About the Author

H. Lynn Erickson is an independent consultant assisting schools and districts nationally and internationally with curriculum design. From 1987 to 1994, she was the director of curriculum for the Federal Way Public Schools in Federal Way, Washington. She is a recognized presenter at national conferences, and is featured in the video "Creating Concept-Based Curriculum for Deep Understanding" (produced by the Video Journal) as well as in videos from the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. Lots of mumbo jumbo, little meaning or usefulness

For a title that mentions the word "soul," there is a complete dearth of it in Erickson's writing. Rather, she is formulaic, and the book (all her books, actually) read like someone is going through a list of educational jargon and trying to put as many of the words into sentences as possible.

And after you've slogged through all that meaningless tripe, there's nothing you can *do* with it. Totally useless.

About the Author

Dennis K. Mumby (Ph.D., M.A., Southern Illinois University; BA, Sheffield Hallam University) is Professor and Chair of Communication Studies at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a Fellow of UNC’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities. His research focuses on the relationships among discourse, power, gender, and organizing. A Fellow of the International Communication Association and a National Communication Association Distinguished Scholar, he has published six books and over 50 articles in the area of critical organization studies, and his work has appeared in journals such as Academy of Management Review, Management Communication Quarterly, Communication Monographs, Discourse & Society, and Human Relations. He is past chair of the Organizational Communication Division of NCA, a six-time winner of the division’s annual research award, and a recipient of the division’s Fredric M. Jablin Award for contributions to the field of organizational communication.

About the Author

Kenneth D. Moore (EdD, Curriculum and Instruction, University of Houston) has been involved in teacher education for more than 35 years. During his tenure in higher education he served as Dean of Teacher Education for 12 years and worked closely with school administrators, classroom teachers, student teachers, and teacher education candidates. Dr. Moore has authored four books, numerous journal publications, an ERIC monograph, and has presented many papers at regional and national conventions. He has also served as Director of the Southwest Regional Association of Teachers of Science, President of the Oklahoma Association of Teacher Educators, President of the Oklahoma Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, and President of the Arkansas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. He is a past member of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Board of Examiners (BOE).



Jacqueline Hansen is Associate Professor of Education and Elementary Education Coordinator at Murray State University. Hansen taught in the elementary classroom for 23 years before teaching future and current elementary teachers at the university level. About the Author
Thomas S. C. Farrell is a professor in applied linguistics at Brock University, Canada. He has been involved with ESL and applied linguistics for the past 27 years and has written extensively on topics such as reflective practice, language teacher development, and language teacher education. His recent books include Reflective Practice in Action (2004, Corwin Press), Reflecting on Classroom Communication in Asia (2004, Longman), and Professional Development for Language Teachers (2005, Cambridge University Press, coauthored with Jack Richards).

Helpful in developing thoughtful classroom communication

Though I am still working on using some of the professional development ideas in this book, namely recording and analyzing student-teacher interactions, this book has a very simple, straightforward approach to being mindful about how classroom communication supports learning. Before reading this, I never really considered recording and writing down my interactions, but after reading the research and strategies for better communication, I am excited to learn more about how I actually communicate, rather than how I perceive myself to. The author wrote conscientiously about being a strong communicator and provided methods to analyze verbal and non-verbal communication in the classroom setting for optimal results. The strategies in this book would be helpful for anyone who has a classroom or works in an educational setting, no matter what subject or what age of students taught. I would recommend this book for any educator who cares about the importance of being a reflective practitioner.

About the Author

William B. Werther, Jr. is Professor of Management at the University of Miami’s School of Business Administration, a Fellow and former Chair of the International Society for Productivity and Quality Research, a Fellow in the World Academy of Productivity Science, and former Chair for the Managerial Consultation Division of the Academy of Management. His teaching and research focuses on strategy with its implications for human performance and corporate social responsibility. An award-winning author and teacher, he has published more than 100 professional articles and a number of books including Third Sector Management (Georgetown University Press, 2001) and Human Resources and Personnel Management, Fifth Edition (McGraw-Hill, 1996). He earned a PhD (University of Florida, 1971) in Economics and Business Administration (Phi Beta Kappa). Before joining the faculty at the University of Miami in 1985, he was Professor of Management at Arizona State University for 14 years.



David Chandler is Assistant Professor of Management and Co-Director of the Managing for Sustainability Program at the University of Colorado Denver. His broad area of research interest lies at the dynamic interface between the organization and its institutional environment. Empirically, he focuses on studying organizations within the context of corporate social responsibility, business ethics, and firm/stakeholder relations. In addition to teaching the capstone corporate strategy course in the Professional MBA and 11-month MBA Programs at the University of Colorado Denver, he also teaches a Sustainable Business Practices course in the Executive MBA Program. He received his Ph.D. in Management from the University of Texas at Austin.

It covers enough material but not in too much depth for a first-year student to understand the basics of small group communication. Additionally, I like the interpersonal approach this text takes in regards to the individual in the small group. Our students need to know how to 'act' in a small group, and this book provides that direction. Moreover, I think the small case studies at the beginning of each chapter will encourage the student to actually read the chapter because they are interesting and relate to our students’ everyday lives." About the Author

Scott A. Myers (PhD, Kent State University) is a professor and Peggy Rardin McConnell Chair in the Department of Communication Studies at West Virginia University (WVU) where he teaches courses in instructional communication, organizational communication, and communication pedagogy. His research interests center primarily on the student-instructor relationship in the college classroom and the adult sibling relationship, with his research appearing in outlets such as Communication Education, Journal of Family Communication, Communication Research Reports, and Communication Quarterly, among others. At WVU, he was recognized by the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences as a Woodburn Professor (2005–2007) and as an Outstanding Teacher in 2010. He is a former editor of Communication Teacher, a former executive director of the Central States Communication Association (CSCA), and a past president of CSCA.

This Book Pays Divdends!

Very good. So appropriate for upper level communication majors. I use the scenarios at each chapter launch as class role plays. We go on to actual small group teams that are given research topics along actual business lines. This is my third year to use the text. One of my students led a small group in his business venture in Uganda, Africa, that was recognized by an Oxford University enterprise consortium and he won a cash prize!

I found it difficult to read at times because I was not given the figures to see in order to understand better the text. Also headings were not distinct and/or missing which would have made it easier to read. There are not many texts like this available so it would allow instructors some flexibility in choosing a text appropriate for their needs. About the Author
Elliot T. Berkman is Assistant Professor of Psychology and director of the Social and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Oregon. He has been teaching statistics to graduate students using SPSS for the past six years. In that time, he has been awarded the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Arthur J. Woodward Peer Mentoring Award. He has published numerous papers on the social psychological and neural processes involved in goal pursuit. His research on smoking cessation was recognized with the Joseph A. Gengerelli Distinguished Dissertation Award. He received his PhD in 2010 from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Steve P. Reise is professor, chair of Quantitative Psychology, and co-director of the Advanced Quantitative Methods training program at University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Reise is an internationally renowned teacher in quantitative methods; in particular, the application of item response theory models to personality, psychopathology, and patient reported outcomes. In recognition of his dedication to teaching, Dr. Reise was named "Professor of the Year" in 1995-96 by the graduate students in the psychology department at UC Riverside, and was awarded the 2008 Psychology Department Distinguished teaching award. Most recently, in recognition of his campus-wide and global contributions, Dr. Reise was awarded the University of California campus-wide distinguished teaching award. Dr. Reise has spent the majority of the last twenty years investigating the application of latent variable models in general and item response theory (IRT) models in particular to personality, psychopathology and health outcomes data. In 1998, Dr. Reise was recognized for his work and received the Raymond B. Cattell award for outstanding multivariate experimental psychologist. Along with Dr. Susan Embretson, Dr. Reise has the leading textbook on item response theory called "Item Response Theory for Psychologists" (2000 and forthcoming). He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Psychology at the University of Minnesota.

I purchased this book because I wanted the students in my research lab to have a "reminder" of how to conduct various tests in SPSS. For that purpose, this book works wonderfully. That is, if you know what analysis you want to conduct (and why you want to conduct it), this book will help you work through either the point-and-click or syntax-based procedures for running that test. It will also give you some indication of what the results mean via annotated output. Further, this book goes into some of SPSS's graphics ability, showing the reader how to construct and refine graphs and figures (e.g., how to construct a scatterplot and add jitter).

This book is very straightforward--the chapters get right into the steps for undertaking a particular analysis in SPSS. To me, that means it would not be great as an ONLY textbook for a statistics class, as there is little discussion of the theory behind the analysis. The book covers just about any analysis that an undergraduate social/behavioral science student would conduct, and many major analyses that a graduate student might want.

In sum, this book makes a great reference for researchers, and a great supplement to a statistics course.

About the Author

Gail Saunders-Smith is a former classroom teacher, Reading Recovery® Teacher Leader and served as Reading/ Language Arts K-12 Supervisor and Coordinator of State and Federal Programs for the Summit County ESC. Currently, Gail is an assistant professor in the Beeghly College of Education at Youngstown State University. She is also an independent staff developer, writer, and editor. She has presented across the United States and Canada and written several books and articles on all aspects of literacy development. Gail holds a BS and MA in Early Childhood Education from Kent State University and a MS in Administration and Supervision from Youngstown State University. She completed post-graduate work at The Ohio State University and earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from The University of Akron.

Gail has written fifty-five books for children, has written widely on literacy instruction, and serves as consulting editor at Red Brick Learning. Her professional books, "The Ultimate Guided Reading How-To Book," and, "The Ultimate Small Group Reading How-To Book," are available from Corwin Press. A third book will be published in the spring of 2009.  Gail has visited schools in Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and Russia. She is a reader, writer, student, and teacher.

Great for new teachers

This book would be a great resource for aspiring and new teachers. Unfortunately, colleges don't provide enough depth in this area. The book is an easy read and is truly user-friendly. As an experienced teacher I did not find anything that I am not already doing except for the author's point on vocabulary. According to her, it should not be a part of the prereading. I still plan to work with vocabulary but I am going to try it in the postreading block. I did copy a chart for future reference before passing this book on. So, the book was not a complete waste. Whatever you do, do NOT pay full price for this book!! (Read below.)

I smiled when I read other readers' distress with the editing of this book. I was very annoyed with this. I actually wrote to Zephyr about this. There are many mechanical and syntactical errors in the book. I, too, was offended that a professional text was so poorly handled. I told the publisher I would withhold judgment until hearing their position in the unlikely chance that there was a reasonable explanation. As of today, they have not responded. To me that speaks volumes. I will not be purchasing any Zephyr Press, Chicago Review Press, or Independent Publishers Group items in the future.

What on earth happened here? I've never written a review before, but I was so upset by this book's publication that I have to write one this time. It is virtually impossible to read this book and to have any respect for its content with the absolutely amazing number of standard English writing errors. This book looks like a rough draft that hadn't been proofread/edited even once before it was published. I can't believe it's in print!!!! This book was purchased at a price commensurate with other books of its size. For that price, I would expect that the book would have been to a polished stage, and this was barely a first/second draft. How did this book get into print and offered on Amazon as a legitimate published book when it's merely a very, very rough draft??

About the Author
Dr. Lorri E. Cooper teaches courses in leadership, managing innovation, and the graduate Management program capstone. She earned a master’s degree at Vanderbilt University and her doctorate at the University of Virginia, where she minored in leadership studies and wrote her dissertation on leadership development for private college presidents and their governing boards. During her time at the University of Virginia, she served as a research associate and then as an administrative director at the Darden School of Business. Dr. Cooper’s research and writing focuses on leadership development (particularly for practicing managers), management education, and how principles of design can effectively enhance and influence leadership practices. Her edited book The Adjunct Faculty Handbook, 2nd edition will be published in May 2010. Prior to her academic career, Dr. Cooper worked in management consulting with banking and real estate industries in the Washington, DC, metropolitan area. Dr. Cooper belongs to OB Teaching Society and to the Midwest Academy of Management.

About the Author

Donna Walker Tileston is a veteran teacher and administrator. She is currently the president of Strategic Teaching and Learning, a consulting firm that provides services to schools throughout the United States and worldwide. Donna’s publications include Ten Best Teaching Practices: How Brain Research, Learning Styles, and Standards Define Teaching Competencies (2000), which has been on Corwin's bestseller list since its first year in print, in addition to the ten-volume award-winning series What Every Teacher Should Know, now in its second edition. Other recent titles are Teaching Strategies for Active Learning (2006), Teaching Strategies that Prepare Students for High Stakes Tests (2008), and Closing the Poverty and Culture Gap (2009). Donna received her BA from the University of North Texas, her MA from East Texas State University, and her EdD from Texas A & M University-Commerce. In this short book (83 pages), Donna Walker Tileston had distilled the essential elements 10 research-based teaching practices that will transform student achievement. You will learn how to incorporate brain research findings of Eric Jensen and others with learning styles and learning standards to create a framework for teaching any subject area.

Each chapter includes a list of assessment tools and indicators of success. This is very helpful in developing powerful learning lessons and applying the 10 practices in the classroom.

This book is my teaching bible. It is helping me become the teacher my students need and want. Put this one next to Harry Wong's, 1st Days of School, Fay and Funk's, Teaching with Love and Logic. Essential for every new teacher. This is a book you will wear out.

Great educator resource

I have been very interested in the science behind brain-based learning for awhile now and this book does a great job of writing about brain research, while still making the book easily digestible. I have actually found myself several times getting sucked into the book and reading for longer than I had planned. I have a plethora of highlights and dog ears that I am sure I will return to often. Definitely a book I can see myself rereading every year.
