Review
"This book is more than well-researched theory. This is a lifelong study in practical experience that proves once again that the value of building relationships within a community is vital to success." (Daren Berringer, Political Consultant 2008-10-02)

"An excellent book. This book embodies a powerful message that covers all the necessary steps to help transform individual mind-sets regarding poverty and learning disabilities.” (Belinda J. Raines, Principal 2009-02-17)

"The issues with special education are rarely addressed because many educators themselves do not feel qualified to tackle the concerns. This book allows the reader to see that there is a need to reform special education and to give a hard look at what we are doing and to begin making a change not only for special education, but for all students, so that as educators we lead them on the road to success." (Elizabeth Alvarez, Assistant Principal 2009-02-17)

"This book is the perfect guide for those administrators and teachers who are truly interested in equalizing educational opportunities at all levels." (Rebecca S. Compton, Professor of Elementary Education 2009-02-17)

About the Author
Lizette (Tish) Howard has 20 years of experience as an educator working with children and parents in low socioeconomic schools. She is an elementary principal in a Title I school in which 43 percent of its families are classified as living in poverty. In this position, Howard is responsible for the design and implementation of numerous programs and a school climate that raised the level of student academic success and closed the achievement gap between students of poverty and those residing in homes of economic stability. Howard works with parents, civic associations, clergy, and the business community to level the economic playing field for disadvantaged students and has implemented numerous initiatives to provide the necessary background knowledge many children from poverty lack when entering school.

Prior to her role as a school administrator, Howard served 10 years as a speech and language pathologist with a full caseload of language delayed children. She spent eight of those 10 years delivering services to emotionally disturbed adolescent males in an alternative educational setting. It was in that capacity that Howard introduced inclusion language therapy to her school district as opposed to the standard pull-out method. This form of therapeutic delivery is now widely used districtwide.

Howard has served as an education consultant for local preschool and summer camp experiences. She designed an educational summer experience for low socioeconomic children that focused on providing a foundation for the academic challenges they would face in the upcoming academic year. She also served on the Minority Student Achievement Board for her school system and has presented programs on intervention methods at the local school and university level.

Howard earned her bachelor's and master’s degrees in speech and language pathology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and her PhD in education leadership from George Mason University. While completing her postgraduate work, Howard was a contributing writer to the USA Today educational web site, and she continues to mentor prospective administrators through the university mentoring program. She has been nominated for Principal of the Year honors in her school district, recognized by the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development for development of positive school climate, and featured in numerous television and print articles.

Sandy Grogan Dresser is a human resources management consultant who consults with clients in the areas of compensation, performance management, management development, employee communications, and human resources policy and administration. She has more than 30 years experience in the field of human resources management, including six years in her private consulting practice and 15 years as an assistant vice president with Aon Consulting in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to joining Aon, Dresser served as a human resources director in both the public and private not-for-profit sectors. She has also served as an executive development consultant to a number of federal departments and agencies.

Dresser served 12 years as a public school teacher and administrator, during which time she was instrumental in the development and implementation of significant educational change in the implementation of middle schools and managed the human resources function of a metropolitan school district. In addition to standard personnel administration, she was responsible for coordinating a reorganization plan that included the closing of nine junior high schools, the opening of six new middle schools, and the reassignment of 300 employees. In this role, she devised and directed a staff reassignment procedure that effected minimum disruption and a high level of satisfaction among teachers, administrators, students, and parents.

A graduate of the University of North Carolina and Kansas University, Dresser holds bachelor's degrees in history and education and a master’s degree in education policy and administration. She is the author of numerous articles published in professional journals and frequently presents seminars for professional associations on topics in the human resources management field.

Dr. Dennis R. Dunklee is an Emeritus Professor in the Education Leadership Department in the Graduate School of Education at George Mason University. During his twenty-five years in public schools, he served as a teacher, elementary school principal, junior high and middle school principal, high school principal, and central office administrator. During his more than twenty years at George Mason University, he taught courses in education law and school leadership and served as an advisor and chair for master’s and doctoral candidates in school leadership.
Because of his expertise and practical experience, he continues to be frequently called on to consult in the areas of effective schools, school law, administrator evaluation, instructional supervision, school-community relations, problem solving, and conflict resolution. In addition, he continues to be actively involved as a consultant and expert witness in numerous school-related lawsuits nationwide. As a university scholar and researcher, he has published, and continues to publish, textbooks, monographs, and articles on issues in the fields of school law, business management, administrative practice, and leadership theory. He also continues to present papers at international, national, regional, state, and local conferences and is a widely sought-after clinician for inservice workshops. Dr. Dunklee was an invited participant and presenter at the 2005 Oxford (University) Round Table on Education Law: Individual Rights and Freedoms.

He received his Ph.D. in school administration and foundations from Kansas State University. His major area of research was in the field of education law, and his dissertation was on tort liability for negligence. He holds a master’s degree in elementary and secondary school administration from Washburn University.

This is Dr. Dunklee’s eighth book for Corwin Press. His other Corwin books are You Sound Taller on the Telephone: A Practitioner’s View of the Principalship (1999); If You Want to Lead Not Just Manage (2000); The Principal’s Quick Reference Guide to School Law (2002 and 2006, with Robert J. Shoop); Strategic Listening for School Leaders (2005, with Jeannine Tate); Anatomy of a Lawsuit: What Every Education Leader Should Know About Legal Actions (2006, with Robert J. 21st Century Criminology: A Reference Handbook (21st Century Reference)From Brand: SAGE Publications, Inc

Criminology has experienced tremendous growth over the last few decades, evident, in part, by the widespread popularity and increased enrollment in criminology and criminal justice departments at the undergraduate and graduate levels across the U.S. and internationally. Evolutionary paradigmatic shift has accompanied this surge in definitional, disciplinary and pragmatic terms. Though long identified as a leading sociological specialty area, criminology has emerged as a stand-alone discipline in its own right, one that continues to grow and is clearly here to stay. Criminology, today, remains inherently theoretical but is also far more applied in focus and thus more connected to the academic and practitioner concerns of criminal justice and related professional service fields. Contemporary criminology is also increasingly interdisciplinary and thus features a broad variety of ideological orientations to and perspectives on the causes, effects and responses to crime. 21st Century Criminology: A Reference Handbook provides straightforward and definitive overviews of 100 key topics comprising traditional criminology and its modern outgrowths. The individual chapters have been designed to serve as a "first-look" reference source for most criminological inquires. Both connected to the sociological origins of criminology (i.e., theory and research methods) and the justice systems' response to crime and related social problems, as well as coverage of major crime types, this two-volume set offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of criminology. From student term papers and masters theses to researchers commencing literature reviews, 21st Century Criminology is a ready source from which to quickly access authoritative knowledge on a range of key issues and topics central to contemporary criminology.

  • This two-volume set in the SAGE 21st Century Reference Series is intended to provide undergraduate majors with an authoritative reference source that will serve their research needs with more detailed information than encyclopedia entries but not so much jargon, detail, or density as a journal article or research handbook chapter.
  • 100 entries or "mini-chapters" highlight the most important topics, issues, questions, and debates any student obtaining a degree in this field ought to have mastered for effectiveness in the 21st century.
  • Curricular-driven, chapters provide students with initial footholds on topics of interest in researching term papers, in preparing for GREs, in consulting to determine directions to take in pursuing a senior thesis, graduate degree, career, etc.
  • Comprehensive in coverage, major sections include The Discipline of Criminology, Correlates of Crime, Theories of Crime & Justice, Measurement & Research, Types of Crime, and Crime & the Justice System.
  • The contributor group is comprised of well-known figures and emerging young scholars who provide authoritative overviews coupled with insightful discussion that will quickly familiarize researchers, students, and general readers alike with fundamental and detailed information for each topic.
  • Uniform chapter structure makes it easy for students to locate key information, with most chapters following a format of Introduction, Theory, Methods, Applications, Comparison, Future Directions, Summary, Bibliography & Suggestions for Further Reading, and Cross References.
  • Availability in print and electronic formats provides students with convenient, easy access wherever they may be.

Political and Civic Leadership: A Reference HandbookFrom SAGE Publications, Inc

I jumped at the chance to shepherd this collection. This was personal for me. In the past, when I had prepared to teach courses on political leadership, I had come up with a dearth of recent scholarly attention to the topic.
Perhaps my perspective on politics and leadership exacerbated the difficulty of my search. I had in mind a politics that touched all aspects of power and authority in our lives (not just government), encouraged the moral imagination, and affirmed human agency that could make the future better than the present. I searched with limited success for material that would explain how all of us shape and are shaped by politics. My perspective on leadership may have also hindered my search. I had in mind the simple notion of taking initiative on behalf of shared values. I found too little material about leadership that extended beyond the spectacle of authority and its assumption of hierarchy. I wanted to explain that each of us, regardless of our place in a hierarchy, has a calling to lead - to act on behalf of our moral imagination. Editing this volume permitted me the chance to develop the material I sought. I (as well as other teachers) no longer have a shortage of material relating politics and leadership with each other.

Review
"This is a book that should set off needed conversations in every school and classroom and school board meeting―and the dinner table. Sometimes I wanted to quarrel with the authors, and that's part of its genius. It always managed to provoke me to think and to engage with these dilemmas." (Deborah Meier, Senior Scholar and Adjunct Professor 2009-08-10)

"Schools are full of situations fraught with ethical implications. The Mackenzies show us how to recognize moral dilemmas, employ guidelines for addressing them, and, by walking us through abundant yeasty cases, teach us how to resolve them on our own. A gift to educators, the educational profession, and to all who would behave ethically and professionally within it." (Roland Barth, Educational Consultant 2009-08-10)

About the Author

Sarah V. Mackenzie is associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Maine. She has dealt with ethical issues in education for many years, first in her own hands-on experiences as a teacher and teacher leader and now in her role as a professor of educational leadership. Her most recent book, Uncovering Teacher Leadership: Essays and Voices From the Field (Corwin, 2007), is a compilation of writing focused on the inner lives of teacher leaders. She and Richard Ackerman published an article in the May 2006 issue of Educational Leadership titled “Uncovering Teacher Leadership.”

In all of her work―as a teacher and a teacher of teachers and leaders―she has recognized the critical relationship between what teachers believe about their work and how successfully they perform that work.

G. Calvin Mackenzie is The Goldfarb Family Distinguished Professor of American Government at Colby College. He has written extensively about ethics in government and has led ethics seminars for public officials across the country. He served as chair of the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices and was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. A political scientist by training, Mackenzie has been a government professor and scholar for more than 30 years. He has written or edited 15 books, including a leading introductory American government text and several award-winning empirical studies of the national government. His latest book, The Liberal Hour: Washington and the Politics of Change in the 1960s (with Robert Weisbrot) was a finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in History.

Curriculum Leadership: Development and ImplementationI find this book very easy to read and follow. Curriculum texts are usually packed full with information that goes on and on. The way the chapters are separated and the sub-headings make the information easily accessible. Also, the tips given within the chapters are right on the money and very helpful.

"Very nice illustrations, I like that it is a paperback book. Information is presented at a good level for college students."
—Lisa Kreber, Ph.D, Centre for Neuro Skills (CNS)

Author Bob Garrett engages students right from the start by providing student-friendly content and useful pedagogy. The integration of sensory material into behavioral contexts enhances student interest in topics they often regard as boring. These discussions build on material from earlier chapters to make a final and convincing case for the power of biological psychology to explain human behavior.

  • Expands on and combines the material on research techniques that was previously in the appendix with two topics from the first edition’s introductory chapter, Science, Research, and Theory and Research Ethics, to form the new chapter The Methods and Ethics of Research.
  • Contains more than 60 new illustrations, and 25 others were significantly revised to increase their informational and educational value.
  • Presents new tables
  • Incorporates thoroughly updated In the News and Application features with the most current information.
  • Integrates the latest findings in our rapidly increasing understanding of genetic influences on behavior
  • Strengthens the theme of the broader societal relevance of biopsychology

Popular features retained from the earlier edition:

  • Contains an eye-catching four-color interior design and extensive illustrative art program
  • Covers intelligence & consciousness in their own separate chapters, which is unique compared to the competition
  • Explores drugs and addiction in a separate chapter
  • Brings the focus on behavior to the forefront.
  • Contains opening vignettes of real life topics that help to make the chapter content come alive
  • Gives “Concept Checks” at the end of each main section within the chapter that are designed to assist the student in assessing their comprehension of that section.
  • Offers marginal questions throughout the text help keep students focused on the most important points in the chapters
  • Provides useful end-of- chapter pedagogy such as: “In Perspective” sections followed by a summary of the key points in the chapter; “For Further Thought” sections that require the student to think about and complete brief projects that will assist them in their understanding of the chapter content; and “Test Your Understanding” sections that appear at the end of every chapter help students assess their progress in learning the material presented. This feature contains short answer and multiple choice questions.

The robust ancillaries include:

  • An Instructor’s Resource CD-ROM that contains a computerized test bank, PowerPoint Slides, sample syllabi, and suggested in-class and homework assignments.

—Charles Long, University of Memphis

“I have been searching for a book that would thoroughly treat all of the concepts in brain and behavior while also being easy enough for the student to read without becoming overwhelmed. I think that the Garrett text might be an answer to my problem.”
—Natalie Ceballos, Texas State University

“The key issues in teaching biopsychology are getting students focused on the material and making it interesting enough for them to be willing to read the text. Garrett does a good job of assisting with this process of making material meaningful and practical to students.”
—Susan A. Todd, Bridgewater State College

“Garrett delivers…using every day applications to provide a context for making dry material much more interesting.”

Quite possible the worst textbook I've been assigned to read
By D. Ramirez
I will make this rather short and to the point. The organization of the materials reads more like a narrative than a textbook. The reader is forced to make sense of the writer's complete lack of structure and categorizing. There were numerous typos and as well as sentences in which all of the words contained no spacing between them. This was a rather difficult course, and the author/publisher failed to assist in any way.

Good psych book
By Sci Guy
Very detailed, and rarely boring. The only problem from my perspective is that it was too detailed sometimes, and the course I was taking was not as in-depth. Other than that, excellent.

Enjoyable and Engaging
By bookreader
I found this to be an interesting, engaging, well-arranged text book. It took a complex subject which easily could be confusing and laid it out in a nice, easy manner. The course felt easy for me because this book was so efficiently designed that learning was almost effortless. This is an achievement in any subject, but is particularly appreciated in a subject like psychology, where many texts have multiple theories for many phenomena confusingly splotched together on a page without strong overarching narrative. Exceeded my expectations, reading assignments in the book were never a drag, no gristle just lean knowledge injection straight into your brain.
