About the Author
Amy Morse is a national leader in designing and providing professional development for math coaches and district leaders responsible for coaching programs. In 1997, Amy joined Education Development Center where, as a project director, she works on teacher and coach development programs. In this capacity she worked for many years with the Boston Public Schools (BPS) Elementary Math Department to design and facilitate the professional development for the district’s elementary math coaches. At present, she directs Professional Development for Math Coaching institutes for EDC’s Math Leadership program http://www.edc.org/MLP. Amy travels extensively, working as a consultant to school districts in various stages of implementing a math coaching strategy and is the director of the Center for the Professional Development of Coaching and Math Leadership at EDC.

Good for references, but that's about it

Like a previous reviewer, I find this textbook hard to read and understand. There's no fluidity in the text---just a compilation of theories that are not expanded upon fully. I.certainly hope the next edition is better than this one.

Great Historical, Contextual, and Theoretical Information on Adult Education

The title says it all. This is "The Handbook" if you work in or are studying Adult and Continuing Education. It's a great compendium and includes many notable names among the chapter authors. If you are looking for a fairly balanced overview of current issues in the diverse field of Adult Education, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Every edition is strikingly different though (as academic handbooks should be!) so make sure to buy often and get the correct ISBN/Edition if you are purchasing as a required text for a class.

It is a text book, but you could do worse

I use this book on occasion. It is not my "go to" text for citing adult education. There are some areas where I think it could use some more detailed explanation to trends and styles, but it does provide the names of of some of the proponents. It could have provided more.

I was thinking about a 3 star rating, however the subjects covered concerning continuing education are better than "ok"

As a result this is a tepid four star rating.

About the Author
Ronald Hamowy is a Fellow in Social Thought at the Cato Institute. He is professor of history emeritus at the University of Alberta and previously was assistant director of the History of Western Civilization Program at Stanford University. He received his Ph.D. in social thought under F. A. Hayek at the University of Chicago. He is the author of books on the Scottish Enlightenment and on health care and the editor of a book on drug prohibition and the Liberty Press edition of Cato’s Letters. He is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society, an international society of scholars founded in 1947 by Hayek, Friedman, and other luminaries of the libertarian movement.

Beginning with an impressive introductory essay providing an extensive historical and thematic overview of the development of libertarian thought that includes its significant contributors, events, and publications, "Encyclopedia Of Libertarianism" is enhanced with a Reader's Guide groups content of value for students and researchers by enabling the study of libertarianism topically, biographically, and by public policy issue area. An Encyclopedia of American-styled Libertarianism

Ronald Hamowy's "The Encyclopedia of Libertarianism" is really an encyclopedia of American-styled libertarianism, or what Europeans refer to as 'right-libertarianism'. In over 300 A-to-Z entries, Hamowy's encyclopedia provides a sound overview of American-styled libertarian concepts, historical events, institutions, movements, and personalities that helped shape libertarianism and the way it is thought of in America. A wide range of entries cover American Libertarianism's historical origins as well as interrelationships with other political philosophies.

A general introduction by tax consumer and government employee Stephen Davies, the United Kingdom's expert on American Libertarianism, provides an informative background and general chronology. Entries include: Lord Acton, John Adams, Anarcho-capitalism, Austrian School of Economics, Conservatism, Democracy, Milton Friedman, Government, Floyd Arthur "Baldy" Harper, Friedrich A. Hayek, Left Libertarianism, William Leggett, Magna Carta, Karl Marx, Ludwig von Mises, Robert Nozick, Private Property, Leonard E. Read, Ayn Rand, Right of Revolution, Murray Rothbard,Socialism, state, and U.S. Constitution.

Not included are Paul Avrich, Walter Bagehot, Michael Bakunin, Isaac Deutscher, Maurice Brinton, and many other European libertarians. An explanation for their omission can be found within the entry for Left Libertarianism: "Left libertarianism is a fairly recently coined term for a fairly old idea. . . However, they differ from what we generally understand by the term 'libertarian' . . . The question arises as to whether left libertarianism is both coherent and plausible."

Actually, Europeans were using the term 'libertarianism' long before Leonard Read began using it on the American side of The Pond. 'We' Americans are the ones who differ from 'them' and what European libertarians have long held to be libertarianism, which is not what we Americans think it is. No doubt American Yanks were shocked to read what they considered to be 'communism' referred to as 'libertarian' in British publications during World War I and again during World War II. More historical investigation is needed on the origins of the American use of the term 'libertarian' during the twentieth century.

That said, this is an easy-to-read and sound reference for anyone, including scholars, to understand the birth and growth of the free market movement in America that came to call itself 'libertarianism'. I highly recommend this competent summary of the current state of American knowledge in Right Libertarianism.

About the Author

Eric Jensen is a former teacher and current member of the Society for Neuroscience and New York Academy of Sciences. He has taught at all levels, from elementary through university level and is currently completing his PhD in human development. In 1981, Jensen cofounded SuperCamp, the nation’s first and largest brain-compatible learning program, now with over 50,000 graduates. He has since written Teaching with the Brain in Mind, Brain-Based Learning, Deeper Learning, Arts with the Brain in Mind, Enriching the Brain, and 21 other books on learning and the brain. A leader in the brain-based movement, Jensen has made over 45 visits to neuroscience labs and interacts with countless neuroscientists. He was the founder of the Learning Brain EXPO and has trained educators and trainers for 25 years worldwide in this field. He is deeply committed to making a positive, significant, lasting difference in the way we learn.

Get off the dead horse of "old school" education

To those seeking an outline of what education needs to practice so "no child is left behind" this book is a starting point about how people learn. The flow of the book is easy to follow and considers the research findings of how the brain learns in stages of life. Unlike those who consider brain research a "fad", I know from application of the knowledge in this book, the influential changes do produce positive results for students. In the world of "accountability" the tools of Brain Based teaching will allow students and teachers a solution in "leveling the field" for the students from less fortunate environments, which politicians are clueless about in regards the obstacles of "survivalists of poverty". I highly reccommend this book to those wishing to "get off the dead horse" and provide a productive environment for education in the 21st century.

About the Author
Joan Franklin Smutny is founder and director of the Center for Gifted, a Northern Illinois University Partner. She directs programs for thousands of bright, talented, and gifted children in the Chicago area annually. She also teaches creative writing in many of these programs as well as courses on gifted education for graduate students at the university level. She is editor of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children Journal, contributing editor of Understanding Our Gifted, and a regular contributor to the Gifted Education Communicator, Parenting for High Potential, and the Gifted Education Press Quarterly. Smutny has authored, co-authored, and edited many articles and books on gifted education for teachers, parents, and administrators, including Challenging High Potential Spanish Speaking Students (2012), Teaching Advanced Learners in the General Education Classroom (2011), Manifesto of the Gifted Girl (2010), Differentiating for the Young Child, Second Edition (2010), Igniting Creativity in Gifted Learners, K–6 (2009), Acceleration for Gifted Learners, K–5 (2007), Reclaiming the Lives of Gifted Girls and Women (2007), Designing and Developing Programs for Gifted Students (2003), Underserved Gifted Populations (2003), Gifted Education: Promising Practices (2003), Stand Up for Your Gifted Child (2001), The Young Gifted Child: Potential and Promise, an Anthology (1998), and Teaching Young Gifted Children in the Regular Classroom (1997). In 1996, she won the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) Distinguished Service Award for outstanding contribution to the field of gifted education.

S.E. von Fremd is an independent scholar, writer, and editor with a background in education, cultural studies, and dance. She performed with the Never Stop Moving Dance Company in Chicago under the direction of Reynaldo Martinez and taught creative dance and theater to children in the city and surrounding areas. Her interest in creativity and culture eventually led her to do a doctorate in performance studies at Northwestern University. This included a year’s research in Uganda, where she focused on the role of popular theater and dance in reviving cultural identity and educating children and young people throughout the country. She has written several book reviews on African musical traditions, a monograph on the cultural legacy of Kenyan novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Nigerian playwright Wole Soyinka, another monograph on refugees in Africa, and an article on the performing arts as a popular forum for education in Uganda. She has also given presentations on Uganda’s creative artists under the reign of Idi Amin and on dance movements throughout the continent of Africa.

Ron Nash is the author of the Corwin bestseller The Active Classroom (2008), along with The Active Teacher (2009), and The Active Mentor (2010). Nash’s professional career in education has included teaching social studies at the middle and high school levels. He also served as an instructional coordinator and organizational development specialist for the Virginia Beach City Public Schools for 13 years. In that capacity, Nash conducted workshops and seminars for thousands of teachers, administrators, substitute teachers, and teacher assistants. In 2007, he founded Ron Nash and Associates, Inc., a company dedicated to helping teachers shift students from passive observers to active participants.

This book changed how I teach!

The "active" strategies in this book completely changed my teaching style. I have more fun teaching, and my kids enjoy my class more, too! I find that I am more effective when I use the strategies in this book and that the kids are more successful. My test scores reflect that the techniques truly work, but more importantly, an "active" classroom motivates my students to WANT to learn. That's half the battle in teaching!

Practical strategies for becoming learner-centred teachers

This is a surprisingly useful book. I wish all teachers and teachers-to-be can benefit from it. For busy teachers who don't have the luxury to read up on so many diverse sources, you get a good distillation of their applications.

"Don't smile until Christmas!" is the conventional wisdom. Martha's first suggestion is to SMILE. Chapter 1, "From Fear to Flow" highlights the importance of safe environment and "relaxed alertness" for learning and quotes the eight components of FLOW.

Many "good ideas" marked by the icon of a light bulb, sensible quotes and summaries, questions that challenge our assumptions are given throughout the book.

Each chapter starts with a cartoon and a brief summary of "Begin with the Brain" principle. E.g. Ch. 3 on "Patterns and Procedures: Organizing Systems for Orderliness" begins with the following statements. "The brain innately seeks to detect familiar and useful patterns in its environment. These patterns give a context to what otherwise might be interpreted as meaningless. These meaningful patterns, when practiced, become wired in the brain as programs." Then the author goes on to make applications, refining distinctions such as setting standards rather than imposing rules, the need for procedures and routines rather than discipline... and provides tools for teachers.

Martha does not cover the anatomy and fucntions of the brain. But we get both good brain-compatible, democratic, student-centred principles and support for developing relevant skills without getting into polemics. I trust teachers will appreciate the challenge to one's thinking and practice and all the help given here. When well assimilated, we are all taught not only good principles and practices for teaching and learning, but also for living.

I used the first edition of your book with student teachers who are in their final year of teacher education. While it has been awesome, this second edition offers so much more! It is more specific and connects the research with practical application. The "why" and the "how" all in one.

This book is full of information. The author, Martha Kaufeldt, knows children, teachers and classrooms so her book is user friendly. This is the sort of book an educator will read and keep as a resource. Wonderful for veteran teachers and for new teachers alike!

About the Author

Gayle H. Gregory is first and foremost a teacher, having experienced teaching and learning in elementary, middle, and secondary schools, community colleges, and universities. She has had extensive district-wide experience as a curriculum consultant and staff development coordinator. Gayle was principal/course director at York University for the Faculty of Education, teaching in the teacher education program.
Her areas of expertise include brain-compatible learning, differentiated instructional and assessment strategies, block scheduling, emotional intelligence, student motivation, RTI Tier One, collaborative learning, common core, renewal of secondary schools, enhancing teacher quality, coaching and mentoring, managing change, and building professional learning communities. Her school was named a 2000 winner of the John R. Irwin Award for Academic Excellence and Improvement. In addition, for the past decade she has been involved in staff development through several universities and the Tointon Institute for Educational Change. Kuzmich is an adjunct professor at both Colorado State University and University of Northern Colorado. She is a senior consultant for the International Center for Leadership in Education, has provided training and consulting to school districts around the country, and has presented at numerous national conferences.

About the Author
Neil J. Salkind is Professor Emeritus at the University of Kansas, where he taught in the Department of Educational Psychology for more than 35 years. His interest is in writing about statistics and research methods in an informative, nonintimidating and noncondescending way. He is also the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics, Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (the Excel Edition), Excel Statistics - a Quick Guide, and the recently edited Encyclopedia of Research Design.

Very helpful BUT....

This book was great at explaining the principles behind the math. However-- THERE WERE HUGE MISTAKES!!! The formula for the correlation coefficient for example, had a misplaced parenthetical that changed the formula. As a rookie in this area I was in tears trying to figure out my homework. This was not the only error, but it certainly was the worst!!!
Otherwise, the examples make it easy to understand the concepts of statistics, and certainly made it so I was able to ace the course. I just wish it hadn't had so many errors.

Best stats book I've read or own

I have eight stats books in my bookshelf, from Dummy's Guides to college textbooks. Salkind's text presented the material, seemingly directed toward graduate students, in the most clear and easy to understand manner of all I've read. It was actually enjoyable to read. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one.

My professor taught the class better than the book did. But overall this book is okay. It was required for one of my classes for my master degree. It is full of great information to help you become more of a competent counselor.
