About the Author

Margo Gottlieb, Ph.D., is Co-founder and Lead Developer for WIDA at the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin- Madison and Director, Assessment and Evaluation, for the Illinois Resource Center. She has spearheaded the crafting of language development standards and has designed assessments, curricular frameworks, and instructional assessment systems for language learners. Starting her career as an inner city ESL and bilingual teacher in Chicago, she has since worked with thousands of educators to share in professional learning with states, school districts, publishers, governments, universities, and organizations. Margo has servied on numerous national and state expert panels, advisory boards, and committees. Throughout the years Margo has traveled extensively to present in American Samoa, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, the Commonweath of the Northern Mariana Islands, Finland, Guam, Italy, Jakarta, Mexico, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Taipei, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom as well as close to home across the United States.

Margo's publications span over 60 articles, technical reports, monographs, chapters, and encyclopedia entries. Her most recent books include: Academic Language in Diverse Classrooms: Definitions and Contexts (with G. About the Author

Dr. Kimberly A. Gordon Biddle has a double BA in psychology and music from the University of Redlands. She also has an EdS in program evaluation and a PhD in child and adolescent development from the Stanford University School of Education. She taught in various preschools as an assistant teacher as she worked while completing her years of higher education. She has more than 20 years’ experience as a college professor and has numerous accomplishments and awards, including early childhood grants from First 5 Sacramento County. In terms of awards, she was an American Psychological Association MFP Fellow in graduate school and won her college’s Outstanding Teaching Award at Sacramento State. She has written more than 15 publications and presented at more than 40 conferences. Some of her publications have appeared in the Early Childhood Education Journal and the eJournal of Education Policy. Conference presentations have been at the American Educational Research Association and the Head Start National Research Conference. Currently, she is a professor of child development at California State University, Sacramento, where she prepares students to teach young children.



Dr. Ana Garcia-Nevarez is the chair of the undergraduate studies division in the College of Education and a professor at California State University, Sacramento. She received a BA in psychology and child development from California State University, Northridge, and an MA in school psychology and a PhD in curriculum and instruction (emphasis in elementary education) from Arizona State University. She was a Regents’ graduate academic scholar at Arizona State University. She has taught at California State University, Sacramento, since 2001. She has taught courses in cross-cultural child development, language and literacy development, curriculum and instruction, and research methods. Her research interest includes evaluating preservice teachers’ attitudes toward diversity, civic engagement, and career development. Her research agenda has allowed her to be an active member in the preschool and elementary school community. Dr. Garcia-Nevarez is the author of several research articles and monographs. She regularly presents at national and international conferences.



Dr. Wanda Roundtree Henderson has been intimately involved in the design, implementation, execution, and evaluation of early childhood and family support programs within the New York City metropolitan area, in California, and throughout the country for approximately 30 years. In her current position as interim director of child development at the Sacramento City Unified School District, Dr. Roundtree Henderson provides fiduciary and programmatic oversight for the department, which serves approximately 3,000 children, from birth to age 12 years, and their families. Dr. Roundtree Henderson is a part-time adjunct lecturer at California State University, Sacramento, in the Department of Child Development. She has also served as a consultant/trainer and has accessed many educational platforms, forums, and instititions of higher education as a speaker and lecturer in the disciplines of early childhood education, psychology, and developmental psychology. Dr. Henderson is the recipient of many awards and recognitions for her scholastic achievements and work in the fields of early childhood education and family support. Dr. Henderson holds a BA in psychology and education from Hunter College of the City University of New York. She also holds a master’s degree in developmental psychology, a master’s of education, and a doctorate in early childhood education/curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York City. She is married to Dr. Darryl Henderson, clinical psychologist and director of the Center for Counseling and Diagnostic Services at California State University, Sacramento.



Dr. Alicia Valero-Kerrick is a lecturer of child development at California State University, Sacramento. She received her PhD in education from the University of California, Davis. She also holds a double BA in psychology and Chicano studies from the University of California, Davis. Previously, she worked as a cohort instructor in the Early Development, Care and Education program at California State University, Sacramento. She also has worked as a bilingual school psychologist, an evaluation coordinator, a training coordinator, and a private educational consultant. Dr. Valero-Kerrick has experience with staff development and training for early childhood education teachers working with infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners.

This book was very enjoyable to read as a student. Everything is clearly explained, and that makes it so much easier to read. There are also a lot of personal stories included that give great insight into each chapter.

This book about early childhood education was an amazing read! Not only was it easy to follow, but very educational and practical. Dr. Biddle and her associates describe school policies and also provide relatable examples. This book is not only for child development students, but also for teachers or anyone interested in early childhood development.

About the Author

Laura E. Levine received her Ph.D. in developmental and clinical psychology from the University of Michigan. After working as a clinical psychologist for 10 years, she moved to Connecticut and was a stay-at-home mother of her two children. She returned to academia in 1994 and has been teach¬ing child psychology and life span development for over 15 years at Central Connecticut State University, where she is a professor in the Department of Psychological Science. Her research on the social development of young children and on the relation of media use to attention difficulties has appeared in Developmental Psychology, the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology, Infant and Child Development, Computers and Education, and CyberPsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking Her research on the scholarship of teaching and learning can be found in New Directions for Teaching and Learning, College Teaching, and the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.



Joyce Munsch received her Ph.D. in human development and family studies from Cornell University. She was a faculty member in human development and family stud¬ies at Texas Tech University for 14 years, where she also served as associate dean for research in the College of Human Sciences for 2 years. In 2002, Dr. Munsch came to California State University at Northridge as the found¬ing chair and professor in the Department of Child and Adolescent Development. Dr. Munsch’s research has focused on adolescent stress and coping and social network research. Her work has been published in the Journal of School Psychology, Adolescence, The Journal of Early Adolescence, the Journal of Research on Adolescence, and the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry. Dr. Munsch was the co-director of the Early Head Start program at Texas Tech University, co–principal investigator for three Texas Youth Commission grants, and administered the Jumpstart program at California State University at Northridge for over 7 years.

Very useful

I like the fact that this is a hands-on approach, not just theoretical. It has very useful practical applications. The writing is very clear and does not suffer from the usual academic jargon.

This book teaches you everything you need to know about the development of children. I have studied and read many books for my training as a child therapist- this one is by far the most useful.

About the Author
Lawrence Gerstein, Ph.D., is the George & Frances Ball Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Director of Doctoral Training in Counseling Psychology, and Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies at Ball State University. He has published over 100 scholarly articles and book chapters and is active in professional organizations serving on numerous editorial boards and committees. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and for six years, he was the Editor of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling. Professor Gerstein's academic expertise is in cross-cultural psychology, peace psychology, consultation, and research methodology. A recipient of the Carl D. Perkins Government Relations Award from the American Association for Counseling and Development and the Kitty Cole Human Rights Award from the American Counseling Association, Professor Gerstein was once again honored with the 2010 Ursula Gielen Global Psychology Book Award by the American Psychological Association Division 52 for The International Handbook of Cross-Cultural Counseling for making the most significant and fundamental contribution to psychology as a global discipline. Professor Gerstein earned his Ph.D. in counseling and social psychology from the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia in 1983.



P. Paul Heppner is a professor of the Department of Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri. He is cofounder of the MU Center for Multicultural Research, Training and Consultation and was the inaugural co-chair of the International Section of counseling Psychology. He has served on several national and international editorial boards and as editor of The Counseling Psychologist.

Stefania Ægisdóttir is an associate professor in the Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services at Ball State University. She has written about cross-cultural research methods, attitudes and expectations about counseling, clinical judgment, and international and cross-cultural issues and competencies in counseling research and training. She recently completed a three-year grant from the Icelandic Research Fund to study psychological help-seeking patterns of Icelanders.

Seung-Ming Alvin Leung is a professor in and chairperson of the Department of Educational Psychology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. His major areas of interest include career development and assessment; cross-cultural, multicultural, and international issues in counseling; and counseling in educational settings. He is currently the editor of Asian Journal of Counselling and previously served as associate editor of The Counseling Psychologist.



Kathryn Louise Norsworthy is currently a Professor, Cornell Distinguished Scholar from 2005 at Rollins College. Previously, she was the Department Chair in the Graduate Studies in Counseling. She has taught a range of graduate courses in counseling programs from a multicultural feminist and diversity perspective. She had developed on-campus counseling clinic and practicing structure and has supervised practicum student. She is a consultant on a joint international project between the World Health Organization and National Board of Certified Counselors in developing culture-centered mental health delivery systems and training curricula in countries of the Global South. Focus: "The underserved and never-served." Meetings held in Paris (2/06) and New Delhi (10/06).

About the Author

Ronald M. Holmes is Coroner, in the Jefferson County Coroner's office and Professor Emeritus of Justice Administration at the University of Louisville. He is the author of several books, among them Profiling Violent Crimes, Sex Crimes, and Serial Murder. He is also the author of more than 50 articles appearing in scholarly publications. He is Vice President of the National Center for the Study of Unresolved Homicides and has completed more than 500 psychological profiles for police departments across the United States. He received his doctorate from Indiana University.

Hundreds of clumsy errors in the text and index.

Scholars and criminologists beware! Behind a paper-thin scholarly veneer, this volume is worse than useless to any serious reader. The authors open with self-congratulation of their own "research vigor," denouncing competitors who produce books "loaded with errors," then deliver a slim volume containing literally hundreds of careless mistakes--countless names misspelled, cases misplaced geographically and chronologically (one killer hanged in 1896 is described as active in the 1940s!), etc. The index is a joke, with most of the page citations inaccurate, and that's only the beginning. Some killers appear twice under different names (their own and some garbled version), while others appear to be mythical characters (e.g., "Leslie Hooten"). The most hilarious error finds a list of "Serial Killer Victims" in the index naming several authors from the book's bibliography ... plus O.J. Simpson! Worst of all, the book appears to be one massive ego stroke, with the primary author referring to himself by name more than 80 times in less than 160 pages. At a hardcover cost of 28 cents per page, anyone desiring accurate information on serial murder is well advised to shop around.

Serial Murder--1988 version vs 1998 version

Two important things must first be noted: Amazon.com is listing a 1988 title (Serial Murder)by Holmes and DeBurger. That book was received with very positive reviews and was widely recognized as a "first" in the attempt to deal systematically with this particular form of homicide. It appears that Amazon.com is publishing reviews that do not pertain to this first edition, but which are based on evaluation of SERIAL MURDER by Ronald and Stephen Holmes, published in 1998 by Sage. The Holmes'(father-and-son) effort represents a buttressing of the 1988 edition with considerable expansion of specific cases and developments in the intervening decade. While there is a bit of "hurrying to completion" evident here with attendant errors, typos, missing or misplaced names, etc., this book--which builds well on the first edition by Holmes and DeBurger-- does represent the best systematic work available on the topic. Amazon.com should pay closer attention to its listings and get book titles linked correctly with their actual authors.

Good, but...

This book was required for my Serial Murder class, and while it was interesting in the beginning, it is not anymore. I find it very repetitive and out of date. All of the information found in the beginning pages is from 1993-ish and earlier. It really does need an update. I also think that the authors need to have more sources in the book (it seems like the only sources are from the authors' articles).

About the Author
Dawn M. McBride is a professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught research methods for the past 13 years. Her research interests include automatic forms of memory, false memory, prospective memory, and forgetting. In addition to research methods, she teaches courses in introductory psychology, cognition and learning, human memory, and a graduate course in experimental design. She is a recipient of the Illinois State University Teaching Initiative Award. Her out-of-work interests include spending time with her family, traveling, watching Philadelphia (her place of birth) sports teams, and reading British murder mysteries. She earned her PhD in cognitive psychology from the University of California, Irvine, and her BA from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Getting the next edition isn't worth it. This covered everything we did in class and my professor personally endorsed its use since the new book has changed so little. Great way to save a pretty penny if you're a starving college student!

About the Author

Anna Leon-Guerrero is Professor of Sociology at Pacific Lutheran University in Washington. She received her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She teaches courses in statistics, social theory and social problems. Her areas of research and publications include family business, social welfare policy, and social service program evaluation. She is also the co-author of Social Statistics for a Diverse Society, and co-editor of Contemporary Readings in Social Problems.



Michael Mayerfeld Bell is an associate professor of rural sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mike is principally an environmental sociologist, but he also conducts research on culture, economic sociology, sustainable agriculture, community, place, rural society, inequality, gender, the body, democracy, and social theory. Two central themes can be heard in all of his work: dialogics and the sociology of "nature," broadly conceived. Mike is the author of Childerley: Nature and Morality in a Country Village (University of Chicago Press, 1994), which was co-winner of the 1995 Outstanding Book Award of the Sociology of Culture Section of the American Sociological Association. He is the author, along with Gregory Peter, Susan Jarnagin, and Donna Bauer, of the forthcoming book Farming for Us All: Practical Agriculture and the Cultivation of Sustainability (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2004). The second edition of his An Invitation to Environmental Sociology (Pine Forge Press [Sage]), 1998) will appear in 2004. Mike has also worked as a geologist, and is the author of The Face of Connecticut: People, Geology, and the Land (State of Connecticut, 1985), which won an American Library Association award.

Mike continues to have a second life as a part-time composer of songs, fiddle tunes, and classical music. He also plays mandolin in an old-time string band, the Barn Owl Band, which recently appeared on the national public radio show A Prairie Home Companion. He is currently at work on a string quartet, a suite for piano, and a symphonic poem.

About the Author
Marieke de Mooij, Ph.D. (Netherlands), is a consultant in cross-cultural communications, as well as a retired profesora associada of international advertising at the University of Navarra in Spain and visiting professor at several universities across the world. She is the author of several academic publications on the influence of culture on marketing and advertising. She has also authored books on culture and consumer behavior as well as culture and communication theory worldwide.

A unique perspective on consumer behaviour

The book is unique in that Marieke K Mooij uses theories from cultural anthroplogy and interpersonal communication to present a framework for consumer behaviour. It is particularly useful for practioners who are working in underresearched markets and are looking for ways to explain why consumers behave the way they do. The book makes extensive use of Hofstede's 5-D model to locate members of different cultures along the dimensions of culture and then uses this to explain differences in buying behaviour, communication styles and advertising appeals. The conclusion of the book is that individual behaviour is shaped more by the culture they belong to than it is by income or other differentiators. The one limitation of the book is that most of the examples are European, but I would recommend it even for those interested in Asian markets

This book review is on a 'titre personnel" basis.
I enjoyed the international advertising course which Marieke gave at Universidad de Navarra in 1997. As a teacher she is very capable of communicating the importance and urgency of this diverse and complex subject: managing marketing communications and brands within the outer/ and inner spheres of market cultures. Marieke applies the 5 dimensional model of G.Hofstede to illustrate and diferentiate a clear and full colour image of cultures and values. Being dutch myself, I recognise both the theory of Hofstede, but also the paradoxes Marieke has found. Intrigueing phenomena such as Japanese business success and collectivism, such as status and success in feminine cultures etc etc are often raising eyebrows, and not seldomly at highbrow corporate levels.
Cultural understanding, I have learnt, is possible only after understanding one's own culture, and a commitment to learn about the other culture, not matching it with your own. Marieke does this very well, she places anecdotes and case-studies is an objective setting, viewing it with an uncoloured microscope. She has added theory, academic research and good practice to make this book complete.
This book, for me, is one of the few great books on international (intercultural) marketing communications (and brand management).

The book itself is fine. The problem I'm facing is navigating through the pages, especially skipping to different chapters. MOST of the time, the book freezes, does not respond, and I am forced to close out and reopen it. Once reopened, it takes three to four tries to go to the chapter that I wish to read. When I access this on my laptop, it's a little easier to navigate, but it's still a bit annoying to not be able to scroll normally, only page by page, and it's slow loading.
In normal books, this usually isn't a problem because you read it all the way through once. For a college textbook, since flipping back and forth throughout the book is crucial, it becomes a problem. I am studying online at a university in the US from Brazil in order to be with my father through some difficult times this semester. This means the eTextbook is my lifeline. I don't have access to physical books, and I don't have other students who could help me the way they could in a traditional classroom setting. So far, I have been able to get by studying for the exams, but the added pressure of not knowing if my book will open doesn't help!
Compared to the other eTextbook I have on Chegg, this is not a good layout.
