In many ways, the two fields of victimology and crime prevention have developed along parallel yet separate paths, and the literature on both has been scattered across disciplines as varied as sociology, law and criminology, public health and medicine, political science and public policy, economics, psychology and human services, and others. The Encyclopedia of Victimology and Crime Prevention brings together in one authoritative resource the dispersed information and knowledge on both victimology and crime prevention. With nearly 375 entries, this two-volume set moves victimology and crime prevention one step further into recognized scholarly fields whose research informs practice and whose practice informs research.

Key Features

  • Provides users with the most authoritative and comprehensive coverage available on victimology and crime prevention
  • Presents victimology and crime prevention as their own separate, justifiable disciplines rather than subfields within more established disciplines
  • Discusses the status of victims within the criminal justice system, as well as topics of deterring and preventing victimization in the first place and responding to victims' needs
  • Offers "anchor essays" written by leading scholars in their respective fields to provide starting points for investigating the more salient victimology and crime prevention topics

  • Business Prevention Actions
  • Civil Justice System
  • Correlates of Victimization

This is a welcome addition to any academic library. The availability in print and electronic formats provides students with convenient, easy access wherever they may be.

From Booklist
Although humans have experienced crime since the beginning of history, the ideas of crime prevention (stopping crime before it happens) and victimology (studying and aiding those who have suffered from crime) are relatively new concepts. Other reference works touch on these two fields, but this is the first encyclopedia to focus on victimization and prevention within the broader field of criminal justice. Entries cover a wide array of topics, including methods for preventing crime, the psychology and fear of crime, domestic violence, legislation, school and workplace violence, measurement scales and surveys, and theoretical issues in the field. Entries tend to be academic in nature, covering the theory and research behind each topic. Each entry has a bibliography for further reading. Appendixes provide lists of organizations and government agencies and a time line of historical developments in the field. A “Reader’s Guide” serves as a classified index, grouping the entries under 28 general topical headings. Although this is the first comprehensive reference work in these two areas of study and it fills a gap within the broader discipline of criminal justice, its academic nature will make it too specialized for many libraries. Recommended for academic libraries with criminology and criminal justice collections. Also available as an e-book. --David Tyckoson

Review
"....Features some 370 signed articles by leading authorities and practitioners on topics within the separate but complementary fields of victimology and crime prevention....This set will be useful for colleges and universities supporting programs in criminology or law, feminist studies, psychology and human services, political science and public policy, and sociology. It is also offered electronically throuogh SAGE Reference Online. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above." (J.J. Harrison CHOICE 2010-08-01)

"...The bulk of each entry discusses the crime within the context of its victims and its possible prevention. In addition, there are essays covering different theories of crime and violence as well as those focused on methodologies including a number of victimization scales and surveys.... In short, these two volumes provide readers a well-balanced and thorough reference that lends clarity to both disciplines while at the same time showing their complimentary nature. Undergraduate students are an obvious audience for this reference, and academic libraries would do well to consider it. However, it will also be a valuable resource for victim advocacy groups and crime prevention agencies." (Against the Grain 2011-01-01)

".... Plenty of current, accurate titles on both subjects exist, but this is the first work to link crime prevention and victimology overtly in one resource.... Bottom line Those studying law enforcement, the judicial system, victim's services, criminal justice, and social services as well as victims caught in the criminal justice system will find this helpful. Purchase where needed." (Laurie Selwyn Library Journal 2010-09-15)

Review
"A must-read for any administrator who employs coaches on their campus and for anyone who acts as a coach, teacher leader, facilitator, or mentor." (Candace Bixler, Educational Specialist 2008-06-11)

"It is imperative that districts make meaningful choices about the coaching model they invest their money and time in implementing. Without a broad base of knowledge, it is unlikely that coaching can have the greatest impact upon the teachers and students who need it the most." (Tiffany Wiencken, Instructional Coach Facilitator 2008-06-11)

"The book provides a useful overview of the different ways the concept of coaching applies to one common theme: the goal of improving student learning." (Dennis Wilson, Superintendent 2008-07-02)

Review
"The ultimate for those who promote teacher leadership and those who would be teacher leaders." (Roland S. Barth, Educational Consultant 2009-01-09)

"This seminal text left me nothing short of energized when I first picked it up almost ten years ago. Drawing from their continued experience developing and defining teacher leadership, Katzenmeyer and Moller bring additional transparency to a widely recognized concept that remains poorly understood. Filled with new surveys, tools, and suggestions for today’s teacher leader, the newest edition is simply a must-read for anyone driving meaningful change in the classrooms of our country." (Bill Ferriter, Senior Fellow 2009-01-09)

"Katzenmeyer and Moller usher in a new age of teacher leadership, an age of mutuality in learning and leading, broad-based participation, and shared responsibility. Their work is based on the powerful assumption that all of us―especially teachers―have the right, capacity, and responsibility to lead." (Linda Lambert, Professor Emeritus 2009-01-26)

It's okay
By young Haas
This was a required book for class. I don't think I wanted to spend money on it if I could have borrowed it from the library. It did challenge me to think holistically about what it means to be a professional teacher, but this type of book is something I will not read again. I think the writer definitely provides resourceful data and encouragement for the teachers and it is well-written.

It has been a pleasure to travel the country and hear first-hand from teachers the results they have achieved with "Academic Language! Academic Literacy!."  The resonating response has been that the 36 strategies make a huge difference--especially for ELL's and struggling readers.  When the principles and practices discussed in the book have been integrated throughout the core subject areas (social studies, math, science, and language arts), then student learning improves significantly. The drop-out rate will drop dramatically as students from low socio-economic backgrounds develop their academic language capacities.  The research shows that students who are ELL's need explicit intervention support in academic language.  Instructional Coaches and Administrators who develop a systematic interventions for their students will see increases in learning results.  Whether it has been Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, Calgary, Seattle, Waco, Portland, or Des Moines, the achievement in student learning has been impressive.  I look forward to hearing how these practical and proven strategies work for your students.

From the Inside Flap
"When used effectively in schools, academic language provides everyone a much clearer focus, so we, as teachers, communicate better, our students learn better, and our schools achieve better results."
