Worthless Book

I know that my title may be harsh, but let me explain. First of all, I never really had to take statistic in undergraduate, so my familiarity is none. I am working on my doctorate and this was the book that was used. First of all, it needs updated badly. There is either information missing, wrong screen shots, or miscalculations. For someone that has never used SPSS or knows much about statistics, this book is just terrible. I think with some updates it could be a it more useful then it was for me.

About the Author
Deanna L. Fassett is Department Chair and professor of communication pedagogy at San José State University where she has, since 2002, mentored her department’s graduate student instructors.  She is the author and editor of three other books:  Coordinating the Communication Course:  A Guidebook, Critical Communication Pedagogy, The SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction, and Communication: A Critical/Cultural Introduction, Second Edition. Her published research has appeared in a broad array of communication studies journals, including Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

John T. Warren (Late) was professor of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His major research and teaching centered in Communication Pedagogy, Performance Studies, and Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies. He was the author of numerous books including Performing Purity: Whiteness, Pedagogy and the Reconstitution of Power; Casting Gender: Women and Performance in Intercultural Contexts; Critical Communication Pedagogy; and the SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction. He also authored articles for several education and communication studies journals, including Educational Theory, Communication Education, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

ALL college instructors need to read this book. It's written to be understood and applied for maximum communication competence in the higher education classroom. The recommendations and strategies for improving communication in the classroom are fairly intuitive; however, many instructors are not called upon to consider these constructs prior to entering the classroom. Discipline expertise is not enough. Instructors must garner and use good classroom communication skills.

About the Author
Wendy Griswold has a background in both social science and the humanities. She received her doctorate in sociology from Harvard University in 1980 and has a master’s degree in English from Duke University. She taught at the University of Chicago from 1981 to 1997, She is the Bergen Evans Professor in the Humanities and Professor of Sociology at Northwestern University. She has been associate editor and book review editor of the American Journal of Sociology and has been on the editorial boards of Contexts, Poetics, and Acta Sociologica. She is on the Advisory Board for the Centro per lo Studio della Moda e della Produzione Culturale, Università Cattolica del Sarcro Cuore, Milan. She has received research support from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, support from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Science American Council of Learned Societies, the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, and the European University Institute in Florence. Her research on culture has been international in scope. Her most recent book is Regionalism and the Reading Class (2008); she is currently completing a book on the WPA Federal Writers’ Project and its impact on American culture. Bearing Witness: Readers, Writers, and the Novel in Nigeria (2000), won the “Best Book” award for the Sociology of Culture section of the American Sociological Association. Her first book was on the English theater (Renaissance Revivals: City Comedy and Revenge Tragedy in the London Theatre 1576–1980 [1986]). In addition, she co-edited a book on the sociology of literature (Literature and Social Practice [1989]) and has written on the sociology of religion, specifically on conflict within churches. Her current research explores cultural regionalism; she is also studying the relationship between the Internet and reading in Africa. She has written an influential paper on sociological methods for cultural analysis (“A Methodological Framework for the Sociology of Culture,” Sociological Methodology 17 [1987]:1–35); much of her methodological thinking is incorporated in the present book.

Interesting approach, but not for beginning sociologists

Wendy Griswold's "Culture and Societies in a Changing World" provides serious students of sociology with an elegant model -- the "cultural diamond" -- with which to approach the analysis of cultures and societies. This model is comprised of four vertices: the social world (or context), the cultural object (the item or ritual under examination), the creator of the object, and the receiver of the object. In the first four chapters, Griswold takes the reader through various ways of understanding each vertex, as well as the interplay between each; the final three chapters examine social problems, organizational cultures, and the wired world, as each relates in different ways to cultures.

This short book (175 pages) offers the reader numerous examples and analytical tools in the search for cultural meaning within society. Griswold draws on writings and studies from both classical authors (e.g., Marx, Durkheim, Geertz) and more contemporary researchers. Her writing is at times almost too compact and efficient for my taste; a bit more elaboration on each point would have clarified some points -- hence my initial caveat that this book may not be for novices. However, this observation should be taken only as a personal preference, since the book provides solid theoretical underpinnings and examples that are right up to the moment (most evident in her frequent references to current events in the Middle East). Perhaps the closing chapter is the best in terms of tying cultures and societies together: "Cultures in a Wired World" is the most engaging and intriguing chapter as it provokes some serious thought about the Internet and its impact on the communities to which we belong.

About the Author
Charles Wankel is Professor of Management at St. John's University, New York. He holds a doctorate from New York University, where he was admitted to the Beta Gamma Sigma national honor society for business disciplines. Columbia University's American Assembly identified him as one of the nation's top experts on Total Quality Management. He received the Outstanding Service in Management Education & Development Award at both the 2004 and 2005 meetings of the Academy of Management (AOM). AOM also presented its Best Paper in Management Education Award to him in 1991, and he has been selected to serve as an officer of AOM divisions every year for more than a decade. Along with Robert DeFillippi, he has been editing a multi-volume series for AOM on management education issues: the Research in Management Education & Development Series. Wankel is the leading founder and director of scholarly virtual communities for management professors, currently directing more than seven listservs with thousands of participants in more than 70 nations. (A Google search for "Charles Wankel" will provide you with an awareness of the scope of his online prominence.) An introduction for students and entry-level professionals to definitions, issues and concepts in global/international business

Wankel of St. John's University, New York offers readers this four-volume set as a way to introduce them to definitions and discussions of key business topics as they relate to the global business environment. I counted about 1,014 entries by almost 500 different contributors -- about 60% affiliated with American universities and the other 40% being mostly faculty affiliated mostly with universities throughout the world.

Entries are categorized under twenty-two major themes, typically run one to three pages, and often suggest additional "See Also" references and a brief list of additional sources for readers to consult. The volumes themselves are attractively designed, nicely bound and the content is presented in an easily read font and attractive layout. While I would have preferred seeing more photographs, illustrations, tables and graphs of broad economic terms, these concerns are offset somewhat by the lengthy glossary and statistical appendix that precedes the cumulative index at the end of the fourth volume.

In this age of complexity in every aspect of today's business world one cannot help but wonder if a mere four-volume encyclopedia can really cover the fields that make up "Business" as a discipline. Think about it, there's Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Law, never mind the associated fields such as Management Information Systems, Operations Research, Industrial Psychology, etc. Then there's the need for information on "How to Do Business in [name the country]," biographical sketches of prominent CEO's, description of significant economic and business events, and so forth. Because each business discipline could easily fill a four-volume set alone, and these other areas that need to be covered are just as vitally important -- the reality is that a comparison of the content of this product with the title -- indicates that the publisher has, to some extent, "over-promised and under-delivered." That may sound harsh, and is not intended to belittle the efforts of the editor and publisher -- that is, it's not to say that this set is not a worthy effort -- it is. Indeed, in comparison to the other products out there, while it will not replace the six-volume International Encyclopedia of Business and Management, 2nd. (Thomson Learning, 2001, $1,499), it is more comprehensive and a better purchase decision than buying the two-volume Encyclopedia of Business and Finance 2nd (MacMillan Reference USA, 2006. $385).

My hat is off to Dr. Wankel for taking on a project like this -- coordinating the progress and editing the content to make sure contributions are uniform and arrive in a timely manner for 500 contributors -- is, more often than not, a thankless, difficult ordeal for the editor. He is to be commended. But, it is time for one of the top business publishers to come up with the "Encyclopedia of Business" that the marketplace needs. Such a product would: combine the content of the best textbooks by the most noted authors of each discipline; add content on doing business in specific countries in a manner seen in the "Doing Business in [Country]" guides published by many of the "Big-10" accounting firms along with content from Europa Yearbook and the CIA Factbook; and, would offer historical, biographical and economic articles in the quality and style seen in the Wall Street Journal and other principal business periodicals such as Forbes, Fortune, Business Week, etc. all written by business faculty from the top business schools in America and the world.

In the meantime, librarians for both public and academic library collections will find this set helpful for general business questions.

About the Author

Dr. Allan A. Glatthorn (deceased) was a Distinguished Research Professor of Education (Emeritus) at East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina.

Jerry M. Jailall recently served as the state coordinator for the federal Comprehensive School Reform program and as a Title 1 Consultant at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. He has worked with 172 elementary, middle, and high schools implementing school reform initiatives. He previously coordinated the NC School Improvement Grants program in 107 school districts under the standards-based GOALS 2000 federal initiative. He has over 25 years of K-12 experience in public education spanning Guyana, the Bahamas, and the US. He is a former lecturer at the University of Guyana. He obtained his doctorate in education from East Carolina University.

I am scheduled to interview for an Instructional Coach position. However, this book is a guide for ANYONE that will work/assist with a school curriculum. It goes through the legal stuff and state mandated requirements concerning curriculum. Additionally, the book leads the leader on how to align the curriculum on a school level (public/charter/private). I would recommend this book for novices as well as 'experts'. It helps to provide a refresher for those experienced with aligning State standards and building curriculum/pacing guides.

It's an easy read and you can start in the area where you have the most concern. Bring a highliter b/c you'll really need it!

About the Author
Barbara L. McCombs directs the Human Motivation, Learning, and Development Center at the University of Denver. The center focuses on the professional development of educators, personal and organizational change, systemic educational reform, and school violence prevention. McCombs' current research is directed at new leadership models for redesigning outdated views of schooling and learning. This research has led to her international and national recognition in areas that include transformational teacher development approaches, motivating hard-to-reach students, and the use of technology as a primary tool for empowering youth and facilitating relevant learning. The author has begun a series of books published by Corwin Press. Learner-Centered Classroom Practices and Assessments: Maximizing Student Motivation, Learning, and Achievement (2006) was co-authored with Lynda Miller and written for teachers.Her second book in the series, written for school administrators and other school leaders, was also co-authored with Lynda Miller and is titled A School Leader's Guide to Creating Learner-Centered Education: From Complexity to Simplicity (2008).McCombs is the primary author of Learner-Centered Psychological Principles (LCPs): Guidelines for School Redesign and Reform. She has developed research-validated learner-centered models of teaching and learning based on the LCPs. Through collaborations with colleagues at the University of Bristol in England, she developed an online version of her Assessment of Learner-Centered Practices (ALCP) teacher and student surveys. These surveys have been validated with over 35,000 students and their teachers in Grades K-3, 4-8, 9-12, and college level. The ALCP surveys are being used in numerous national and international K-12 schools as well as colleges.
