"I very much appreciated Understanding and Evaluating Qualitative Educational Research as a resource to help those new to educational research to understand what the different approaches are and how they can be critiqued through the research literature. 
Lichtman’s approach to the problem of enabling neophyte researchers (although often experienced in professional practice as educators) is to choose two examples from the research literature which exemplify a particular approach. Each chapter provides an overview of the approach and then the two articles which she critiques by a running commentary alongside each article. I found this format very helpful. She has chosen articles which do not necessarily provide a ‘best practice’model and this helps the reader begin to identify what information is missing, what is contentious and how particular approaches have specific discourses and ways of examining the world. 
This book provides a gentle way to examine paradigms and methodologies and it will certainly be one that I recommend to my students and colleagues."

The friendly, accessible tone of the book invites otherwise intimidated students to engage with qualitative research. Reading Dr. Lichtman's personal notes alongside the text provides support in understanding concepts that might have been overlooked by the novice. About the Author
Marilyn Lichtman is a retired professor of educational research and evaluation from Virginia Tech at both the main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia, and at the graduate campus in Falls Church, Virginia. After attending The University of Chicago as an undergraduate, she moved to Washington, D.C. She completed all her degrees at The George Washington University, receiving her doctorate in educational research. She taught both qualitative and quantitative research courses while at The Catholic University of America and Virginia Tech. She is a regular user of the Internet and social media and was an early contributor to teaching qualitative courses online. She is currently on the editorial boards of The Qualitative Report and Forum: Qualitative Social Research (FQS), both online journals devoted to qualitative issues. She has served as a consultant to many school systems, private companies, and government agencies. She has traveled extensively throughout the world. Currently she serves on the docent council at the Corcoran gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Understanding and Evaluating Qualitative Educational Research

The format is strong in having examples of qualitative research with the author's remarks following along in the margin. That was the high point. Otherwise, I'm not a fan. The examples of research provided are, according to the author, not strong examples. Thus, we are to learn about each type of qualitative research is by looking at a bad example. It seems the author wants to begin with deconstruction without learning first the patterns of construction. This is not helpful. The comments in the margin, while a good idea, are an opportunity squandered. The remarks are inconsistent in providing some guidance, filled with commands about what you will appreciate or know, and questions that leave the reader (this reader) wondering - not wondering about the research, but wondering what the author intended by asking. In addition, I found the introduction to qualitative research to be a kind of we/they culture war presentation. It doesn't have to be that way, but the author takes an oppositional approach at times.
The various representations of qualitative research are helpful to know, but I need another book - a book that I wish I'd started with.

I'm echoing other reviewers by saying that the concept of this book is brilliant. The author provides examples of articles and annotates them with her own comments in the margins. Her comments are not nearly as useful as they could be. She openly admits that the articles are often not good examples of the methodology, but her comments do very little to actually deconstruct why and how the article fails to be a good example. This is terrible pedagogy for trying to teach students how to properly use and understand those qualitative methodologies. There are also important methodologies that she skips in this book. If I could give it less than one star, I would.

Love the annotated instruction which accompanies the examples. The author gives current and pertinent examples of various types of research. She also give a clear and easy format to follow.
