It has been a pleasure to travel the country and hear first-hand from teachers the results they have achieved with "Academic Language! Academic Literacy!." The resonating response has been that the 36 strategies make a huge difference--especially for ELL's and struggling readers. When the principles and practices discussed in the book have been integrated throughout the core subject areas (social studies, math, science, and language arts), then student learning improves significantly. The drop-out rate will drop dramatically as students from low socio-economic backgrounds develop their academic language capacities. The research shows that students who are ELL's need explicit intervention support in academic language. Instructional Coaches and Administrators who develop a systematic interventions for their students will see increases in learning results. This book is a great practical description of academic language. Many states are now requiring the TPA for new and practicing teachers. One major component in the rubrics is academic language. This small book has the terminology and very practical advice.
