About the Author

Patti Drapeau is an educational consultant, trainer, author, and internationally known presenter. She has over twenty-five years of classroom experience teaching students and coordinating programs in Freeport, Maine. Drapeau currently serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Southern Maine, where she teaches graduate courses in differentiation, curriculum integration, critical and creative thinking, education of the gifted and talented, and curriculum and methods for teaching gifted and talented students. She is also a certified trainer for the IIM (Independent Investigation Method) research model.

Drapeau developed a curriculum model for the regular classroom called Affective Perspectives: Combining Critical Thinking, Creative Thinking, and Affect. She has authored a variety of articles for the Maine Exchange and is the author of the best-selling book Great Teaching with Graphic Organizers, published by Scholastic Publishers. 

Drapeau is an international presenter in the United States and Canada, presenting at hundreds of national, state, and regional conferences as well as conducting district workshops focused on the needs of all students. She presents keynotes and workshop sessions that are designed to be:

About the Author

Thomas R. Lindlof is a Professor in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications at the University of Kentucky. He received his B.A. from the University of Florida, and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to joining the University of Kentucky faculty, he served on the faculty at the Pennsylvania State University. His research and graduate teaching are focused on the cultural analysis of mediated communication, media audience theory and research, social uses of communication technology, and interpretive research methods. His research has appeared in numerous scholarly outlets, including Communication Research, the Journal of Communication, the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, Journalism Quarterly, Journalism Studies, the Journal of Media and Religion, the Social Science Computer Review, and Communication Yearbook. He has served as the editor of the Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, and currently serves on the editorial boards of four journals. He has written or edited five books. His latest book, Hollywood under Siege: Martin Scorsese, the Religious Right, and the Culture Wars, was published by the University Press of Kentucky in 2008.



Bryan C. Taylor, Associate Professor, specializes in interpretive research methods, organizational communication, and cultural studies. His principal research program involves studies of nuclear and (post-) Cold War communication. This research explores ideological articulations of gender, ethnicity, technology, and (ir)rationality in organizational and cultural discourse. He is also interested in cultural studies of identity, technology, gender, organization, and media. His research has been published in Journal of Applied Communication Research, Communication Research, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, Journal of Contemporary Ethnography, Quarterly Journal of Speech, Rhetoric and Public Affairs, Studies in Cultures, Organizations, and Societies, and elsewhere. Current projects include a book about the impact of the Cold War on the speech communication discipline. He received his B.A. (1983) from the University of Massachusetts, his M.A.(1987) and Ph.D. (1991) from the University of Utah. Prior to joining the CU-Boulder faculty in 1995 he served on the faculty at Texas A&M University. He was the 1998 recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Rhetorical and Communication Theory Division of NCA.

Must Have Book!

If you are a communication student who wants to study qualitative research methods then it's definitely a must read book. One of the very few books that discusses qualitative methods from communication perspective. They use easy to digest language and illustrate everything with stories to make it easier to understand. It's very basic though so it will be suitable for students who take intro class to qualitative methods.

Communication overload

This book was too verbose. As I read the book, I caught myself wanting to tell the author to just get to the point. Most of the book is also very anecdotal, which I thought was overused. Overall, the book presents some interesting topics but I wouldn't suggest it for someone who sought general information on qualitative research methods.

About the Author
Jacky Lumby (Ph.D. University of Leicester) is Professor of Education and Head of the School of Education at the University of Southampton, UK. She has taught and led in a range of educational settings, including secondary/high schools, community and further/technical education. She has also worked for a Training and Enterprise Council, with a regional responsibility for developing leaders across the public and private sectors. She has researched and published widely on educational policy, leadership and management in schools and colleges, in the UK and internationally. Her work on leadership encompasses a range of perspectives, including diversity issues, comparative and international perspectives and leading upper secondary education. She has co-edited International handbook on the preparation and development of school leaders (2008). Her most recent book is, with Marianne Coleman, Leadership and Diversity: Challenging Theory and Practice in Education (2007). She is co- editor of the journal International Studies in Educational Administration and a member of the Council of the British Educational Leadership, Management and Administration Society.

Fenwick W. English (Ph.D.) is the R. Wendell Eaves Senior Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership in the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a position he has held since 2001. As a scholar/practitioner he has held positions as a school principal and superintendent of schools in California and New York and as a department chair, dean, and vice-chancellor of academic affairs at universities in Ohio and Indiana. He is the former President of the University Council of Educational Administration (UCEA) and of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA). His research has been reported in national and international academic forums. He edited the 2006 SAGE Encyclopedia of Educational Leadership and Administration, the 2009 SAGE Library of Educational Thought and Practice: Educational Leadership and Administration; and the 2011 SAGE Handbook of Educational Leadership (2nd Ed.). In 2013, he received the Living Legend Award from NCPEA for his lifetime contribution to the field of educational leadership.

About the Author
Amy J. Mazur, Ed.D., lead faculty in bilingual special education and a professor at the George Washington University, has been involved in teacher preparation for over 30 years. She has long been an advocate for the minority student who, as a result of poverty, health and developmental issues, immigrant status, or level of English language acquisition, has not been provided access to appropriate educational service delivery. Dr. Mazur has served as the chair of the Special Education Special Interest Group of the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE); and she has been a member of the editorial staff of the Division for Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Exceptional Learners (DDEL), a division of the Council for Exceptional Children. Throughout her career, Dr. Mazur has presented at national and international conferences, advocating for the rights of minority students as well as the skills needed to prepare professionals to teach to the needs of all students. She lives in Washington, D.C., and is the mother of two children, Arin and Adam, both of whom have been an inspiration to her as she seeks to promote social justice and equity.

About the Author

Leslie Cooley worked as a school psychologist in public schools for 20 years. Initially hired in 1978 to facilitate counseling groups, she approached the task with enthusiasm and massive naivete as she had little training in group counseling. Based on her natural optimism and easy way of relating to students, she developed a variety of skills and techniques that were closely related to the later work of the innovators of solution-focused counseling.

That was 1978 to 1983. Since that time, Cooley has earned a PhD and is a licensed clinical psychologist in California. In the 1990s, she transitioned from working in the schools to teaching at the graduate level in school psychology at California State University, Sacramento. Her mission was to surreptitiously infiltrate the school system with what were once radical ideas about building on strengths. In that, she has been successful… successfully mainstream! Solution-focused strategies are no longer radical, and books like Seligman’s Positive Psychology have become bestsellers. Cooley continues to do a limited psychotherapy practice with a focus on families and she continues to believe that most of the problems kids develop can be successfully managed at the school level, where any intervention is less intrusive than a referral to someone outside the school.

As a graduate school trainer in school psychology, Cooley has been teaching group counseling to school psychologists for over a decade. She is systematically robbing graduate students of the character-building experience that she had scrambling to learn to run groups in the schools. However, in the schools today, there is plenty to scramble about already!

Excellent resource for new counselors and grad students

Bought this book to help me with a simulated counseling project for my grad school class. It was a great resource. I will hold on to this and use it for my internship coming up. Good resource for grad students and new counselors.

About the Author
Alfred S. Posamentier is professor of mathematics education and dean of the School of Education at the City College of the City University of New York. He has authored and co-authored several resource books in mathematics education for Corwin Press.

Stephen Krulik is professor of mathematics education at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he is responsible for the undergraduate and graduate preparation of mathematics teachers for Grades K-12, as well as in the inservice training of mathematics teachers at the graduate level. He teaches a wide variety of courses, among them the History of Mathematics, Methods of Teaching Mathematics, and the Teaching of Problem Solving. Before coming to Temple University, he taught mathematics in the New York City public schools for 15 years, where he created and implemented several courses designed to prepare students for the SAT examination. Nationally, Krulik has served as a member of the committee responsible for preparing the Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics of the National Council of Teacher of Mathematics (NCTM). He was also the editor of the NCTM’s 1980 yearbook Problem Solving in School Mathematics. He is the author or co-author of more than 20 books for teachers of mathematics, including Assessing Reasoning and Problem Solving: A Sourcebook for Elementary School Teachers. He has served as a consultant to and has conducted many workshops for school district throughout the United States and Canada, as well as delivering major presentations in Austria, Hungary, Australia, and international professional meetings, where his major focus is on preparing all students to reason and problem-solve in their mathematics classroom, as well as in their lives. Krulik received his BA degree in mathematics from Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, and his MA and EdD in mathematics education from Columbia University’s Teachers College.

Great book. No problem!

This book is an excellent introduction to various approaches of solving problems in mathematics. The methods are clearly explained and the examples enable the reader to explore the various approaches in action. Before reading this book I had some vague ideas about how to help students solve problems. Armed with this I can take a systematic approach to helping them with various methods. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. About the Author
Jody L. Maanum has taught in both the general and special education settings for 13 years, working diligently to implement best practice techniques and differentiated strategies to meet the individual needs of all students. Maanum is currently the literacy coach and Response to Intervention training specialist for the Midwest Special Education Cooperative in West Central Minnesota. She has been instrumental in promoting early literacy achievement in all children and fully implementing the RTI model in the nine school districts within the cooperative in which she works. She received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Concordia College and obtained a master of science degree in special education from the University of Minnesota, Moorhead.

NO PAGE NUMBERS!!!

IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!! I AM READING THIS BOOK FOR MY GRADUATE DEGREE, GUESS WHAT? I HAVE PAGES ASSIGNED TO READ AND I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO FIND THEM!! I AM SO UPSET RIGHT NOW. I REALLY WANT MY MONEY BACK. THIS IS USELESS FOR ME.

Great Resource for Teachers

This book is a great resource for general educators. It may not be a book that you read cover to cover and refer to all the time, but it is a book you will be thankful to have when you have a student in your class who you are striving to better understand and teach. About the first half of the book describes the special education disability categories, this section is very informative. The book then discusses the special education process, then continues on to provide strategies and techniques for teachers to better meet the needs of all students. The section that I found the most beneficial was the section titled "Access to the General Education Curriculum: Accommodations, Modifications, Strategies, and Assistive Technology". This section challenged me to examine my own teaching practices and future classroom setup. It made me think I will have to ask myself as a teacher: Am I maximizing the available resource that are to best serve my students? What can I do to make my classroom a learning environment that is conducive to all students' learning?

I would recommend this book to teachers. It is a resource that can help you better understand your students with special needs, as well as provide you with resources and ideas to maximize your students' learning potential.

Brilliant information!

I absolutely love this book! I am a secondary science educator candidate and can refer to this book for instructional strategies to help my students reach the learning goal in a manner that is appropriate for their disability. I highly recommend this book to any educator!!! I will most definitely have this book in my classroom for reference!
