About the Author
Jessica K. Parker is currently an assistant professor at Sonoma State University, and she studies how high schools integrate multimedia literacy into academic literacy learning. She has taught middle school, high school and college students for over a decade and has also created and taught professional development courses for teachers. She has published teacher-researcher articles in English Journal, and has presented at national conventions such as AERA, National Media Education Conference, NCTE Assembly for Research, and many others. Jessica completed her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley; she has a B.A. in Media Studies and a M.A. and a Ph.D. in Education.

This book rocks - great for teachers and teacher-education

This book is a how-to for integrating the latest technology into classrooms. It's written by a researcher and high school teachers and has a companion Web site. I got it because I know the author, but I hadn't had a chance to look at it until now. When I did look at it, I immediately regretted not checking it out months ago so I could require my students to buy it (I'm in teacher-ed). It's thorough and helpful for people who aren't technical, but doesn't treat its readers like morons either.

From using social networking platforms, Wikipedia, and digital music to showing how young people use digital media, this is packed with fine insights, examples, and field-tested strategies, and deserves a place in any teaching collection!

Dr. J.K. Parker has developed one of the best books out their that clearly unpacks the digital world from 1990's to present (and should be relevant far beyond). The most amazing part of this book is that she collaborates with authors and experts from each field that is showcased in her chapters. This means, it is not just one author's point-of-view (even the philosophy of this book is exercised in how it is written). If you are and educator like me, you see that the world and classroom is changing so fast; kids and teachers that don't learn this digital landscape simultaneously will lose touch and respect with each other. If educators care enough and see the value in their subversive digital life, they can help navigate this with kids and open their eyes to the unlimited ways they can be civil rights pioneers and open everyone's eyes to the news and media that is kept a secret. In other words, kids can help create communities, media, and learning environments that matter to them and the rest of the world.
