Must-Read for Educational Leaders!
By Tori
Technology Leadership for School Improvement by Rosemary Papa is a definite must-read for any educational leaders out there! This non-fiction book is highly recommended for any educational leader out there looking for effective and successful ways to administrate and mange technology in K-12 schools.

I purchased this book a couple months ago for a computer educator’s course I am currently taking at Indiana University Bloomington. Within the first few pages, this book was definitely a catch for me. While this book was a very long, in-depth read, I realized how much I had learned by the time I was done. As a possible future technology leader, this book provided me with so much valuable information, while still being an engaging read. It was great!

In my opinion, this book should be considered the “bible” for technology leaders. Before reading this book, I did not realize how much knowledge needs to be gained in order to be successful in this field, but this book does just that! I love that this book is very organized and detailed, a flows in a way that makes perfect sense for the reader.

The main theme of this book explains the knowledge and skills that are needed for a technology leader to effectively and successful administrate and maintain technology in K-12 schools. While I think the targeted audience is for administrators, I personally believe that this book should be read by anyone in the education field that is using technology, so basically everyone! Technology is becoming more relevant and popular in all types of classrooms across the world, and this book is just what you need to ensure that technology is being used in the best way while staying safe!

I thought that all the topics that this book touched on were equally important. Some of the topics this book discusses include the standards involved with the implementation of technology, the importance of professional development, distance learning, the process of planning, designing, and implementing tools, and the social, cultural, and legal issues involved with technology in education. As you can see, this book covers a wide range of topics, but in a way that flows together and makes sense. I really liked how each topic was talked about by an expert in that field, which makes it reassuring that this book is accurate so that you know you are learning things that are practical and actually relevant in schools. Although, my personal favorite chapters in this book were Chapter 6: Planning, Designing, Implementing, and Evaluating Technology and Chapter 10 Security, Internet Safety, Copyright, and Plagiarism. To me, these are the most important and difficult concepts to learn and transfer into schools. I think it can be very challenging to find appropriate tools for the school’s specific needs, so this chapter was very helpful in providing techniques and recommendations of how to do so effectively. Chapter 6 says, “Understandings of the ways to use technology to enhance pedagogy and content are continually evolving. By developing a community of practice, an administrator works to prepare his or her staff not only for the current view but also to change with the understandings” (page 124). This was one of my favorite quotes of the book because it is so true. After implementing technology into a school, it is so important that we make sure that our schools and students stay safe, which is why I really liked Chapter 10. Chapter 10 says, “School leaders must prepare themselves and their schools not only for the benefits technology bring to their schools but also for the possibility of unseen dangers associated with the use of the Internet” (page 189). Many schools do not think about technology from this perspective, and I was so glad that this book created a whole chapter about this, like wow. While these were my personal favorite parts of the book, this book also includes so much more valuable and crucial information.

There were three things in this book that really stood out to me, including the concept that technology leaders should learn as they classrooms teachers are expected to teach. This really stood out to me, and makes complete sense. We should hold our technology leaders accountable for responsibilities just like teachers. They must be able to know how to implement effective technology into classrooms just like teachers are expected to know the content they are required to teach. Another thing that stood out to me was the fact that a successful digital learning environment requires creativity, courage, and visionary decision-making. I had never thought about all the work that is required to ensure that each individual learning environment is successful, considering each environment would be different based on the needs of the school, teachers, and students. Lastly,

Some books like this one can be very boring and drag on and on. Although, I did not feel that this book was like that as a reader. Many times books that try to persuade so much information can be hard to stay engaged in and process everything you are reading, but I did not think this was the case here. As a future educator, this book was very engaging and practical to me. I know that the information I learned from this book will be very valuable in my future career. I plan to keep it with my education collection as a future reference. This book did not really raise any issues for the reader to think about and solve on their own, but rather discussed ways in much detail of ways to solve them. This was another thing I really liked about this book, and it was really beneficial. This book has made me feel so much more prepared not only as a possible future technology coach, but also as a future teacher. There were many things in this book that were very practical to my own classroom that I am sure most teachers are not aware of regarding technology. The book ended with a great quote by Thomas L. Friedman saying, “We live in a technological age where every study shows that the more knowledge you have as a worker and the more knowledge workers you have as an economy, the faster your incomes will rise. Therefore, the centerpiece of our stimulus, the core driving principle, should be to stimulate everything that makes us smarter and attracts more smart people” (page 273).

I highly agree that any other individual in the educational field should make this book a top priority. While the target audience of this book is more for administrators, any teacher or other educational staff member can highly benefit from reading this book. With the way this book is split up, it can be read at any pace and in any order, or even just read one part of the book that is relevant to you! With the way that technology quickly emerging in to education, it is so important to make sure that we as educators are doing everything we can to ensure that technology is being used in ways that it is most effective and supports higher student achievement. We also need to make sure that our schools and students are staying safe in the process of using technology. With this book, I strongly believe that any educator can make a huge different in technology leadership for school improvement and success!

New to tech. leadership? Good resource
By Corinna E Crafton
I'm a relative newcomer to technology leadership and found Papa's collection of perspectives very helpful. What is most useful for me is that most chapters provide a template for putting theory into practice. I especially like the chapter by Shadow Armfield discussing how one can plan, design, implement, and evaluate technology in a school setting.
