About the Author

Curt R. Bartol was a college professor for more than 30 years, teaching a wide variety of both undergraduate and graduate courses, including Biopsychology, Criminal Behavior, Juvenile Delinquency, Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Social Psychology, and Psychology and Law. He earned his PhD in personality/social psychology from Northern Illinois University in 1972. He was instrumental in creating and launching Castleton State College’s graduate program in forensic psychology and served as its director for 6 years. As a licensed clinical psychologist, he has been a consulting police psychologist to local, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies for over 25 years. In addition to editing Current Perspectives, he has written Introduction to Forensic Psychology (forthcoming in its 4th edition), Criminal Behavior: A Psychosocial Approach (now in its 10th ed.), Juvenile Delinquency and Antisocial Behavior: A Developmental Perspective (3rd ed.), Criminal and Behavioral Profiling, and Psychology and Law (4th ed.). 



Anne M. Bartol earned an MA and a PhD in criminal justice from State University of New York at Albany. She also holds an MA in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She taught criminal justice, sociology, and journalism courses over a 20-year college teaching career and has worked as a journalist and a social worker in child and adolescent protective services In addition to editing Current Perspectives, she has co-authored Introduction to Forensic Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, Psychology and Law, and Criminal Behavior. She has served as book review editor and managing editor of Criminal Justice and Behavior and has published articles on women and criminal justice, rural courts, and the history of forensic psychology.

About the Author
Scott C. Bauer (Ph.D. Cornell University) serves as Associate Professor and Program Coordinator in the Education Leadership Program at George Mason University. His research interests involve the application of organizational design and theory to the improvement of schools, and the efficacy of various strategies used to develop school leaders at all levels. His most recent publications deal with the design of distributed leadership processes in schools, the development of teacher leaders, and the redesign of school leadership preparation programs. He is involved in a federally-funded three-year study of the implementation and effectiveness of a cross-district coaching and mentoring support system for new principals. He serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of School Leadership and Journal of Research for Educational Leaders, and he is an officer for the Learning and Teaching in Educational Leadership special interest group in the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

S. David Brazer (Ph.D. Stanford) is an Associate Professor in the Education Leadership Program at George Mason University. Prior to coming to the College of Education and Human Development, David was a School Administrator for 12 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, serving his last six years as the Principal of Los Altos High School in Los Altos, California. David teaches primarily in the Education Leadership master's program for students pursuing a Virginia principal's license. He teaches in cohorts throughout Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia. Recent projects also include coordinating a partnership with Fairfax County Public Schools to provide accelerated licensure to a promising group of teacher leaders.

This is an excellent text that has a practical use for all educators involved in or considering school improvement planning. The authors "get it" and understand the realities of change the complex school environments. The text should be required reading for the nation's current policymakers, school reformers, and state ed chiefs who are driven by a narrowly defined corporate agenda that relies heavily on student test data. The authors go beyond this simplistic approach but in a way that is pragmatic and real. The text is not only research-based, but it provides a toolkit that includes not only strategies but templates. Well done, Bauer and Brazer!

The quintessential guide to learning how to lead school improvement

Of all the textbooks I've bought in my life, this one is probably the best. I bought it for a graduate school class in leading school improvement and this book is almost like a "how to" manual. It is concise and thorough. The book takes you step by step through every stage and gives lots of great pointers to keep you on track. In addition, it provides worksheets to keep you an active reader and to help you meld the ideas of the textbook into any school improvement plan you are working on. This book took a process that I had a great deal of anxiety about and made it into something that I now love to do.

About the Author
Susan E. Sather is a senior program advisor at the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory (NWREL) in Portland, OR. She leads the Laboratory’s professional learning teams (PLT) work, supervising and conducting PLT training in schools around the nation. She also contributes to research on issues such as high school academic rigor. Sather has 38 years of experience in education, 17 as a teacher working with a dropout prevention program and in special education. Prior to joining NWREL, she was western regional manager and a staff developer for a whole-school reform model, Ventures Education Systems. She has conducted research and evaluation through the School of Education and the School of Social Welfare at the University of California Berkeley, and with ARC associates in Oakland, California. At ARC, she was a member of the Leading for Diversity research team and co-author of Leading for Diversity: How School Leaders Promote Positive Interethnic Relations. She has a PhD in educational administration from the University of California Berkeley.

If I had to think of three adjectives to describe this book, they would be: PRACTICAL, PRACTICAL, PRACTICAL.

About the Author

Donovan R. Walling is a writer, editor, educator, and consultant. He serves as a senior consultant for the Center for Civic Education. He has taught art, English, and journalism in the United States and abroad and has worked as a curriculum administrator in public school districts in Wisconsin and Indiana. From 1993 until 2006 he was director of publications for the education association Phi Delta Kappa International.

Walling is the author or editor of more than a dozen professional books for educators and numerous articles and other publications. He is nationally recognized in the field of art education, where some of his publications include Under Construction: The Role of the Arts and Humanities in Postmodern Schooling (Phi Delta Kappa Educational Foundation, 1997); the Corwin Press books, Rethinking How Art Is Taught: A Critical Convergence (2000) and Visual Knowing: Connecting Art and Ideas Across the Curriculum (2005); the core chapter on visual and performing arts for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development’s Curriculum Handbook (2002), and the “Art in the Schools” entry for Macmillan’s Encyclopedia of Education (2003).

About the Author

Abby Barry Bergman has been involved in the field of education for over 40 years, in both private and public educational settings. Initially a kindergarten teacher, he has taught at the university level and has filled a variety of positions in school administration. Since 2002, he has served as the Regional Science Coordinator for Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES, a service organization for a consortium of school districts in New York State. Previously, he was principal of the Ralph S. Maugham School in Tenafly, New Jersey, for over 20 years―an elementary school in a nationally reputed “lighthouse” school district.

Having received his bachelor of arts degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York, he went on to engage in graduate study, earning the master of arts, master of education, and doctor of education degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University. In 1996, Bergman received the Administrative Excellence Award presented by the Bergen County Administrators Association.

Bergman has also served as an independent consultant in educational product development and evaluation. He has authored books in the field of science education and written several professional articles, pamphlets, and curriculum guides.



Having earned degrees at both Barnard College and Teachers College, Columbia University, Judy Powers began her career teaching at the elementary level for 10 years. As both a teacher and a policy board chair of a New York State Teacher Center, Judy conducted professional development courses in the areas of mathematics and classroom management. During her 16 years as an elementary school principal, Judy continued to conduct district- and building-based training and led schools based on a continuous improvement model. While a teacher, principal, and interim assistant superintendent, Judy consistently worked to build strong connections between school and community stakeholders. She led several regional workshops on teacher evaluation, supervision, and staff development. Judy now is a consultant to educational organizations. She has coordinated a mentorship program and now coordinates regional professional development, oversees curriculum development, coaches elementary administrators, and conducts staff development in the areas of leadership and curriculum development in both public and private schools.

Michael L. Pullen currently works as an elementary school principal in upstate New York―a capacity he has served in for the past six years. Prior to becoming an elementary principal, his teaching career saw him work in urban, suburban, and rural districts in upstate New York. As a principal, Michael has led several district curriculum initiatives and had made regional presentations about science curriculum development. Under his leadership, his buildings have been recognized by the state education department as either high-performing or gap-closing schools four times. Michael received his B.A. from St. John Fisher College, his M.S. from Nazareth College, and his Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) from the State University of New York at Oswego.

Every elementary school leader's helpful companion

I have just re-read Bergman, Powers and Pullen's brilliant leadership resource: The Survival Kit for the Elementary School Principal. Wow, it used to be said that being a school leader was a lonely task, but this book is the equivalent of having a personal coach standing beside you as you walk through your school. This book is more than a "survival kit" it is also a brilliant "reviver kit". For busy, experienced school leaders, who are often under pressure, this book provides the guide-on-the-side, when you reflect about what you are doing.

This substantial book provides a mass of useful ideas that have been worked so they are applicable in schools with some minor tweaking. For schools outside the U.S. the material is still usable with a few small changes. For example, the Martin Luther King Jr. assembly (Fig. 20.1) will fit many significant days in countries around the world. It was interesting to see that American schools still sing the protest songs of the 70s: "If I had a hammer", "We shall overcome", and "This is your land". Just being able to look inside another school's operations is worth its weight in gold for any school leader.

As mentioned on the cover of the book, all of the forms, letters and checklists are available on line. You need to have the book with you because access to the site requires the answer to a question from the book (it's easy!).

For me, this file of the resources is the mother-lode for school leaders. Other related resources from Sage are also linked into the site and I was able to download Daniel Dukes's valuable paper (2010) on the turnabout principal.

This book is a great asset for all existing, and aspiring, school leaders.

About the Author
Arlene Fink (Ph.D.) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles and President of the Langley Research Institute. Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality. Dr. Fink has conducted scores of evaluation studies in public health, medicine and education. She is on the faculty of UCLA’s Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and is a scientific and evaluation advisor to UCLA’s Gambling Studies and IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) programs. She consults nationally and internationally for agencies such as L’institut de Promotion del la Prévention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) Paris, France and Peninsula Health in Victoria, Australia. Professor Fink has taught and lectured extensively all over the world and is the author of over 130 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.

About the Author
Dr. Gene L. Scaramella taught in and coordinated criminal justice programs in both career colleges and 2/4 year public colleges and universities in the Chicago area. His areas of academic foci included organized and white collar crime, research methodologies, and policing. Dr. Scaramella was also a former member of the Chicago Police Department where his last assignment was in the organized crime unit. He passed away in August 2012.

Steven Cox earned his B.S. in psychology, M.A. in sociology, and Ph.D. in sociology at the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. Dr. Cox was a member of the Law Enforcement and Justice Administration faculty at Western Illinois University from 1975 to 2007. For the past 45 years he has served as trainer and consultant to numerous criminal justice agencies in the United States and abroad and has worked with several universities in the area of course development. In addition, Dr. Cox has authored and co-authored numerous successful textbooks and articles.



Dr. William P. McCamey was a Professor in the School of Law Enforcement and Justice Administration at Western Illinois University from 1982 to 2012. Dr. McCamey earned a B.S. and M.A. in Law Enforcement Administration, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. Dr. McCamey has served as a criminal investigator, police trainer and has co-authored four textbooks and numerous journal articles.

About the Author
Susan Belgrad is currently a professor of education with California State University, Northridge. She has taught at the elementary level and in early childhood special education, and has enjoyed a long career in higher education working with teachers from pre-kindergarten through high school. For the past 20 years, Belgrad has led state and national efforts that support teachers' professional education and public awareness of teacher excellence.

Kay Burke has served as an award-winning classroom teacher and a school administrator, university instructor, and international professional developer. She works with Kay Burke & Associates, LLC, to provide workshops for teachers and administrators in standards-based learning, performance assessment, classroom management, mentoring, and portfolio development. For the past 18 years, Burke has presented at state and national conferences such as ASCD, NSDC, NAESP, NASSP, NMSA, and IRA as well as international conferences in Canada and Australia. She is the author of 10 professional development books and coauthor of a college textbook on assessment. Corwin Press published Burke's best-selling From Standards to Rubrics in Six Steps: Tools for Assessing Student Learning, K–8 (2006), a 2007 finalist for the Distinguished Achievement Award for Excellence in Educational Publishing presented by the Association of Educational Publishers. Other books published by Corwin Press include How to Assess Authentic Learning, Fourth Edition (2005) and What to Do With the Kid Who: Developing Cooperation, Self-Discipline and Responsibility in the Classroom (Third Edition).

Why didn't I by this years ago? Why isn't it used more?!

In this day and age of accountability and NCLB, the human element of teaching unfortunately goes to the wayside. Teachers might hear from their students, "school isnt fun anymore." This book really guides teachers into bringing back the joy of school and celebrate student work. There are plenty of examples, forms, ideas, etc. to get the teacher going. I LOVE THE CHECKLIST BASED ON STANDARDS!!! Although I have yet to implement, I shared the ideas with my colleagues, who then implemented the ideas and say their kids love having a portfolio and "when can we make the next one?" This is definately a purchase you sould make along with Kay Burke's other book, "From Standards to Rubrics in Six Steps: Tools for Assessing Student Learning, K-8."
