for the San Dieguito Union High School District in Southern California. She oversaw an induction program supporting beginning teachers. She served for ten years on the executive board of the California Association of School Health Educators (CASHE) and has been an adjunct faculty member at California State University at San Marcos. She is co-author of five books: What Successful Teachers Do: 91 Research-Based Strategies for New and Veteran Teachers (2003); What Successful Mentors Do: 81 Research- Based Strategies for New Teacher Induction, Training, and Support (2005); What Successful Teachers Do in Inclusive Classrooms: 60 Research-Based Strategies That help Special Learns (2005); and What Successful Teachers Do in Diverse Classrooms: 71 Research-Based Strategies for New and Veteran Teachers (2006); What Successful Teachers Do: 101 Research-Based Strategies for new and Veteran Teachers (2009).She is a frequent presenter on educational topics both at the state and national level. She taught Physical Education and Health at both the middle and high school level for more than 25 years. During that time, she was involved in the California State Mentor Teacher Program and mentored new teachers in her district for more than 17 years. Her energy, enthusiasm, and passion for teaching and supporting new teachers reinforce the career path she chose in elementary school. She believes the most effective teachers are the ones who never settle for “good enough,” but continue to grow, stretch, reflect, create, collaborate, and take risks throughout their teaching career.

About the Author
Nancy Fichtman Dana is currently Professor of Education in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and has been studying practitioner inquiry for the last twenty years.  During this time, she has developed and taught classes on practitioner research for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students, coached the practitioner research of numerous educators from various districts across the nation, as well as published nine books and over 50 book chapters and articles in professional journals focused on teacher and principal professional development and practitioner inquiry.

I rarely use textbooks in my courses, but I am delighted with this one, and my students have responded very well. It is written in a clear and accessible way, and includes many very helpful examples of real leaders making valuable changes through the process of action research. The activities are also very useful - I rarely use activities from a book, but the protocols Professor Dana offers have generated some great discussions in my class. I highly recommend this book both for classroom work, and also for districts and school leaders looking to move towards an inquiry-based culture that is substantive, not superficial.

Kindle without page numbers

I am taking a course and this is required reading I was delighted to get it on kindle. I was pretty upset though to find it does not have pages so when the instructor assigned pages to read I cannot find it and have to more or less guess. The material is good but the not finding the assigned pages to read is a big headache. So if you are taking this book for a class. Get the book rather than the kindle.

This is a timely book. The book's subject, managing diversity in a global workplace, portends the future for a growing area of social work policy and practice. The author frames a compelling logic undergirding a worldwide movement for inclusiveness. The body of the text is presented in three sections: Part I, the global context for diversity management; part II, a social psychological perspective on workplace diversity; and part III, managing a diverse workforce in the global context--the inclusive workplace. Highlights of the book include a clearly developed conceptual model with definitions of diversity that integrate global workforce diversity management at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels. A range of policy and direct practice implications flow from the model.

The book has numerous real-life examples and case vignettes illustrating and reinforcing the author's premise of a diverse, inclusive global workforce. Added support is found in relevant literature from selected countries. Covered throughout the text and summarized in succinct tables are worldwide legislation against sexual orientation discrimination, prohibiting sexual harassment, affirming universal human rights, and promoting affirmative action. About the Author

Michàlle E. Mor Barak, PhD is a professor at the University of Southern California with a joint appointment at the School of Social Work and the Marshall School of Business. She holds the Lenore Stein-Wood and William S. Wood professorship of Social Work and Business in a Global Society, Chairs the Social Work and Business Program, and is the director of the Doctoral Program. Professor Mor Barak received numerous awards of distinction, including a Fulbright award, the Lady Davis award for international exchange scholars, the University of California Regents Award, and the Franklin C. Sterlin Distinguished Faculty Award for Research and Scholarship.

She has been invited to give keynote addresses and received grants to lead several prestigious conferences around the world, such as a keynote address at the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) global diversity conference, the Rockefeller Foundation’s award to lead an international conference on global workforce diversity in Bellagio, Italy, and the Borchard Foundation’s grant to lead a global think tank of scholars on diversity management at the Chateau de la Bretesche, France. A principal investigator on several large research projects, she has published numerous articles in the areas of global diversity, workforce inclusion and work-life balance, and has authored two other books: Social Networks and Health (Garland, 1991) and Social Services in the Workplace (Haworth, 2000).

managing Diversity for Competitive Advantage

Several distinguishing feature of this very good book on diversity deliver value to the reader. Firstly, the book goes into the causal roots of workplace exclusion practices of employers as also their consequences. The analysis focuses on the groups that are commonly excluded in different parts of the world. Secondly, the book provides latest information on changing workplace realities across countries, including aspects of legislation, demography, and developments in social policy. This has been done through analyses, vignettes and case studies from different parts of the world. Thirdly, the book envisages a comprehensive "inclusive workplace model" which among others includes policies, procedures, and programmes that can help implement development of an inclusive workplace. Fourthly, the book gives cogent explanation for developing globally diverse workforce as a business case. Fifthly, it carries both theoretical content and practical propositions. The book has included some thoughtful illustrations and practical solutions to problems involved in developing a globally inclusive workplace.

While the book has the above-mentioned merits, I must add that the the author's definition of diversity could have been wider so as to include differences related with individual idiosyncrasies, competencies, roles, needs and mindsets as well? She has dealt with group differences such as those associated with race, age, sex, region, nationality, disability, sexual orientation, etc. Of course, that might have made her project heavier.

Overall, the book is a very useful resource for conceptualizing and implementing an inclusive workplace agenda. It reflects a global perspective and will interest readers across countries. The book has demonstrated well that when diversity and inclusion are being practiced as business strategies, they help in providing competitive advantage. It rightly suggests that in order to meaningfully practice DM people must be educated and held accountable for demonstrating new behaviours and competencies envisaging support for a diverse and inclusive workplace.

Commending Michalle Mor Barak's Managing Diversity

Mor Barak's Managing Diversity is a seminal work because of her contextualizing diveristy in terms of global inclusiveness. Not only does the book provide information and incisive insights, but is comprehensive in covering the topic and citing the very best of the current literature in the field.

This book will appeal to anyone who desires to heighten their awareness of this topic and be completely up to date with the literature (and ahead in some respects). The book will be particularly useful in undergraduate and graduate courses that feature diversity, globalization or understanding the complexity of the work force. In such courses, it could serve as the primary or one of the primary texts. For more general courses on business, management, social services, public administration and non-profit management, the book would fill a vital gap created by the paucity of focus on the topic (one chapter on diversity or multiculturalism in a management text is not enough to prepare students for an increasingly diverse and inclusive environment).

I recommend the interested reader and educator peruse the table of contents and materials presented here. This will surely inform them of the meticulousness of Mor Barak's coverage of the topic and tempt them with the promise of new and insightful knowledge-- a promise she delivers on in a well-written and easy to understand style. I commend this book to you.

Assessment by a civil rights Judge

I write as a retired federal Administrative Judge who decided hundreds of employment discrimination cases and spoke at scores of conferences and forums on the subject of diversity. Today, I teach social work and law at USC and rely upon this book as a primary text. I strongly recommend Dr. Morbarak's excellent volume as a well written, understandable and thoughtful guide to both employers and employees to understand the values and to avoid or respond to conflicts of the modern workplace. She has provided insights, explanations, and models for dealing with situations in the increasingly globalized world of work.

About the Author
Robert K. Conyne, Ph.D., William A. Allen Boeing Endowed Chair & Distinguished Professor, Seattle University, 2013-14 and Professor Emeritus from the University of Cincinnati, is a licensed psychologist, clinical counselor, and fellow of the Association for Specialists in Group Work (ASGW) and the American Psychological Association. He has amassed 42 years of professional experience as a university professor and department head, counselor, administrator, consultant, and trainer, and, most recently, as a consultant to military personnel and their families at U.S. installations both at home and overseas. Bob has received many awards, including Eminent Career Award from the ASGW; Lifetime Achievement Award in Prevention, Society of Counseling Psychology of the APA; Distinguished Alumni Award of Distinction from Purdue University; and has been designated a Soros International Scholar. He was the 2009 president of the APA's Division of Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy, and in 1996 was president of the Association for Specialists in Group Work. With over 200 scholarly publications and presentations including 14 books in his areas of expertise (group work, prevention, and ecological counseling), along with broad international consultation in these areas, Bob is recognized as an expert in working with people and systems. With colleague (and wife), Lynn S. Rapin, Ph.D., he also helps people plan and prepare psychologically for their upcoming retirement, using the holistic approach they developed, "Charting Your Personal Future." His most recent publication is the Prevention Practice Kit, co-edited with Arthur M. Horne, Ph.D., immediately preceded by the Handbook of Group Counseling (edited, Oxford University Press, 2011).  Forthcoming is the Group Work Practice Kit (edited, Sage).  In all these edited books, Bob also authored contributions.

If you are involved in any aspect of prevention programs this is the book for you! Whether you are designing a program or you are a participant, the roadmap outlined in this book helps you every step of the way. No stone is left unturned, this book really makes you peel apart every layer and identify exactly what it is you should be doing at each step of the process and how to best evaluate your work against your desired outcomes. Use of this book doesn't end with formalized prevention program planning and development, utilizing this book encourages you to think differently about each smaller project you encounter both as a developer and as a participant.

About the Author

John Fox is professor of sociology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Fox earned a PhD in sociology from the University of Michigan in 1972, and prior to arriving at McMaster, he taught at the University of Alberta and at York University in Toronto, where he was cross-appointed in the sociology and mathematics and statistics departments and directed the university's statistical consulting service. He has delivered numerous lectures and workshops on statistical topics in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, at such places as the summer program of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, the Oxford University Spring School in Quantitative Methods for Social Research, and the annual meetings of the American Sociological Association. Much of his recent work has been on formulating methods for visualizing complex statistical models and on developing software in the R statistical computing environment. He is the author and co-author of many articles, in such journals as Sociological Methodology, Sociological Methods and Research, The Journal of the American Statistical Association, The Journal of Statistical Software, The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, Statistical Science, Social Psychology Quarterly, The Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology, and The Canadian Journal of Sociology. He has written a number of other books, including Regression Diagnostics (SAGE, 1991), Nonparametric Simple Regression (SAGE, 2000), Multiple and General-ized Nonparametric Regression (SAGE, 2000), A Mathematical Primer for Social Statistics (SAGE, 2008), and, with Sanford Weisberg, An R Companion to Applied Regression, Second Edition (SAGE, 2010). Fox also edits the SAGE Quantitative Applications in the Social Sciences (QASS) monograph series.



Sanford Weisberg is Professor of Statistics at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  He is also director of the University’s Statistical Consulting Service for Liberal Arts, and has worked with literally hundreds of social scientists and others on the statistical aspects of their research.  Professor Weisberg earned a BA in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. also in statistics from Harvard University, under the direction of Frederick Mosteller.  The author of more than sixty articles, his research has primarily been in the areas of regression analysis, including graphical methods, regression diagnostics, and statistical computing.  He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and former Chair of its Statistical Computing Section.  He is the author or co-author of several books, including Applied Linear Regression (third edition 2005, Wiley), Residuals and Influence in Regression (with R. D. Cook, 1982, Chapman & Hall), Applied Regression Including Computing and Graphics (with R. D. Cook, 1999 Wiley).  He has several publications in areas that use statistics including archeology, plant sciences, wildlife management, fisheries, and public affairs.

Excellent, not only for regression models but for R in general

This book would be a great single volume introduction to R for social scientists and others who do a lot of work with regression models. As may be obvious from the title, it is also a great companion to anyone learning about regression models, e.g., in a statistics course. And if you are more experienced but not deeply knowledgeable about regression diagnostics, you will gain a very solid and valuable grounding in those.

The book has three particularly salient features: (1) the first 150 pages are a very nicely encapsulated introduction to R with hands-on examples that highlight many of the things that are covered in more detail later in the book. If you want to learn R and do regression models, this material is the perfect background. (2) the remainder of the book presents those models in more depth, building up piece by piece and with clear social science examples. Of special note is the attention to regression diagnostics -- which are often mentioned in other texts but not presented in such a practical way as here, with clearly worked examples and interpretations. (3) much of the content relies on the authors' R package "car", which provides a great set of tools for regression models, especially plotting, confidence interval estimation, and model diagnostics.

As an experienced R user, I enjoyed the book more than I expected: it taught me some very useful things about diagnostic tools, and demonstrated the "car" [companion to applied regression] package in a convincing way. I've known about car for years, but hadn't used it much; now I expect to use it regularly, especially for plotting.

Although the book calls itself a "companion" to other texts, it is actually self-contained if you already understand the basics of regression models in general. It avoids mathematical exegesis and focuses instead on exactly how to get things done in R ... and even more importantly, on how to understand what R is doing, how to interpret the results and work with the resulting objects, and how to avoid common problems. I'm going to start highly recommending this text to others who are new to R.

Gentle intro to applied linear regression and "car" package

This book is an excellent how-to guide to applied linear regression modelling. Even though it's called an "R companion" to Applied regression, it provides just enough of the two worlds - theory and basics of R programming - to carry out linear regression analysis on a day-to-day basis.

When choosing a book that would refresh my knowledge about linear regression, I was thinking about three:

- Linear models with R, by J. Faraway
- Using R for Introductory Statistics, by J. Verzani and
- An R companion to Applied Regression, Fox et al

I have fixed on the Mr. Fox's book mainly because he is the author of the "car" package and I wanted to learn more about it, mainly in the context of diagnosing linear regression models.

The book has completely met my expectations with solid applied coverage of the following areas:

- Visual data inspection
- Linear regression models
- Generalized linear regression models
- Diagnostics of LM and GLM

I highly recommend this book for two peculiar features. First, it feels like the author builds his knowledge of linear regression together with the reader, thus greatly facilitating learning process (this fact indeed is not surprising as Mr. Fox has been a university professor for years!). Second, the book heavily uses "car" package, of which Mr. Fox is the developer. "Car" package, on the one hand, helps increase the quality of regression models one produces and, on the other, decreases time needed for building a model.

Great Value

This is a fantastic book and one of those books that I feel was worth every penny. I bought it to accompany Fox's regression text, so I was disappointed that it didn't correspond perfectly, chapter for chapter. However, it's such a good book that I soon forgave the one drawback. I'll try to update this later on (I took the class last year, so a little hazy on exact points)...I just saw that there were no reviews and wanted to rectify that.
