About the Author
Dr. Andy Johnson was a 1976 graduate of Grantsburg High School in Grantsburg, Wisconsin.  He attended the University of Wisconsin, River Falls where he graduated with a B.S. degree in Music and Speech-Communication.  After earning elementary teaching licensure, he taught 2nd grade in River Falls, Wisconsin from 1983-1986.   He went on to teach in elementary schools in the Twin Cities area and also spent three years working in the Grantsburg School District as A 5th grade teacher and the Gifted Education Coordinator.

He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Literacy Education in 1997.  He is currently working at Minnesota State University, Mankato as a professor of literacy in the Department of Special Education where he specializes in literacy instruction for students with reading difficulties.  He is the author of 10 books and numerous academic articles related to literacy, learning, teacher development, and the human condition. 

He lives in North Mankato with his wife, Dr. Nancy Fitzsimons and his dogs Mickey and Emmet.

Wow! Practical and interesting.

This book provides a lot of practical activities for making learning active and interesting. I was able to use these in my 5th grade classroom. I've been teaching for 10 years and this book gave me a whole new view on teaching social studies. This book will be useful for beginning teachers as well as for veteran teachers. It shows how social studies can move from a boring subject where you memorize state capitals, to a dynamic, student-centered subject. This book gives good background information as well as teacher ideas. Why aren't more academic books written like this?

Better Than I Anticipated

I was required to purchase this book for a social studies methods class. It is chock full of practical lesson ideas as well as explaining the underpinnings for presenting lessons in these ways. Very helpful to a preservice teacher or a teacher that is interested in new ideas for social studies lessons.

About the Author
Thomas R. Guskey, Ph.D., is Professor of Educational Psychology in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. A graduate of the University of Chicago, he began his career in education as a middle school teacher, served as an administrator in Chicago Public Schools, and was the first Director of the Center for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning, a national educational research center. He is the author/editor of 18 books and over 200 articles published in prominent research journals as well as Educational Leadership, Kappan, and School Administrator. Dr. Guskey served on the Policy Research Team of the National Commission on Teaching & America’s Future, on the Task Force to develop the National Standards for Staff Development, and recently was named a Fellow in the American Educational Research Association, which also honored him in 2006 for his outstanding contribution relating research to practice. His most recent books include Developing Standards-Based Report Cards (2010), Practical Solutions for Serious Problems in Standards-Based Grading (Ed.) (2009), The Principal as Assessment Leader (Ed.) (2009), The Teacher as Assessment Leader (Ed.) (2009), and Benjamin S. Bloom: Portraits of an Educator (Ed.) (2006).

About the Author
Kathleen M. Galotti holds a B.A. in psychology and economics from Wellesley College, as well as an M.A. and a Ph.D. in psychology and an M.S.E. in computer and information sciences from the University of Pennsylvania. At Carleton College she holds the title Professor and Director of Cognitive Science, an interdisciplinary program, which she helped establish in 1989. She also is a former department chair of Psychology. She teaches courses in cognitive and developmental psychology and cognitive science, and has also taught courses in statistics and introductory psychology. Dr. Galotti is the author or coauthor of dozens of peer-reviewed studies in cognitive and developmental psychology. Her research centers on the development of reasoning and decision-making skills from the preschool period through adulthood and on the styles with which adolescents and adults plan for the future, make important life commitments, and learn new information. Her research has been funded through the National Science Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. She is the author of Making Decisions That Matter: How People Face Important Life Choices (Erlbaum, 2002), as well as a textbook, Cognitive Development: Infancy Through Adolescence (SAGE, 2011).

About the Author

Lane Narvaez is a coauthor of the book The Differentiated School: Making Revolutionary Changes in Teaching and Learning. She has been the principal at Conway Elementary in the Ladue School District, St. Louis, Missouri, for the past 14 years. She has served as an administrator at the elementary, middle, high school, and district levels. Lane has worked in the public school systems of New York, Arizona, and Missouri and has 28 years of teaching/administrative experience. She has worked in at-risk as well as affluent school communities. Degrees include a bachelor of arts from Hunter College (New York), a masters in reading from Manhattan College (New York), and a doctorate in reading from Arizona State University. Narvaez’s research interests include mentoring the beginning teacher, curriculum, and instruction and schoolwide differentiation. She has presented at the following national conferences: ATE(Association of Teacher Educators), AERA (American Educational Research Association), and ASCD (Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development).

She has also presented at the Summer Institute of Academic Diversity at the University of Virginia and the Oxford Round Table in Oxford, England, on her work involving schoolwide differentiation. For the past four years she has worked with Henry County School district in Virginia to help implement differentiation throughout the schools in the district. She has served as a coach in differentiation for schools in Virginia and California, working with teachers and administrators as they implement differentiation in their schools.



Kay Brimijoin is currently associate professor and chair of the Education Department at Sweet Briar College in central Virginia, where she helped launch a master’s program in differentiated curriculum and instruction and teaches courses on curriculum and instruction, assessment, literacy development, and student teaching. After 20 years of K-12 classroom teaching experience and school administration, Brimijoin completed her PhD in educational psychology with concentrations in gifted education and curriculum and instruction at the University of Virginia. She has received awards on curriculum design, research and evaluation, and distinguished dissertation work from the National Association for Gifted Children. She co-authored The Differentiated School in 2008 (ASCD) and a unit in Differentiation in Practice: Grades 9-12 in 2005 (ASCD). Brimijoin has authored numerous articles and co-authored a 2003 review of the literature supporting differentiation. From 2000-2006 Brimijoin was a member of the ASCD Differentiation Faculty Cadre and continues to consult with schools across the country on differentiation, curriculum design, gifted education, and teacher education.

Nothing new here!

I had heard good things about this book, but I was disappointed. Gootman's book is very similar to dozens of others out there. She repeats all the well-known DOs and DON'Ts of teaching. While I found myself agreeing with most of what she said, I didn't find many meaningful suggestions of ways to improve my discipline in the classroom. Suggestions such as using I messages, avoiding embarrassing students, and creating a classroom community are not new! I think most teachers are already doing many of the DO's and avoiding many of the DON'Ts, and this book, like many others, did NOT offer a usable plan to change the climate of the classroom. Gootman, like many other authors and speakers who no longer teach full time, suggests that if teachers are caring and plan interesting lessons, problems will be few. I wish that were true. I was looking for concrete solutions to specific behaviors I see time and time again. Gootman's book offered few answers.

Good for the UNcaring teacher.

If you are a caring teacher, then despite the title, this book is not for you. You will not find anything new or profound here. I agree with a previous review--this book offers no concrete advice and is not based on a realistic view of the behaviors exhibited in many public schools. The examples of misbehavior provided in the book are incredibly tame compared to what I experience on a daily basis.
This book might be good for someone who has been told by a qualified mentor the s/he has not connected with the students or is too harsh.

Text book for College

I had to use this book for a college course and thought it was the easiest book to read and understand. I have even used it for the basis of a day care continuing education conference. Great book! Wonderfully written. Use it for problem solving in your classroom and implementing classroom meetings. It is great resource FOR TEACHERS to use to problem solve the behavior issues THEY have with children. Not just for teachers to teach students how to figure out problems. There is one section about figuring out the function of behaviors, which most teachers forget when dealing with challenging children.

About the Author
Abigail Norfleet James taught for many years in single-sex schools and consults on the subject of gendered teaching to school systems, colleges, and universities. Her area of expertise is developmental and educational psychology as applied to the gendered classroom. Prior to obtaining her doctorate from the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education, she taught general science, biology, and psychology in both boys’ and girls’ schools.

Her previous publications include reports of research comparing the educational attitudes of male graduates of coed schools and single-sex schools, research describing the effects of gendered basic skills instruction, and a report of academic achievement of students in single gender programs. In addition, she has written on differentiated instruction at the elementary school level. She has presented workshops and papers at many educational conferences and works with teachers and parent groups in interpreting the world of gendered education.

Her professional affiliations include the American Educational Research Association, the American Psychological Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Coalition of Schools Educating Boys of Color, the Gender and Education Association, the International Boys’ Schools Coalition, and the National Association for Single-Sex Public Education (Advisory Board Member).

About the Author

Robin L. Nabi (PhD, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, 1998) is an associate professor of communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research interests focus on discrete emotions’ influence on message processing and decision making in response to media messages that concern health or social issues. Her work has appeared in numerous communication journals, and she has served on several editorial boards, as the chair of the Mass Communication Division of the International Communication Association, and as a co-editor of Media Psychology.



Mary Beth Oliver (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Madison, 1991) is a professor in and co-director of the Media Effects Research Lab in the College of Communications at Penn State University. Her research and teaching focus on media effects, with an emphasis on media entertainment, media and emotion, and media and social cognition. She was a Fulbright Research Scholar in New Zealand and served as Chair of the Mass Communication Division of the National Communication Association. She is co-editor with Jennings Bryant on Media Effects, Advances in Theory and Research (3rd ed.), and is former co-editor of Media Psychology, former associate editor of the Journal of Communication and Communication Theory, and former book-review editor for the Journal of Communication.

Textbook is adequate. Student Renters: Beware of apex_media book rental fulfillment - Unscrupulous company!

The SAGE Handbook of Media Processes and Effects textbook is an adequate overview of mass media theory and effects research. The various clusters and camps of effects paradigm and social science dispositions are explicated clearly therein. The book is a bit behind the curve with regard to the convergence of recent neuro-physiological research into media effects on individuals and society happening now, but this has to do with the difficulty of merging the pseudo-science of cognitive studies with the hard science of biology. Much of this new research is making the old discipline of communication inquiry via the study of cognitive processes almost entirely obsolete. Media effects research on brain biology is revolutionizing our understanding of the detriments of adverse media. But for the condensed 3 week course I was in, this book was handy.

However, be very cautious of apex-media and their textbook rental practices. They sent me a book that was in terrible condition. The spine was broken and the hardcover was barely hanging on. I immediately left seller feedback of this rental and the company - apex-media - in my AMAZON acct. That note saved me serious money. When my short course was over I promptly shipped the book back, then about a week later I received notice that the rental was rejected and my credit card was charged a stunning $234. I was livid. I called AMAZON and provided the seller feedback note on the rental and the date it was written, demonstrating my concern with the "not as described" condition of the text. I couldn't afford to ship the book back and wait for a replacement due to the condensed nature of the course, so was forced to make do. Thankfully, I have an amazing relationship and history of mutual trust with AMAZON, so they instated a full refund. Apex-media is a thoughtless, unscrupulous supplier. Cover yourself with feedback notes! Call AMAZON immediately if Apex-media sends you a garbage-ready textbook!

I highly recommend this book to students and scholars alike. The chapters are understandable yet "meaty"--they contain lots of useful information and citations. The breadth of topics addressed by this handbook is also wonderful.

About the Author

Review of Kay Burke's How to Assess Authentic Learning

Kay Burke provides an honest and accessible rendition of the reality of today's educational school system in "How to Assess Authentic Learning." The text is meant to be utilized as a tool for teachers to assist them in expanding their collection of assessment strategies in order to support students meet, and hopefully, exceed the standards. Burke reviews an array of teaching methods and assessment tools and how they should be used for optimal student success. She breaks down how to use assessment effectively to propel instruction and student learning and achievement. The layout of the book is thoughtful, purposeful, and well organized. My favorite part of the book is the "On Your Own" and "Reflection" sections at the end of each chapter. Burke gives the reader an opportunity to apply what they have read in the text to their own practice and then further reflect upon what they learned (through their reading and prompted inquiry-based learning).

I am currently working towards a master's in teaching and am considered to be a novice in this field. I have not read many learning assessment texts and do not have a wealth of information on the subject. However, from my fresh eyes and unique perspective, I believe Burke's book, "How to Assess Authentic Learning," would be useful to anyone in the field of education based on the detail and care she takes to explain each of the highlighted teaching methods and learning assessment strategies. Burke has extensively researched the subject and articulated her findings and beliefs based on that research and her own experiences as an educator. I highly recommend this book to anyone in the field of education who is dedicated to improving the current educational system and student success.
