A Primer on introducing "global" literature into the K-8 classroom.
By Jacquelyn
Reading Globally, K-8 offers a primer on how to introduce "global" literature into the classroom, particularly in the K-8 classroom. Written by three academics out of Ohio State, the book lists the various facets of globalization spurring educators to incorporate more global literature into classroom curriculum. It lists the pedagogical benefits of reading such literature. It includes a section on simple approaches and activities to incorporating it in all disciplines (language arts, social studies, math and science, and the arts), a chapter on rationales for how global literature aligns with NCTE standards, and a section on evaluating the authenticity of texts of global literature. All throughout the book, the authors have sprinkled useful titles, including literature from both the first world and the third world, by both Americans and natives to those foreign countries.

While the book is thorough and valuable, I had two complaints: 1. The book is somewhat basic. It takes a very idealistic approach to cosmopolitanism and assumes that introducing these books will encourage tolerance and empathy for others, a simplistic approach which many scholars have criticized in recent years. 2. The definition of "global" literature employed by the book is so vast as to be meaningless. According to the authors, global literature includes literature about other countries that sound pretty authentic. Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of James Rumsford but there is a difference between literature by foreigners and literature about foreign places and, by glossing over these issues, the book sidesteps issues of cultural poaching, stereotyping and misrepresentation.

Great speaker & great book!
By SETeacher
I use what I was able to quickly write down from the first time I heard him speak, and today I have downloaded the book (to my Kindle) but I have yet to read it. I have heard Dr. Evanski speak on 2 separate occasions. He is an amazingly gifted speaker and never seems to run out of energy! His ideas are simple and easy to implement in any classroom; with a few students or as he does, up to 200 in some instances! He understands what its like to be in a classroom and he practices what he preaches! Please keep sharing Dr. Evanski by writing your books and doing your presentations.

This book goes a long way in conceptualizing access to the general education curriculum for students with severe intellectual disabilities and operationalizing it within typical regular class activities. It is a valuable resource for teachers, special educators, parents, and related service providers interested in extending inclusive opportunities for students with severe disabilities." (Michael F. Giangreco, Professor 2009-08-13)

"A useful resource for all educational teams who plan for students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities. In each chapter Downing summarizes current, key research and offers practical applications from her wealth of experience in schools. Readers who are new to planning for students with severe disabilities will find excellent coverage of the basics like systematic instruction, positive behavior support, and collaboration. Professionals with extensive experience will benefit from the new ideas for planning, including specific examples of adapting academic content, considering both family goals and state standards in planning, and using universal design for learning." (Diane M. Browder, Snyder Distinguished Professor of Special Education 2009-09-10)

"Anyone who reads this book will benefit from the dedicated career and expertise of June Downing encapsulated in a clear, practical resource.
