Review
"Belmonte reminds us that teaching is not always about what you teach, but how and why you teach. He asks teachers to become reflective practitioners who work with students, not for them, and that makes all the difference. Students turn into producers of knowledge, and teachers into artisans molding that beautiful vision with this philosophy of education." (Katherine Hogan, Founding Lead Teacher 2008-12-15)

"This book is unique. The author invites potential and experienced teachers to think more deeply about numerous facets of teaching we encounter but seldom consider. Teaching from the Deep End has story and heart. It also has a clear connection to the underbelly of the teaching and learning process; the author pushes those who teach to be more attuned to being consciously competent and not simply accidentally adequate. I learned a lot!" (Barrie Bennett, Professor of Education 2009-03-03)

"This book reframes the essence of what teaching is essentially about. The author provokes readers to think about their intentions and focuses on passion for teaching, the importance of knowing self, and the necessity of being cognizant of how bias and the use of language impact our work with students." (Sue Elliott, Teacher Counselor/Staff Developer 2009-03-03)

"This book is unique; the author invites potential and experienced teachers to think more deeply about numerous facets of teaching we encounter but seldom consider. I learned a lot!" (Barrie Bennett, Professor of Education 2009-06-05)

Stories of Transformative Leadership in the Human Services: Why the Glass Is Always Full, by Steve Burghardt, Willie Tolliver

"A fantastic book. . . .A major contribution! Stories of Transformative Leadership in the Human Services is an extraordinary book by two highly accomplished social work educators and consultants. Based on years of experience in the classroom and in the field,Steve Burghardt and Willie Tolliver blend their "best practices" into a pedagogically creative and lively text that students and human service professionals alike will find engaging and invaluable. Social service agencies and workers are under siege, especially now in our global economic crisis, but this book is guaranteed to help in the struggles ahead for a more humane and just social service practice."
―Robert Fisher, University of Connecticut, author of The People Shall Rule: ACORN, Community Organizing, and the Struggle for Economic Justice (Vanderbilt University Press, 2009.)

"A must read for directors, executives, funders, and board members! Given today's economic climate, there may not be funds for the hiring of consultants. Read Stories of Transformative Leadership in the Human Services and engage as an organizational team in their activities instead. You, your staff and the culture of the organization will be transformed. As Ghandi said, "Be the change you want to see.' The paradigm that Burghardt and Tolliver introduce will have you do just that."
―Claudette C'Faison, Cofounder and President of NY Youth at Risk, Inc.

Certain to excite and inspire both students entering the human services field and seasoned non-profit professionals, Stories of Transformative Leadership in the Human Services: Why the Glass Is Always Full is the first full-length leadership book to focus on the unique challenges of the public and non-profit executive, manager, and educator. Written in a lively story-telling style, the book develops a leadership model for those who inspire without bonuses and seek a powerful legacy through people's lives.

Authors Steve Burghardt and Willie Tolliver convey the stories of two social service agencies struggling to survive in a world of shrinking budgets, increasing needs, and lack of resources. While both agencies are run by hard-working managers, one is in constant crisis mode (racial tensions that simmer and boil over; professionals who end up exhausted and overeating after a crisis-filled day . . . every day), while the other, operating with no greater resources, lacks tension and turmoil as its managers respond to similar demands and client needs. Using real-life vignettes drawn from actual experiences, the stories distill important lessons and unfold in a powerful manner that will resonate with any professional asked to work harder . . . with a smaller budget. Questions woven through each story connect to the book's more theoretical material on leadership, personal mastery, and community-building.

A teacher must have!
By Kindle Customer
I encountered this book through one of my professors in grad school and I just had to get my own. It touchs on several topics that all teachers should be interested in. It is exactly what the title implies super book. I thought it would be helpful to have professionaly instead several different books on various topics and I am glad I got it.

No Child Left Behind made easy
By Amazon Customer
TNT will present the Ron Clark Story on Sunday night. Friends star, Matthew Perry, will play the teacher that cared about his students. Watching the movie will give you an idea of what Super Teaching is all about.

The theme of Super Teaching is also embodied in the quote from Senator Robert Kennedy:

"Some men see things that are and ask `Why?' and others see things the way they could be and ask `Why not?'"

Both Ron Clark and Sen. Robert Kennedy, along with Eric Jensen are people who ask "Why not?" They are not satisfied with the way things are and they want them to change. Jensen gave us a guide book to becoming an effective teacher - a way to shake up the way things have always been done. Jensen shows a way to get away from the teacher-centric classroom that turns learners off to a learner-centered lab where students can grow and achieve.

There are over 1000 tips in this book. It would take pages to do them justice. There are tips on learner planning, not lesson planning; tips on the classroom environment, with a huge emphasis on music; tips that address ways to reach Gardner's Multiple Intelligences; ways to make discipline effective; establishing relationships with your students; and how to do effective assessment of learning. It is almost a teacher certification program in one book.

I found that this book has more answers that I could ever formulate into questions. It is an invaluable tool that I will read over and over again. I truly believe that is every teacher used the tips presented in this book, then there would actually be No Child Left Behind!

Slightly disappointed
By Lou
First, I LOVE Eric Jensen. I have read both Teaching with the Brain in Mind as well as his recent Teaching with Poverty in Mind. TWPIM is definitely a must-read. I also had the privilege of attending his two-day workshop. AWESOME. I bought Super Teaching in response to that workshop in hopes of finding more of his energizers and working memory exercises. It only named a few and I had upwards of 20 from his workshop. The piece I found of most value was the specifics on room environment with regards to specific plants that foster learning. :)

Review
"The authors' work experience in over 400 low performing schools provides a platform to develop a successful working model to improve schools." (Randel Beaver, Superintendent 2010-06-29)

"The authors have clearly spent serious time in the 21st century schoolhouse. This book’s highly integrated presentation speaks to their fluency in the current language of teachers and instructional leaders. It should be required reading for every principal in America. Clear, powerful, accurate, and provocative writing."

(Rob Kesselring, Head Guide and CEO of UncommonSeminars.com 2010-06-29)

"Educators and policymakers need to add this outstanding book to their toolbox for implementing reform. This well-written volume explains how to reorganize schools into more effective enterprises and cites clear examples grounded in rich scientific studies. For those faced with how to make things happen and work smarter, this excellent book delivers on both!"
(Barbara Schneider, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor 2010-07-29)

"For a principal looking to reorganize the information flow within the building, this book would be a good place to start. It is a quick read and any of the last six chapters could be pulled out and studied individually." (Justin B. Henry, Superintendent School Administrator, April 2012 2012-05-03)
