About the Author
Jody L. Maanum has taught in both the general and special education settings for 13 years, working diligently to implement best practice techniques and differentiated strategies to meet the individual needs of all students. Maanum is currently the literacy coach and Response to Intervention training specialist for the Midwest Special Education Cooperative in West Central Minnesota. She has been instrumental in promoting early literacy achievement in all children and fully implementing the RTI model in the nine school districts within the cooperative in which she works. She received her bachelor of arts degree in elementary education from Concordia College and obtained a master of science degree in special education from the University of Minnesota, Moorhead.

IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY!! I AM READING THIS BOOK FOR MY GRADUATE DEGREE, GUESS WHAT? I HAVE PAGES ASSIGNED TO READ AND I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO FIND THEM!! I AM SO UPSET RIGHT NOW. I REALLY WANT MY MONEY BACK. THIS IS USELESS FOR ME.

Great Resource for Teachers

This book is a great resource for general educators. It may not be a book that you read cover to cover and refer to all the time, but it is a book you will be thankful to have when you have a student in your class who you are striving to better understand and teach. About the first half of the book describes the special education disability categories, this section is very informative. The book then discusses the special education process, then continues on to provide strategies and techniques for teachers to better meet the needs of all students. The section that I found the most beneficial was the section titled "Access to the General Education Curriculum: Accommodations, Modifications, Strategies, and Assistive Technology". This section challenged me to examine my own teaching practices and future classroom setup. It made me think I will have to ask myself as a teacher: Am I maximizing the available resource that are to best serve my students? What can I do to make my classroom a learning environment that is conducive to all students' learning?

I would recommend this book to teachers. It is a resource that can help you better understand your students with special needs, as well as provide you with resources and ideas to maximize your students' learning potential.

I am a secondary science educator candidate and can refer to this book for instructional strategies to help my students reach the learning goal in a manner that is appropriate for their disability. I highly recommend this book to any educator!!! I will most definitely have this book in my classroom for reference!

Nancy G. Calley, Ph.D., LPC is associate professor and chair of the Department of Counseling and Addiction Studies at the University of Detroit Mercy. She is also the clinical director of Spectrum Human Services, Inc. and Affiliated Companies. She has worked in the mental health and human services field for more than 2 decades primarily in the areas of juvenile justice, child welfare, mental health, substance abuse treatment, and traumatic brain injury. She has developed several clinically-based programs and has published numerous articles on program development and juvenile sex offenders, as well as other areas. She continues to be highly active in comprehensive program development efforts today.

The Best Cookbook for Program Design

This is a great cook book on program design offering an easily accessible introduction to the main components of the whole process. What struck me was the revelation that much of my work actually involved creating programs rather than ubiquitous 'projects'. Nancy's excellent book shows you how to do it with very useful illustrations of how and when things go wrong. The
breadth and depth of exposition is awe inspiring with the span emphasizing the importance of costing and due diligence activities. This is a text that inspires you to create success with a clear understanding of where the barriers and bear pits lie. Well done Nancy!

I found the book to be erudite, thorough and timely! It provided all of the essential knowledge and tools needed to successfully manage and lead human/social service organizations. I wish that I would have read it 15 years ago. Excellent book.

Relatively easy book to follow along with. The course work my graduate professor had me complete was in some ways tedious but also opened some areas of learning. I think it's well written and not AS dry as most psych books.

Practical Statistics Offers Practical Solutions To Not So Practical Concepts

As an undergrad in Sociology, one of the unsavory aspects of my studies is the quantifying (and qualifying) of virtually every type of individual and group behavior known to the human race. My problem is, I'm terrible with numbers and equations. And if that isn't enough, the textbooks I've been forced to buy (at astronomical prices) only make the topics foggier.

That's why I'm taking the time to comment on this great book. It's obvious that Practical Statistics was written for folks like me. The author is certainly hip to everything I've been struggling with for the last couple of years. SPSS and Stata are explained so a high school kid could easily understand them. And the chapters on regression (including linear, ordered, logistic, negative binomial and Piosson) have brought clarity to these concepts that I could never have imagined.

What I particularly like is the step-by-step, no nonsense approach with real-to-life examples. This book is so much more useful than the expensive texts I was required to purchase for my stats courses. I'm sure I could have graduated without this book but I'm so glad to have found it because it's been truly useful to me in understanding something that has never come easy.

Very clear and practical

I work with both Stata and SPSS and have a few books about each one. If you want to buy only one book to cover the most commonly used statistical methods, this is the one to buy. It covers some functions in SPSS which is rarely covered in other books. However the book is short in repeated measures and post hoc analysis, this is the reason I do not give 5 star.

Statistics and Quantitative Methods

As an undergraduate in Psychology, I realized early on that taking Statistics was a mandatory course. It was one that I was really dreading to even attempt until finding this book. The usual text books which i'm sure many people can share my view with, have overwhelming amounts of information and even the simplified versions written by authors still make the topic of Statistical Analysis intimidating by using complex methods. I was surprised by reading through the first few chapters that not only did I actually understand the terminology of what a variable was, or what it meant when something is correlated, but I could also follow the examples. This book has a great layout which aids the learner to get accustomed to the bold words without sifting through tons of text and having to figure out key points. Why Great Teachers Quit

Farber does an excellent job of describing why the professional mortality rate in public school teaching is so high, and why many of the casualties are just those teachers whom we can least afford to lose. The list of reasons is formidable: abuse of standardized testing; teachers powerless to control violence and chaos in the classroom; dilapidated, miserably maintained schools; ever-increasing expectations that must be met with ever-decreasing resources; an inept bureaucracy that is more interested in shifting blame and finding scapegoats than in addressing the problems; compensation that is far less than that available in fields making similar demands for intelligence, training, and skill; parents who micromanage their child's education; parent who don't give two hoots about their child's education; schools and teachers blamed for a host of socioeconomic ills (poverty, family breakdown, etc.) over which they have no control whatsoever. As one who has mentored school science and math projects for years and done a lot of volunteering in the schools, I was not surprised by Farber's extensive and accurate indictments. One of the results I've seen as a university prof has been the tendency of the brighter students to avoid careers in education as if they were the plague. Who wants a job (no longer a profession!) that is viewed with such contempt by our society?

I am less happy with Farber's proposed solutions to these problems. While her solutions are very reasonable, by and large, I fear the chances of their being implemented in America as it exists today are absolutely zero. In the long haul, this breakdown of our educational system will turn the U.S. into a second-rate or third-rate country. American politicians and the American people seem to be very much more interested in finding scapegoats and remaining in denial than in dealing with our badly broken public school system.

By compiling stories from teachers across the nation, Katy Farber identifies the consistent problems which follow the profession. While the stories may scare some from becoming a teacher, they provide solace to those who have remained in education and provide a base of mutual understanding among teachers, administrators and board members. Why Great Teachers Quit should be read by all groups and used as a workbook to bridge the frustrations and help fix the situations that often send the best into other occupations.

About the Author

Carla F. Shelton has 11 years of teaching experience in the special education profession. She has taught students with disabilities in Grades 2–12 in resource, self-contained, and inclusion settings. Shelton is certified in the areas of specific learning disabilities, emotional/behavior disorders, mildly intellectual disabilities, elementary grades (P-8), school counseling (P-12), and educational leadership and supervision. She has served as a high school counselor for the past five years, working with students in Grades 9–12. Shelton is the author of Best Practices for Secondary School Counselors.

Shelton is knowledgeable in instructional techniques and best classroom practices that promote and foster student learning. She is skilled in designing and implementing strategies to assist students with disabilities in meeting academic and behavior goals and objectives, to bridge the gap between school and parents, and to assist students with the transition process from school-to-school and to postsecondary endeavors. Shelton has mastered the art of collaboration with regular education teachers and staff and works effectively with families of students with disabilities. She has presented at the High Schools That Work Summer Conference, the National Tech Prep Conference, the Georgia School Counselor Conference, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Annual Conference. Shelton’s professional affiliations include the American School Counselor Association, Georgia School Counselor Association, National Tech Prep Network, and Professional Association of Georgia Educators. Alice B. Pollingue is a tenured assistant professor of education at Augusta State University. She has been teaching at the university for more than fourteen years. Currently, Pollingue teaches special education courses to undergraduate and graduate students and is the supervising professor for the entire special education teacher-training program. She develops curriculum for new special education courses offered at the university. In addition, Pollingue is a consultant for school systems in surrounding areas. She has published articles in the Journal of Early Education and the Journal of Special Education. She is active in both local and national professional organizations. Pollingue received her doctorate degree from the University of Alabama.

Richard A. Villa is president of Bayridge Consortium, Inc. His primary field of expertise is the development of administrative and instructional support systems for educating all students within general education settings. Villa is recognized as an educational leader who inspires and works collaboratively with others to implement current and emerging exemplary educational practices. His work has resulted in the inclusion of children with intensive cognitive, physical, and emotional challenges as full members of the general education community in the school districts where he has worked and consulted. Villa has been a classroom teacher, special education administrator, pupil personnel services director, and director of instructional services and has authored 4 books and over 70 articles and chapters. Known for his enthusiastic, humorous style, Villa has presented at international, national, and state educational conferences and has provided technical assistance to departments of education in the United States, Canada, Vietnam, and Honduras and to university personnel, public school systems, and parent and advocacy organizations.

Jacqueline S. Thousand, PhD, is professor emerita in the College of Education, Health and Human Services at California State University San Marcos, teaching and facilitating special education professional preparation and master’s programs. Prior to living in California, she directed the Inclusion Facilitator and Early Childhood Special Education graduate and postgraduate professional preparation programs at the University of Vermont. While there, she also coordinated several federal grants, all concerned with providing professional development for educators to facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities in local schools. Jacqueline is a nationally known teacher, author, systems change consultant, and advocate for disability rights and inclusive education. She has authored numerous books, research articles, and chapters on issues related to inclusive schooling, organizational change, differentiated instruction and universal design, cooperative group learning, creative problem solving, and co-teaching and collaborative planning. She is actively involved in local school reform initiatives in the San Diego area, most recently assisting elementary, middle, and high schools in establishing co-teaching and Multi-Tiered System of Support approaches to provide all students access to the core curriculum and early intervention supports. She also is actively involved in international teacher education endeavors and serves on the editorial boards of several national and international journals. Jacqueline is a versatile communicator who is known for her creative, fun-filled, action-oriented teaching style.



Ann I. Nevin is professor emerita at Arizona State University and visiting professor at Florida International University. The author of books, research articles, and numerous chapters, Nevin is recognized for her scholarship and dedication to providing meaningful, practice-oriented, research-based strategies for teachers to integrate students with special learning needs. Since the 1970s, she has co-developed various innovative teacher education programs that affect an array of personnel, including the Vermont Consulting Teacher Program, Collaborative Consultation Project Re-Tool sponsored by the Council for Exceptional Children, the Arizona State University program for special educators to infuse self-determination skills throughout the curriculum, and the Urban SEALS (Special Education Academic Leaders) doctoral program at Florida International University. Her advocacy, research, and teaching spans more than 38 years of working with a diverse array of people to help students with disabilities succeed in normalized school environments. Nevin is known for action-oriented presentations, workshops, and classes that are designed to meet the individual needs of participants by encouraging introspection and personal discovery for optimal learning.

About the Author
John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He teaches courses on mixed methods research, qualitative inquiry, and general research design. In these three areas, he has authored numerous scholarly journal articles, book chapters and books. He is currently working on his 22nd book (including new editions), and his books are translated into many languages around the world. At Nebraska he founded the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research and has held the Clifton Endowed Chair. He also co-founded the SAGE journal, the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and has been a popular speaker on mixed methods and qualitative research in the US and abroad. As an applied research methodologist, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and as a consultant for the VA health services research unit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a methodologist, he helped to design the methods for a number of successful NIH and NSF projects. He has been a Senior Fulbright Specialist scholar to both South Africa (2008) and Thailand (2012) lecturing on qualitative and mixed methods approaches to research. Recently, he served as a co-leader of a national working group developing “best practices” for mixed methods research at the National Institutes of Health in the US. Invaluable for researchers and PhD students

I initially bought this book when I writing the proposal for my PhD about three years ago and Cresswell's little gem proved invaluable during that time. The book is very well written and unlike other books on the topic, Cresswell is not content with explaining theory and providing examples but goes further to provide excellent templates for the process, writing, structure, and format of every phase of the research process. These 'templates,' coupled with a clear writing style and an excellent, logical structure, elevate the book from 'very useful' to 'invaluable' in my opinion.

For example, in chapter 4: The Introduction, he begins by explaining the purpose of the Introduction and its importance and then provides models for writing introduction in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research. This format is mirrored in almost every chapter including Chapter 2: Review of the literature where he provides an excellent process for maximizing the effectiveness of the initial literature review process. In Chapter 5, he simplifies purpose statements with step-by-step guidelines for the three methodologies while in Chapter 6 he does the same for the research questions and hypotheses.

While Cresswell is an Educational Researcher himself, he does not limit the examples in the book to his field but endeavors to include samples from the social and human sciences including justice, management, psychology, sociology and marketing. These numerous examples throughout every chapter of the book serve to illustrate the templates and guidelines effectively, leaving little doubt in the reader's mind on the 'how' of applying the guidelines.

Overall, this is the best of the pick if you need clear, straightforward guidelines on writing a proposal or planning your research project. If you are considering a Mixed Methods methodolgy, then I would strongly recommend Creswell's other book, written with Vicki Clark, Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research.

Great Book for Beginning Researchers

My impression of "Research Design" is that Creswell sincerely wanted readers to understand how to conduct thorough research with confidence. While I focused more on the chapters on qualitative and mixed-methods research, the quantitative chapter was equally easy to understand as the more inquiry-based methods. As an education student, I've always feared doing quantitative research, however this book makes it as available and comprehensible as either of the other two methods discussed. However, I would venture to guess that if you were in a highly technical field, this book would not suffice to supply you with the complete methodologies to conduct quantitative research.
The author conveniently structures each chapter with the learner in mind. For each section of the book, Creswell supplies easy to follow steps and checklists for students and researchers to cover most angles of research. At the completion of each chapter (all of which are short and easy to digest), there is a small section on writing practice to provide practical application for the reader who might not have a professor to rely on for further instruction, or for the professor who wants an easy, practical assignment right from the text. I studied this book independently, and while I feel a second read through might be in order, it was absolutely easy to understand and useful in my independent study.
I recommend this book for its straightforward style and practical approach to conducting basic research.

This book was required for a Master's research class. It is detailed, but easy to read, and I read every page! This is one for the bookcase, if you're involved in research report writing, you'll want this around as a reference.

About the Author
Sandi W. Smith (Ph.D., University of Southern California) is Professor in the Department of Communication at Michigan State University, where she teaches courses in persuasion, communication theory, and interpersonal communication, and Director of the Health and Risk Communication Center. Her research interests parallel these course topics, and her research has been funded by foundations and government agencies such as the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Fetzer Institute, the U. S. Department of Education, and the National Cancer Institute. In specific, she has focused her research on the impact of memorable messages received from important others on health behaviors; persuading people to carry signed and witnessed organ donor cards and to engage in family discussion about their decisions related to organ donation; encouraging college students to consume alcohol moderately, if at all; and the portrayal of interpersonal relationships on television. Among her more than sixty publications are articles that appeared in Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, Health Communication, Journal of Health Communication, Journal of Communication, and the Journal of Applied Communication Research, among others. She is active in the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association where she served as Chair of the Interpersonal Communication Division. She has received honors for her teaching and research from student groups, professional associations, and the universities at which she has worked. In 2007, she was honored with the Distinguished Faculty Award at Michigan State University, and in 2008 she received the B. Aubrey Fisher Mentorship Award from ICA.

Steven R. Wilson (Ph.D., Purdue University) is Professor in the Department of Communication at Purdue University. He also has been a faculty member at Michigan State, Northern Illinois, and Northwestern Universities. His research and teaching focus on interpersonal communication, social influence, and aggression/conflict. He is the author of Seeking and Resisting Compliance: Why Individuals Say What They Do When Trying to Influence Others (Sage, 2002), for which he received the Gerald R. Miller book award from the National Communication Association’s interpersonal communication division in 2005. He also has published more than 50 articles and chapters in communication journals such as Communication Monographs, Communication Research, and Human Communication Research, interdisciplinary journals such as Child Abuse & Neglect, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Journal of Language and Social Psychology, and edited volumes such as the Handbook of Communication and Social Interaction Skills and the Handbook of Communication Science (2nd ed.). His recent research explores patterns of parent-child interaction in families at risk for child maltreatment as well as patterns associated with children’s school readiness (funded by the Lilly Endowment). He is active in both the National Communication Association and the International Communication Association, and has served as chair of the interpersonal communication division for both associations. From 2001-2003, he served as one of five associate editors of the interdisciplinary journal Personal Relationships. In 2008, he was honored with the Bernard Brommel Award for Outstanding Scholarship or Distinguished Service in Family Communication from NCA.

A New "Go To" Book in IPC

New Directions in Interpersonal Communication Research does a great job at providing an overview of the major topics in interpersonal communication. Each chapter is well written by leading scholars in the field. The book is divided into four sections: Metatheoretical Approaches to Interpersonal Communication Research, Basic Interpersonal Processes, The Light and Dark Sides of Interpersonal Communication and Relationships, Media, and Culture. Each chapter focuses one of the major theories of interpersonal communication and provides insight on the direction of current research. This book is sure to become a staple in graduate interpersonal classes and has become my to "go to" book for communication theory.

Outstanding collection

This is one of the best edited collections I've read in IPC. The breadth of coverage is fantastic, and many of the chapter authors cram an amazing amount of information into quite a small space while somehow also making the chapter readable and interesting. The Burleson chapter on supportive communication and the Burgoon & Levine chapter on deception are wonderful summaries of long-running programs of research.
