William N. Bender began his career by teaching eighth- and ninth-grade students in the public schools. He worked in higher education for 28 years and published over 60 research articles and 24 books in education. He specializes in instructional strategies for all students and is recognized as a national leader on instructional tactics, response to intervention, and differentiated instruction. Dr. Bender believes his job is to inform audiences across the nation of innovative, up to date information, based on current applied research. Dr. Bender received his Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of North Carolina and currently consults with schools and districts in the United States and Canada.

Martha J. Larkin taught public school students in general education and special education at the elementary, middle, and secondary levels for several years before beginning a career in higher education. She has authored and coauthored 17 journal articles, 10 book and monograph chapters, and 5 research reports and commissioned papers in education and special education. She specializes in instructional strategies, particularly for students with learning disabilities. Her specific teaching and research interests include scaffolded instruction, content enhancement, learning strategies, graphic organizers, and grading rubrics. She especially enjoys pursuing these interests in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. She earned her PhD from the University of Alabama in 1999.

About the Author

Ronald H. Humphrey is a professor in the Department of Management at Virginia Commonwealth University. His research interests include leadership, entrepreneurship, customer service, emotions in the workplace, empathy, emotional labor, emotional intelligence, person perception, identity theory, labeling theory, attribution theory, collective efficacy, careers, project management, assessment centers, job characteristics, and other topics. He is on the editorial board of The Leadership Quarterly, where he edited a special issue on emotions and leadership. Professor Humphrey was one of the founding members of the Network of Leadership Scholars (also known as LDRNET) and was co-program chair for the Professional Development Workshops organized by the Network at Academy of Management Conferences. He has published in a range of journals, including the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, American Sociological Review, Research in Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, Social Psychology Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Relations, and Organization Science.

Once you start reading "Effective Leadership: Theory, Cases, and Applications", you won't want to put it down, what you WILL want to do is immediately start applying what you learn! Dr. Humphrey has written a book which is a pleasure to read as it is interesting, entertaining, relevant, and well written.

The information Dr. Humphrey provides is immediately useful; professionally and personally. Best of all, it's all based on real people, events, and NUMEROUS evidence backed research and studies; some of which were conducted by Dr. Humphrey and/or his colleagues.

The people and events Humphrey writes about are spectacular examples which drive home Humphrey's points and reinforces learning; as it allows the reader to connect these real-life examples to theories and the numerous research and studies Humphrey cites.

I have 30+ years of professional work experience in both the public and private sector, and this is one of the best, most relevant and useful books I've ever read. I did not dread reading this textbook; and since I have several degrees I've had to read LOADS of them! The fact that this book is based on real people, events, research and studies provides the concrete proof I need to take this book to heart, and I plan to read this book over and over again, use it as a reference, and apply what I've learned. I'm even going to have my teenage daughter read this book, as I believe it provides essential information which will enrich her life.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants solid, evidence based practical tips and information to help them learn to be good leaders, become better leaders;-or just be a better person. Thank you Dr. Humphrey!

This is a great book for both, leaders and followers.

I was lucky for being one of Dr.Humphrey students in VCU. The effective leadership book is one of the most useful books I ever read. It is really easy to read and understand specially for me because english is my 3rd language! Every single subject in this book is supported by research and studies, those studies are really helpful and easy to implement. Also, there are many interesting real time worldwide cases about leaders, those cases inspired my view about my business and employees. I highly recommend reading the Effective Leadership book for everyone, whether a leader or a follower.

I will be implementing some of the techniques in this book for my business, and I will update this review accordingly.

About the Author
Mudita Rastogi, Ph.D., LMFT, is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the American School of Professional Psychology, Argosy University in Schaumburg, Illinois. She obtained her Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Texas Tech University. Additionally she has earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in Psychology from University of Delhi and University of Bombay, India.

Dr. Rastogi has published in the areas of family and couple therapy, cross-cultural and gender issues and South Asian families, and is editor of the book Voices of Color: First-Person Accounts of Ethnic Minoriity Therapists (2005, Sage). She is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.

Dr. Rastogi has over fifteen years of clinical experience in both India and the United States with a highly diverse client population, and is in private practice in Arlington Heights, Illinois as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Her clinical interests include couples, families, adolescents, cultural and gender issues, domestic violence and trauma. She frequently presents workshops nationally and internationally and also conducts training and consultation in the area of leadership.

Additionally, Dr. Rastogi maintains an interest in volunteering and partnering with grassroots, not-for-profit organizations. She is an AAMFT Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor, and a founding member of the Indian Association for Family Therapy.


Volker Thomas, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy in the Department of Child Development and Family Studies at Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. in Family Social Science with a Specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Minnesota and an MSW from the University of Kassel, Germany.

Since 1993 Dr. Thomas is on the faculty of the COAMFTE accredited doctoral MFT program at Purdue University and served as its director from 1999-2003. Dr. Thomas has been on the editorial boards of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy, The Family Journal, and Counseling and Values. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the AFTA Newsletter from 1998-2002. His research interests include family assessment, family therapy with economically disadvantaged families, gender and multicultural perspectives in family therapy, family therapy with children, ethical and professional issues, supervision in family therapy training.

Among his many publications are recent books: Cierpka, M., Thomas, V., & Sprenkle, D. H. (Eds.) (2005). Family assessment: Integrating Multiple Perspectives. Kirkland, WA: Hogrefe. Thomas, V., Karis, T., & Wetchler, J. (Eds.) (2003). Clinical Issues With Interracial Couples: Theory and Research. New York: Haworth Press. Additionally, Dr. Thomas has published over 60 refereed journal articles and book chapters, and has extensive experience as presenter at national and international conferences.

Dr. Thomas is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Indiana and has a small private practice in West Lafayette. He is a Clinical Member and Approved Supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT).

a book for experts and students alike

As a clinical psychologist, I found this book to be highly engaging. The separate chapters are all written by clinicians who work with culturally diverse couples. There are useful links to websites, movies, and other materials. I used this book to help write a course on gender, and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to work with couples in an effective way. I learned a lot about specific issues covering the many aspects of identity that form cultural context.

Excellent resource!

This book has really provided a fresh perspective on couple dynamics in mutlicultural therapy. With the "melting pot" of cultures continually growing in diversity, this book is a must read for any clinician or student who is sincerely invested in their own insight and understanding of culture (your own or others). The book is filled with rich examples, exercises, reflections, and resources!!

Multicural Therapy

I hope that I am not biased but one of the authors (Thomas) and the person who has written the forward are both instructors at the school where i attended undergrad school (Purdue University) THis book seems to be well written from the perspective of marganilized populations in therapy with White clinicians. The authors seem to be particulary adept about pointing out the importance of the impact of white entitlement/power in society and the luggage the phrase brings along with it.

If you are going to acknowledge how a terrorist organization uses community projects to improve their image, at least acknowledge that they did some things that are unethical and immoral (The Black Panthers were used as examples frequently, among others. They were firstly, a racist terrorist organization {The KKK is a perfect pair but was never cited in this book positively}, and only used community projects to gain support among those easily influenced).
Destroying property of innocent people is also terrorism (throwing buckets of paint on city streets so that cars would drive through it, etc). But these were only highlighted positively. Highly biased.

About the Author

Steven Katz is a director with the research and evaluation firm Aporia Consulting Ltd. and a permanent faculty member in Human Development and Applied Psychology at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. He is an associate member of the School of Graduate Studies and is the coordinator of the Psychology of Learning and Development initial teacher education program component.

Katz has a doctorate in human development and applied psychology, with a specialization in applied cognitive science. His areas of expertise include cognition and learning, teacher education, networked learning communities, and the design of data-driven systems for organizational accountability, planning, and improvement. He has received the Governor General's medal for excellence in his field, and has been involved in research and evaluation, professional development, and consulting with a host of educational organizations around the world.

Lorna M. Earl is a director of Aporia Consulting Ltd. and a retired associate professor from the Department of Theory and Policy Studies at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. She was the first director of assessment for the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office, and she as been a researcher and research director in school districts for over 20 years.

Throughout her career, Earl has concentrated her efforts on policy and program evaluations as a vehicle to enhance learning for pupils and for organizations. She has done extensive work in the areas of literacy and the middle years, but has concentrated her efforts on issues related to evaluation of large-scale reform and assessment (large-scale and classroom) in many venues around the world. She has worked extensively in schools and school boards, and has been involved in consultation, research, and staff development with teachers' organizations, ministries of education, school districts, and charitable foundations. Earl holds a doctorate in epidemiology and biostatistics, as well as degrees in education and psychology.

Sonia Ben Jaafar is a research associate at Aporia Consulting Ltd. She works internationally to support policy and program development and implementation through applied research and evaluation. Her areas of expertise include assessment, accountability, educational reform, policy and program development, and comparative studies.

Ben Jaafar graduated from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto with a PhD in theory and policy studies. She also holds an MA in curriculum, teaching, and learning; a BEd specialized in science education; and a BSc in biochemistry.

Errors, errors and more errors

This book is riddled with mistakes. I am currently involved in teaching an introductory level course on substance use with this as the assigned text (I did not select the textbook). I've discovered multiple errors in nearly ever chapter. In addition, there are instances where the writing style is extremely confusing. I would not recommend this text in its current form for anyone.

About the Author
Carolyn Chapman is an international educational consultant, author, and teacher who has taught in kindergarten to college classrooms. Her interactive, hands-on professional development training sessions challenge educators to use strategies that ensure success for learners of all ages. Chapman has written many books about differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, multiple assessments, and the brain-compatible classroom. She is coauthor with Gayle Gregory of the landmark Corwin Press book Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn't Fit All.

Rita King has more than 20 years of teacher training experience and administrative experience as principal and director of Middle Tennessee State University's teacher training program in the laboratory school. Most recently, she was an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the university. She now consults internationally in the areas of multiple intelligences, practical applications of brain-based research, differentiated learning, reading and writing strategies, mathematics instruction, creating effective learning environments, and strategies for test success. She is the coauthor of Differentiated Instructional Strategies for Reading in the Content Areas, Differentiated Instructional Strategies for Writing in the Content Areas, and Differentiated Assessment Strategies: One Tool Doesn't Fit All.

I was looking for more of 'Here's how it worked in this classroom'

There are many strategies for variations of the same work in this book, like different vocabulary activities or some good reading strategies minilessons. I wanted more of a structure for a classroom - like take the top 10% from the pretest and go this route with them, then with the next group ... But that was not the layout of this book.
This book would be great for a content area teacher that has not taken an indepth reading (for information or in the content area) class at some point in their career. Possibly a beginning teacher in a secondary content area would benefit most from this.
