About the Author
David S. Hames earned his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior at the Kenan-Flagler School of Business, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He teaches courses in Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution, Human Resource Management and Labor-Management Relations. His research has been published in journals such as Group and Organization Management, Human Resource Management Review, Leadership and Organization Development Journal, Employee Responsibilities & Rights Journal, and Labor Law Journal. He is a member of the editorial board of the Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education. He has served as a labor arbitrator and as a mediator of employment disputes. Before becoming an academic, Dr. Hames served as the Human Resources Director at the Clinton Memorial Hospital, and as a professional recruiter in the Human Resources Department at Standard Oil of Indiana (now BP Amoco).

About the Author
Richard Krueger is professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota. He is an internationally recognized authority on the use of focus group interviewing within the public environment. For 25 years he served as evaluation leader for the University of Minnesota Extension Service followed by 10 years teaching graduate courses in program evaluation and research methodology. He is a former president of the American Evaluation Association and a member of the Qualitative Research Consultants Association. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.  In his spare time he repairs his motorcycle, swaps stories with friends, and shops for tools at the local hardware store. Maybe you’ve seen him there. 

Mary Anne Casey is an evaluator, writer, and teacher. She has been an evaluation consultant at the international, national, state, and local levels on topics relating to health, public policy, community development, agriculture, and the environment. Mary Anne has had the privilege of asking questions and listening, and the challenge of providing useful, enlightening results to clients. She relishes analysis and finding just the right way to convey what people have shared. She weaves the lessons she has learned into her work, her writing on focus group interviewing, and her teaching at the University of Minnesota, University of South Florida, and University of Michigan. Mary Anne previously worked for the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and the state of Minnesota. She received her PhD from the University of Minnesota. She gets her best insights while in the shower or on long walks.

Good general coverage of focus group methodology - quick and easy read.

I was trained as a focus group researcher more than 20 years ago, and used to do focus groups as part of my job. I haven't done any for a long time, and bought this book as a handy refresher. Krueger and Casey are two of the main authorities writing about focus group today, and this book seems to have been written as a textbook for an introductory class in qualitative methodology. That's all I needed - just wanted to dust off my skills. This was a quick read and helped me remember some things I haven't used in a long time. I think this would also be a handy guide for someone new to focus groups.

This book is an excellent guide to those who have interest in conducting qualitative research. It guides the reader to a step by step to conducting a grounded research as well as how and why to ask questions. I recommend this book where it is an excellent source for beginners and complicated qualitative researchers.

Practical Guide to Focus Groups

The best way to learn how to run focus groups is by apprenticing with an experienced master who is willing to teach you everything s/he knows. Failing that, read this book.

This delightfully straightforward manual tells you what you need to know to conduct solid focus groups. Unlike many research methods books, these authors use plain English and transparent language. It provides an especially good section on data analysis that I've read a number of times and continue to learn from. The authors also teach workshops on focus groups that are well worth attending if you can.

Some researchers see focus groups as a lazy or inadequate method of research. I'd argue that focus groups answer some questions that cannot be answered in any other way. The method is one of a number of valuable tools that belong in every qualitative researchers bag of tricks.

About the Author
Laura Rothstein is a Professor of Law and Distinguished University Scholar at the Louis D. Brandeis School of Law at the University of Louisville, where she served as Dean from 2000 to 2005. She received her B.A. in political science from the University of Kansas and her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. She began her career in legal education in 1976 and served on four other law school faculties before her appointment at the Brandeis School of Law. She began work on special education issues in 1979, while a visiting faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, where she also served as an attorney in the Developmental Disabilities Law Project clinical program. Professor Rothstein has written 15 books and dozens of book chapters, articles, and other works on disability discrimination, covering issues ranging from special education and employment to public accommodations and access to health care. Her work focuses on disability issues in schools and in higher education. The first edition of Special Education Law, published in 1990, was one of the first books on the topic. Professor Rothstein’s parents were public school teachers, and they reviewed the first edition of the book, ensuring that the text was accessible to law students, lawyers, and those without formal legal training. Some of her other publications focusing on special education issues have included works on school choice and students with disabilities, genetic testing in schools, students with HIV and other contagious and infectious diseases, and special education misconduct issues. She is a frequent presenter at national and regional conferences of legal and education professionals and academicians.

Scott F. Johnson is a Professor of Law at Concord Law School of Kaplan University and a Special Education Hearings Officer with the New Hampshire Department of Education. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and his J.D. from Franklin Pierce Law Center. He is the author of numerous articles and books in various areas of education law, and he frequently develops professional development programs for educators and presents at national conferences. Prior to teaching, Professor Johnson practiced law and was involved in a number of precedent-setting education law cases. He began as co-author of Special Education Law with the Fourth Edition, and he brings to the text current practical perspectives.

About the Author

William T. O’Donohue is a licensed clinical psychologist, professor of psychology and adjunct professor in the Department of Philosophy at University of Nevada, Reno, and a faculty member of the National Judicial College. He is widely recognized in the field for his proposed innovations in mental health service delivery, in treatment design and evaluation, and in knowledge of empirically supported cognitive behavioral therapies. He is a member of the Association for the Advancement for Behavior Therapy and served on the Board of Directors of this organization. Dr. O’Donohue has published over 50 books and 150 articles in scholarly journals and book chapters. For the past 14 years, he has been director of a free clinic that treats children who have been sexually abused and adults who have been sexually assaulted.

Steve Graybar received his B.S. in Psychology from Northern Arizona University. He received his M.A. in 1987 and Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Nevada, Reno. Currently he divides his time between his work at the University of Nevada and his private practice. He was honored by the Nevada State Psychological Association for career contributions related to his seven years of work on the Nevada Board of Psychological Examiners.

About the Author
Brigitte Le Roux has a doctorate in mathematics (specialty Statistics) (Faculty of Sciences in Paris, 1970) and holds an HDR in Applied Mathematics (University of Paris Dauphine, 2000). She is a member of the laboratory MAP5 (Applied Mathematics Paris 5) of the University Paris Descartes. His research focuses on the geometric data analysis and its applications in social sciences and in particular to the analysis of questionnaires.

great introduction to cultural analytics

This beautiful book also serves the purpose of being a great introduction to cultural analytics through a specific methodology. MCA is versatile, rich in variations and alternative or complementary paths. It basically requires a table of categories (that could be built out of variables that are not categorical, the book explains how). MCA is also quite easy to understand: how it's built and why it makes sense. Yes, the book contains some detailed mathematical definitions and demonstrations, specially regarding the variance and how the method is super-elegant and preserves many of the statistical properties one would wish. I believe mathematical equations can be overlooked without any harm of comprehension (I did it in part, and plan to re-read the book to touch those details when using the method in actual projects).

Finally, this is also a book about sociology and specially about part of Pierre Bourdieu's work. Along the book a table based on an actual survey about taste (essential concept in Bordieu's studies) is being used as the example of the different analyses and visualizations.

Extremely useful for social scientists!

I had been trying to learn multiple correspondence analysis for a while when Professor Lebaron, from Université d'Amiens/Picardie Jules Verne, told me about this book. It helped me trace a study program - from reviewing basic stistics, to learning how to use MCA softwares, to aplying the techniques - and interpreting data for my MA research. It's clear and pratical, like a guide or manual to this technique. Even social scientists who are not so familiar with statistics may use it pretty well.

Much-awaited handbook on MCA

This is truly a great book, for what it is, a 100- or so page book on MCA. Le roux and Rouanet are as didactic as Greenacre with the full-scale research studies at the end of the book. MCA is a powerful tool which should receive greater attention from American scholars interested in quantification.

Bruce J. Avolio

Dr. Avolio has an international reputation as a researcher and practitioner in leadership. He has consulted with public and private organizations in North and South America, Africa, Europe, and Southeast Asia, as well as in Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and Israel. His research and consulting includes work with the militaries of the United States of America, Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Israel, and South Africa.

Dr. Avolio is a fellow of the Academy of Management, American Psychological Society, American Psychological Association and the Gerontological Society. He is the former President of the Society for Human Resource Management Foundation and the Organizational Behavior Division of the Academy of Management.

Dr. Avolio has published 10 books and over a 125 articles on leadership and related areas. His books include Transformational and Charismatic Leadership: The Road Ahead (Elsevier Science, 2002), Full Leadership Development: Building the Vital Forces in Organizations (Sage Publications, 1999), and Developing Potential Across a Full Range of Leadership: Cases on Transactional and Transformational Leadership (Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, 2000). • Current projects include a 300k contract with the U.S. Military Academy at West Point to investigate ethical leadership development; a 730k contract to conduct a longitudinal investigation of leadership development with military officers, and a 186k contract with the VA to examine how taking ownership and developing leadership produce better healthcare results.

Great Leadership Book!

I'm using this book for one of my classes in my Master's of Arts in Leadership program. This book is written very well and has been very helpful to me in my class. I really appreciate what Avolio has to say and I enjoy reading this textbook for class. The principles that he brings up are very good and provide great food for thought.

This is a great book for anyone who's seeking to develop his leadership skills and the skills of his organization.

About the Author

Jeanne H. Ballantine (far right) is University Professor of Sociology (emeriti) at Wright State University, a state university of about 17,000 students in Ohio. She has also taught at several 4-year colleges, including an “alternative” college and a traditionally Black college, and at international programs in universities abroad. She has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a mission to introduce the uninitiated to the field and to help students see the usefulness and value in sociology. She has been active in the teaching movement, shaping curriculum, writing and presenting research on teaching, and offering workshops and consulting in regional, national, and international forums. She is a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and serves as a Departmental Resources Group consultant and evaluator. Jeanne has written several textbooks, all with the goal of reaching the student audience. As the original director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at Wright State University, she scoured the literature on student learning and served as a mentor to teachers in a wide variety of disciplines. Local, regional, and national organizations have honored her for her teaching and for her contributions to helping others become effective teachers. In 1986, the American Sociological Association’s Section on Undergraduate Education (now called the Section on Teaching and Learning in Sociology) recognized her with the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology. In 2004, she was honored by the American Sociological Association with its Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award. In 2010, the North Central Sociological Association awarded her the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.

Keith A. Roberts is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Hanover College, a private liberal arts college of about 1,100 students in Indiana. He has been teaching introductory sociology for more than 30 years with a passion for active learning strategies and a focus on “deep learning” by students that transforms the way they see the world. Prior to teaching at Hanover, he taught at a 2-year regional campus of a large university. He has been active in the teaching movement, writing on teaching and serving as a consultant to sociology departments across the country in his capacity as a member of the American Sociological Association Departmental Resources Group. He has written a very popular textbook in the sociology of religion, has coauthored a book on writing in the undergraduate curriculum, and for 22 years ran an annual workshop for high school sociology teachers. He has chaired the Selection Committee for the SAGE Innovations and Professional Development Awards since the program’s inception. He has been honored for his teaching and teaching-related work at local, state, regional, and national levels. The American Sociological Association’s Section on Teaching and Learning awarded him the Hans O. Mauksch Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching of Sociology in 2000. He was honored with the American Sociological Association’s Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award in 2010. In 2012, the North Central Sociological Association awarded Keith the J. Milton Yinger Award for Distinguished Career in Sociology.
