Review
"No longer is history something to be ingested and regurgitated on a test, but rather something that absorbs the intellectual imagination of the learner. That is a rare quality in good teaching. The author has done a marvelous job of bridging what are otherwise conflicting paradigms."
(Lynn E. Nielsen, Professor of Education 2008-04-10)

"This book offers experienced social studies teachers endless ideas and inspiration to revitalize their classrooms so that students look forward to learning social studies, especially learning experiences placed in their own communities." (Nancy P. Gallavan, Professor 2008-04-10)

"An excellent guide for making history a compelling subject to students through the use of sleuthing and crime analysis metaphors and techniques. Any teacher using the models outlined in the book will find his or her classes more exciting for all involved.” (Eugene F. Provenzo, Jr., Professor 2008-04-10)

"Williams presents engaging and unique strategies from his broad range of experience. The connections between historical events and the polemics and mysteries of crime scenes make history learning a thrill." (Brett Piersma, Social Studies Teacher 2008-04-10)

"This is not your typical social studies methods book by any means. Williams's highly readable prose shows a deep respect for the marriage of American history content and teaching." (Elaine Wrisley Reed, Retired Executive Director 2008-04-15)

"Williams's passion for helping teachers look at content in new ways and with clever devices to engage their students is precisely what we need. This informative and well-designed book challenges educators to think outside of the box." (Dennis Denenberg, Professor Emeritus 2008-04-21)

"Great teachers are national treasures, and Yohuru Williams is one of them. In this book he shares ideas and teaching methods. He also includes some terrific historic vignettes." (Joy Hakim, Author 2008-05-14)

"Williams is one of the most knowledgeable and exciting history education presenters in the nation. Finally, teachers will have the opportunity to read, digest, and implement these fantastic teaching methods into their lessons." (Kevin T. Brady, President 2008-06-16)

Some practical strategies, but no big picture
By Ms. Me
I was really looking forward to this. While there's some good stuff in here, this is more a collection of conceptual frames than a comprehensive guide to historical investigation. The strategies would be more effective with younger students or those just getting acquainted with the idea that history is something alive rather than something to be discovered and interpreted.

The good include his "Haunted History" mysteries and ESP (+C) as a simple alternative acronym to PERSIA/SPICE/SPERM or other, longer mnemonics for getting at the different lenses of history. His idea of history as a 4-way traffic intersection has also been a useful analogy. However, it's lacking the theoretical background or the how-to of other books in this genre.

If you work with middle schoolers or are looking for smaller ways to help students become more active in constructing the past, this is a good option. If you're looking for a more how-to book, check out Bruce Lesh. If you're looking for a more comprehensive guide, check out work by Sam Wineburg or Jeff (?) Nokes.

A 'CSI' approach offering six strategies to tap into a student's curiosity
By Midwest Book Review
Yohuru Rashied Williams' TEACHING U.S. HISTORY BEYOND THE TEXTBOOK: SIX INVESTIGATIVE STRATEGIES, GRADES 5-12 is written by a history education teacher and offers a unique approach to middle to high school students - a 'CSI' approach offering six strategies to tap into a student's curiosity. From how students can learn to use primary and secondary sources to solve historical mysteries to sample lessons and case studies, it's a fine set of sample lessons and an approach which blends with national standards making it a fine pick for teachers as well as curriculum developers. A fine education library pick.

Always On My Desk
By Pat
I have this book and I use it religiously. I write scholarly units for teacher programs for two Ivy League Universities and I depend on Dr. William's strategies to help me to deliver the information to my students. My students come into class ASKING if they can do CSI or another one which he developed called "What's On Your Plate?" . I have included Dr. Williams' book in every scholarly, researched based unit I have written ( I have written five to date ). If you want your kids to dig deeper, get excited, and hit your objectives, then this is the book for you.
