About the Author

Anna Leon-Guerrero is a professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. A recipient of the university’s Faculty Excellence Award and the K. T. Tang Award for Excellence in Research, she teaches courses on statistics, sociological theory, and social problems. As a social service program evaluator and consultant, she has focused her research on welfare reform, employment strategies for the working poor, and program assessment. She is the coauthor of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society and Essentials of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society (with Chava Frankfort-Nachmias).

About the Author

John J. Hoover is Associate Professor of Research at the University of Colorado Boulder and a former K–12 special educator, teaching diverse students representing multiple languages and cultures in western, southwestern, and mid-western states. He earned a BA in Elementary and Special Education (Intellectual Disabilities), an MA in Learning Disabilities and Emotional Disorders with an emphasis in Reading, and a PhD in Curriculum specializing in Special Education. His research agenda for the past two decades has focused on the topic of culturally and linguistically responsive special education referral and assessment of English language and other diverse learners. He is currently PI on three, multi-year grant funded projects addressing ELs and multi-tiered supports, special education referral and assessment of culturally and linguistically diverse learners, and graduate level teacher preparation for teaching English language and other diverse learners with and without disabilities. Select recent or in-development coauthored/coedited books include: IEPs for ELLs, And other diverse learners (In Development, Corwin), Linking assessment to instruction: Selecting reading, writing and mathematics interventions (Pearson); Differentiating learning differences from learning and behavioral disabilities: Teaching diverse learners through multi-tiered response to intervention (Allyn & Bacon); and Methods for teaching culturally and linguistically diverse exceptional learners (Pearson Merrill). He also is co-author of a nationally normed reading test, Early Reading Assessment (Pro-Ed), and of a research-based educator self-assessment and professional development tool, Core ESL Instructional Practices (CEIP) Guide. Recent referred journal publications include: Increasing usage of ESL instructional practices in a rural county elementary school, Rural Educator (In press); Culturally responsive special education referrals of English learners in one rural county school district: Pilot project, Rural Special Education Quarterly (In press), and Reducing unnecessary referrals: Guidelines for teachers of diverse learners, Teaching Exceptional Children (2012).

Norman K. He is past editor of The Sociological Quarterly, co-editor (with Yvonna S. Lincoln) of four editions of the Handbook of Qualitative Research, coeditor (with Michael D. Giardina) of eight plenary volumes from the annual Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, co-editor (with Lincoln) of the methods journal Qualitative Inquiry, founding editor of Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies and International Review of Qualitative Research, and editor of three book series.

Disappointing after 1st and 2nd edition

I was so excited to order the latest edtion of the Handbook of Qualitative Research. Earlier version have been like a bible to me and my PhD students. This edition is less than half the size but about the same price so not good value for money. Futher, I went straight to action research and found that chapter which had previously been so strong now makes all kinds of assumptions and does not lay out the core basic knowledge that new researchers need. It is as if the authors are talking only to experts and they are the people least likely to need a book as good as Denzin and Lincoln can produce. I feel 'burned' and I'll be very wary of buying another edition.

Caution, this is not a review of the 4th edition per se but a comment on Amazon's habitual lumping reviews from any edition of a title into one and the same.

Here is a quote from the text under : "As with earlier editions, the Fourth Edition is virtually a new volume."

The most helpful viewpoint is even older, probably for the 2nd edition based on the posted date, August 22nd, 2004.

As with other compendiums of articles from cutting edge pioneers in a field, an older edition may have the material you want or may not. Examine carefully the table of contents of whichever edition you decide to purchase. Sometimes articles by the respective authors and on the respective topic may be just as readily available through electronic journals, assuming you are a grad student or working in higher ed.

Fourth edition a disappointment

Don't bother with the fourth edition. The second is terrific; I'm going to request the third from interlibrary loan to see if it's worthwhile. The fourth edition doesn't have the basic articles about qualitative research that made the second edition shine.

Practical & Helpful

This is a great quick reference book with many practical and easy to implement strategies. There are enough varied strategies to give you options for a child who is having a difficult time in the classroom. You will be surprised at how many of these simple tips really work. I have been to several workshop given by the Appelbaum company (Marilyn Appelbaum's company)and have always come away with strategies that I can use right away. This book is like a reference book for the workshops!

a treasure trove of ideas!

I found this book to be an amazing source of ideas for all kinds of kids. I would suggest readers don't focus on the chapter titles (according to disabilities), but consider all ideas for all students. I train teachers about students with skills deficits in behavior and emotional regulation, and I am happy to recommend it to all.

Mary Harrington received a B.S. in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University, an M.A, in Psychology from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in Behavioral, anatomical and Physiological Studies from Dalhousie University in Canada. Currently, she is the Tippit Professor in the Life Sciences at Smith College in Massachusetts. In addition, she is a member of the Neuroscience and Behavior Program at the University of Massachusetts as Amherst and an Adjunct Member of the Center for Neuro-endocrine Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Mary has published extensively in the Journals and has received research grants from NIH, NSF, Mellon Foundation and Pfizer. She is Associate Editor of the Journal of Neuroscience, Advisory Board Member for SOMAS (Support of mentors and their students in the neurosciences). She is an external reviewer for Neuroscience Program site visits and a Study Section Reviewer for NIH. She teaches various courses in the Psychology Department at both the undergraduate and graduate levels

About the Author

Gregory J. Privitera is an Associate Professor of Psychology at St. Bonaventure University. He received his Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience at the University at Buffalo and went on to complete post-doctoral research at Arizona State University before coming to St. Bonaventure. A veteran of the U.S. Marines, he is also the author of more than two dozen peer-reviewed articles and books on the role of social cognition and learning on eating behavior and health. His work has been recognized in a variety of ways, including university awards for teaching and research. He oversees a variety of undergraduate research projects at St. Bonaventure University with more than a dozen undergraduate student research projects leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals. In the community, Dr. Privitera is a member of the Board of Trustees for a local elementary and high school where his children attend the elementary school.

An extremely well written text!

There seems to be so many students who are overwhelmed by the word "statistics". This book has been written for them. The author organizes the chapters such that it is near impossible to miss his point. There are chapter outlines, a summary of equations in the chapter, a section for "tips and cautions for students, practice quizzes as well as word searches and crossword puzzles to keep the student involved (answers to these are in the back of the book!).

Not only are the equations explained but there are many helpful tips for using SPSS throughout the book as well as in an Appendix. If any criticism would be raised about this book it would be that there is a typo on page 489 where "Pearson" was entered "Person". Other than that, an excellent resource for the social science student!!!

Great way to learn mathematical basics of statistical tests with SPSS supplement

I'm using this book for a graduate level statistics course in social science. I like that this author uses small data sets to show how statistical tests can be done by hand instead of relying solely on SPSS, this makes the statistics seem much more approachable. This is also the first textbook that I found really clearly explained the reason for the difference in the number of degrees of freedom when calculating standard deviation for a population vs a sample. I appreciate that the author believes the reader is intelligent enough to understand the reason and gives it instead of most textbooks which just say "these formulas are different, just remember that, you don't need to know why." There are a lot of these little explanations within the text and they've really helped me feel confident in not just performing calculations, but understanding why the calculations are structured in the way they are. In addition, the conceptual problems within and at the end of chapter are great for making sure I understand how and when to apply each test. I also love that many of the end of chapter problems are based on published results, this helps me see how actual researchers apply statistics.

The only thing I dislike about this text is that some statistical tests have a minimum sample size, which means the small data sets used for practice are actually violating assumptions. I wish this was more clearly addressed within the text. Overall a great book and one I plan to hold onto after the semester is over.

Needs study guide

My son had to return it and get the book from the book store. There is some kind of a study guide that you can purchase (for more money) but only if you buy the book with it. So we returned it and purchased from the bookstore with the guide for more money, but he needed it. Amazon should offer this book with the option of study guide and obviously charge extra for that option.

As assistant secretary in the United States Department of Labor, Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote his report "The Negro Family: The Case for National Action" in 1965 as an internal document within the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson. It described alarming trends in black employment, poverty, and education and argued that they were exacerbated by black family instability. While Moynihan called for a jobs program to employ black men and stabilize families, the report was attacked as an attempt to blame blacks rather than the injustices in American society and widely vilified as sexist and racist in liberal circles.

Now more than 40 years later, this issue of The ANNALS reviews this controversial yet "prophetic report" through a new lens, bringing together some of the country's foremost social scientists to consider how its arguments and predictions have fared in subsequent years and how the controversy surrounding it influenced social science in the late 20th century.

Data-Driven and Non-Ideological

Moynihan referred to the 1965 employment situation of young black men as a major crisis and the primary cause of the instability of black families. The employment situation of young black men has deteriorated since then. This has led to a growing participation in illegal activities, a declining tendency to marry, and a tendency to disconnect from school and other mainstream behaviors at a relatively early age. He also noted continuing racial skill gaps, persisting discrimination, and urban segregation leading to growing participation in crime and noncustodial fatherhood, as well as a tendency for young black men to withdraw from the labor market. Not foreseen - the extent to which legitimate labor markets would deteriorate for all less-educated young men in the 1970s and beyond.

Authors of a study interviewing employers found strong negative associations with minority workers - particularly regarding dependability, motivation, attitude, and skill.

Another study found the many pressures on marriage and family formation seemingly uniquely relevant to blacks have been felt by low-income populations more generally. On the other hand, Asians and Latinos are moving closer to a 'white' category in terms of marriage and child-rearing.

Since the Moynihan Report was published, the proportion of African-American children born outside marriage has grown from 24% in 1965 to 69% in 2000. The debates continues over whether this is a consequence or cause of poverty.

More than half of non-marital children live with their father at the time of their first birthday, but this drops to 35% by their fifth. Father involvement drops dramatically after a 'breakup.'
