About the Author
David A. Craig is an associate professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma. He teaches journalism ethics, editing and graduate research courses. His research interests include excellence in journalistic practice, the ethics of journalistic language, coverage of ethics in professions and values for ethical decision-making. Craig worked for nine years as a news copy editor. He earned an M.A. in communication from Wheaton College and a Ph.D. in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He taught editing courses at Northwestern University and Missouri. He has been a professor at Oklahoma since 1996.

Bob Algozzine is a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina and project codirector of the U.S. Department of Education-supported Behavior and Reading Improvement Center. With 25 years of research experience and extensive firsthand knowledge of teaching students classified as seriously emotionally disturbed, Algozzine is a uniquely qualified staff developer, conference speaker, and teacher of behavior management and effective teaching courses. He is active in special education practice as a partner and collaborator with professionals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools in North Carolina and as an editor of several journals focused on special education. About the Author

Yohuru Rashied Williams is an associate professor of history at Fairfield University and the vice president for history education of the American Institute for History Education. He is the author of Black Politics/White Power; editor of A Constant Struggle: African-American History from 1865 to the Present; and coeditor of In Search of the Black Panther and Liberated Territory: Toward A Local History of the Black Panther Party.

Williams began his educational career as a high school history teacher in Washington, DC, where he first began to develop many of the ideas included in Teaching U.S. History Beyond the Textbook. After earning a PhD in history from Howard University, Williams served as director of social studies education at Delaware State University, training preservice history teachers, and in 2002 was tapped as a consultant for the National Council for History Education. A sought-after, dynamic speaker, Williams has been conducting seminars and colloquia for history teachers around the nation since 2005.

Some practical strategies, but no big picture

I was really looking forward to this. While there's some good stuff in here, this is more a collection of conceptual frames than a comprehensive guide to historical investigation. The strategies would be more effective with younger students or those just getting acquainted with the idea that history is something alive rather than something to be discovered and interpreted.

The good include his "Haunted History" mysteries and ESP (+C) as a simple alternative acronym to PERSIA/SPICE/SPERM or other, longer mnemonics for getting at the different lenses of history. His idea of history as a 4-way traffic intersection has also been a useful analogy. However, it's lacking the theoretical background or the how-to of other books in this genre.

If you work with middle schoolers or are looking for smaller ways to help students become more active in constructing the past, this is a good option. If you're looking for a more how-to book, check out Bruce Lesh. If you're looking for a more comprehensive guide, check out work by Sam Wineburg or Jeff (?) Nokes.

Always On My Desk

I have this book and I use it religiously. I write scholarly units for teacher programs for two Ivy League Universities and I depend on Dr. William's strategies to help me to deliver the information to my students. My students come into class ASKING if they can do CSI or another one which he developed called "What's On Your Plate?" . I have included Dr. Williams' book in every scholarly, researched based unit I have written ( I have written five to date ). If you want your kids to dig deeper, get excited, and hit your objectives, then this is the book for you.

About the Author
A parent of two middle-school-aged children, Will Richardson has been writing about the intersection of social online learning networks and education for the past 10 years at Weblogg-ed.com and in numerous journals and magazines such as Ed Leadership, Education Week, and English Journal. Just do it

Not wanting to label myself as a complete luddite, but not really knowing where to start either, I was really grateful that this book came along. Aimed at teachers of primary and secondary students (I am a tertiary level teacher), it has many examples of Web tools that could be easily implemented in the classroom. More than that, though, it lists technologically efficient ways of organising information for students. Since reading this book, I have created a blog for myself, organised an aggregator and thought seriously about podcasting and RSS feeds. Now I'm on a crusade to utilise these Web tools into learning and teaching activities to make the most of current forms of communication and improve engagement of students. Theses tools aren't just another way of presenting information; they can be incorporated into a curriculum to enhance learning. To do that, though, teachers need to be comfortable and convinced about their use. I suggest you use this book as a learning tool for yourselves first.

Very cool stuff! This book inspires me to want to use more technology in the classroom. Having been out of the classroom for a few years, I have not had the opportunity to practice what I preach. Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms has got me excited about teaching again.

Overall, I feel that this book was everything it was supposed to be. Although not geared towards the novice, it was easy to read and therefore could be beneficial to a wide range of people, especially educators. The author covered a good range of tools and practices well with good examples. Certainly a book to have in your library.

Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, and Other Powerful Web Tools for Classrooms is a good book on how to use web 2.0 tools in a educational setting. Richardson gives a good introduction to the book by talking about how technology has changed in the recent years and how it is continuing to grow. The idea that the gap in the understanding and knowledge of technology between teachers and students is an obstacle still to be overcome is a good point. Richardson describes the more experienced teachers as "digital immigrants" and the current students as "Digital natives" to describe the gap. This description gives the reader a good idea of how technology has exponentially grown in recent times.
Richardson does a great job in his book to describe and how the web 2.0 tools can be implemented in the current classroom. Richardson divides each chapter by a different web 2.0 tool. He takes the time to give a good description of the tool and how it can be utilized in the classroom. After he has given the reader the information needed about the web 2.0 tool and how to use it in the classroom, he then gives good resources to find these tools. Richardson gives his opinion on these different sites and positives and negatives of each site. This is one of the most useful parts of the book, once I read about the tool I immediately had examples to go look at as I was reading. Many of the sites that Richardson suggests are what he says they are and are very helpful in learning the new tool.
I recommend this book for teachers and higher education students who want to get a good introduction of these tools. Richardsons's book is a easy to read book with very helpful and useful sources. The sources compliment the book nicely and are very useful in beginning to use the web 2.0 tools described in the book.

As an accomplished author and researcher, she has presented successful staff development to local, national, and international audiences. Toby is affiliated with Drew and Monmouth University and is an adjunct professor and graduate instructor at the Regional Training Center, which is affiliated with Gratz College and The College of New Jersey. In addition to her roles as an inclusion coach, student and family advocate, professional developer, mentor and resource teacher, Toby designed graduate courses titled From Challenge to Success; LD, ADHD, and the Spectrum and Skills and Strategies for Inclusion and disABILITY Awareness.  She has trained instructors in three states to teach her courses. In addition, she has designed online courses for NaMaYa titled Collaborative Practices for Inclusive Classrooms and Interventions for Students with Dyslexia and Other Reading Differences. She has been recognized by both the Council for Exceptional Children and the New Jersey Department of Education as an exemplary educator, receiving two Teacher of the Year awards. She earned an undergraduate degree in special education from Brooklyn College, a master of science in special education from the College of Staten Island, a supervisory degree from Georgian Court University, and an honorary doctorate from Gratz College. Toby has authored several books and resources about inclusion practices and the CCSS, which are currently used for instruction on many college and university campuses and schools throughout the world.

Ms. Karten is married, has a son, and a few dogs. She enjoys teaching, reading, writing, artwork, and most of all, learning.  Toby believes that inclusion does not begin and end in the classroom, but is a philosophy that continues throughout life. Hence, inclusion is not only research-based, but life-based as well!

About the Author

Michael Quinn Patton is an independent consultant with more than 40 years’ experience conducting applied research and program evaluations. He lives in Minnesota, where, according to the state’s poet laureate, Garrison Keillor, “all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.” It was this interesting lack of statistical variation in Minnesota that led him to qualitative inquiry despite the strong quantitative orientation of his doctoral studies in sociology at the University of Wisconsin. He was on the faculty of the University of Minnesota for 18 years, including 5 years as director of the Minnesota Center for Social Research, where he was awarded the Morse-Amoco Award for innovative teaching. Readers of this book will not be surprised to learn that he has also won the University of Minnesota storytelling competition.

He has authored six other SAGE books: Utilization-Focused Evaluation, Creative Evaluation, Practical Evaluation, How to Use Qualitative Methods for Evaluation, Essentials of Utilization-Focused Evaluation, and Family Sexual Abuse: Frontline Research and Evaluation. He has edited or contributed articles to numerous books and journals, including several volumes of New Directions in Program Evaluation, on subjects as diverse as culture and evaluation, how and why language matters, HIV/AIDS research and evaluation systems, extension methods, feminist evaluation, teaching using the case method, evaluating strategy, utilization of evaluation, and valuing. He is the author of Developmental Evaluation: Applying Complexity Concepts to Enhance Innovation and Use and coauthor of Getting to Maybe: How the World Is Changed, a book that applies complexity science to social innovation. His creative nonfiction book, Grand Canyon Celebration: A Father–Son Journey of Discovery, was a finalist for Minnesota Book of the Year.

He is a former president of the American Evaluation Association and recipient of both the Alva and Gunnar Myrdal Award for Outstanding Contributions to Useful and Practical Evaluation and the Paul F. Lazarsfeld Award for Lifelong Contributions to Evaluation Theory from the American Evaluation Association. The Society for Applied Sociology presented him the Lester F. Ward Award for Outstanding Contributions to Applied Sociology.

He is on the faculty of The Evaluators’ Institute and teaches workshops for the American Evaluation Association’s professional development courses and Claremont University’s Summer Institute. He is a founding trainer for the International Program for Development Evaluation Training, sponsored by The World Bank and other international development agencies each summer in Ottawa, Ontario.

He has conducted applied research and evaluation on a broad range of issues, including antipoverty initiatives, leadership development, education at all levels, human services, the environment, public health, medical education, employment training, agricultural extension, arts, criminal justice, mental health, transportation, diversity initiatives, international development, community development, systems change, policy effectiveness, managing for results, performance indicators, and effective governance. He has worked with organizations and programs at the international, national, state, provincial, and local levels and with philanthropic, not-for-profit, private sector, international agency, and government programs. He has worked with people from many different cultures and perspectives.

He has three children―a musician, an engineer, and a nonprofit organization development and evaluation specialist―and one granddaughter. When not evaluating, he enjoys exploring the woods and rivers of Minnesota with his partner, Jean―kayaking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing―and occasionally hiking in the Grand Canyon. Great product, shady shipping.

The book is a text book so I won't review the content. It serves its purpose. The seller did fine as well. The loss of a star has to do with the shipping. The seller used KDL. The driver knocked at a side door, then told my wife that the instructions were to leave the package, but he wanted to know who she was. She told him she was my wife and he continued to grill her about her identity. She get creeped out by him, and told him to keep the package. As she closed the door, he relented and pushed the package at her. She closed the door and made sure to make him aware of our large, very protective dogs. I have reported this driver to KDL.

About the Author
Dan W. Butin is the founding dean of the school of education at Merrimack College. He is the editor and author of over fifty books, articles, and book chapters, including the books Teaching Social Foundations of Education and Service-Learning and Social Justice Education. Dr. Butin’s research focuses on issues of educator preparation and policy and community engagement. Dr. Butin has been the assistant dean of the school of education at Cambridge College and a faculty member at Gettysburg College. A MUST for Ed.D. candidates!! Should be a course required reading

This is the first product on Amazon - after hundreds of great purchases - that I feel compelled to write.

I am an Ed.D. student that has been struggling to write my dissertation due to several of the 'life' pitfalls that the introduction details. I love my chair but I get such little face time and our program prepared us in many respects for this next phase but fell short in really going deep into the process of writing one's dissertation. Educational research has many unique challenges as well that I'm not sure I completely felt I understood well enough to anticipate mistakes in methods or conceptualizing a research design. I found this guide by chance, downloaded it onto kindle, read through it in two evenings and I have a renewed sense of hope and energy. I can clearly see now structurally what had been misaligned or missing from my initial proposal. I recommend this guide to ALL Ed.D. students - it is a small price to pay to have something like a dissertation 'whisperer' in your ear!

Thank you Dr. Butin! I was really feeling down on myself for not being able in the mist of juggling the demands of work, family, and research to figure out why I was getting stuck in the writing process. This guide is practical, thorough, and extremely accessible!

About the Author
Robert J. Sternberg is Professor of Human Development in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. He was most recently President and Professor of Psychology and Education at the University of Wyoming. Before that, he was Provost and Senior Vice President at Oklahoma State University as well as Regents Professor of Psychology and Education and George Kaiser Family Foundation Professor of Ethical Leadership. He was previously Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, where he was also professor of psychology and education. Prior to that, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education and Professor of Management at Yale University. Sternberg received his Ph.D. from Stanford and is the recipient of 13 honorary doctorates. In addition, he has won more than two dozen awards for his work. He is a former president of the American Psychological Association and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He is the author of roughly 1,500 books, articles, and book chapters.

Elena Grigorenko is associate professor of child studies and psychology at Yale University and associate professor of psychology at Moscow State University. Grigorenko has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and books. She has received many professional awards, and her research has been funded by various federal and private organizations. Grigorenko has worked with children from around the world, including those living in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
