Review
"Sylwester makes a strong case for how neuroscience has changed the knowledge base and offers ways the new knowledge could and should be incorporated into planning for a child’s education. The author’s subtle sense of humor communicates complex conclusions with great effectiveness." (Barbara Clark, Professor Emeritus 2010-03-22)

"This valuable, reader-friendly book helps parents, teachers, and others who work with young children understand the complex and amazing processes involved as the young brain grows and develops." (David A. Sousa, Consultant in Educational Neuroscience 2010-03-22)

"The book reminds us of the importance of nurturing children during a time when schools are facing the great stress of having students perform on standardized tests. We need to help children develop from their core through nurture, even if that development cannot be measured on a test." (Sonia Trehan Kelly, Director 2010-03-22)

A Must Read for Educational Leaders and Policy Makers
By Donna Wilson, Ph.D.
I gave this book 5 Stars because it does an excellent job making current research on the child's brain understandable for a lay audience. Just as importantly the book gives good examples of what can be done to give all children the opportunity to reach their full potential. Sylwester provides excellent chapters on the importance of movement, nutrition, and social-emotional development. In particular, there is a strong emphasis on how experience changes both the function and structure of the child's brain. The solid research upon which this book is based makes it a good choice for educators and parents who seek to assist children's learning, as well as a must read for educational leaders and policy makers who want to make informed decisions about how to support learning in our schools and communities.

A Child's Brain: A Need to Read
By Michael A. Rousell, Ph.D.
Dr. Sylwester states, "The principal task of childhood is to discover how the world works." I submit that a logical and practical extension should be: A principal job of parents, teachers, and those who work closely with young children should be to support children developmentally as they make these critical discoveries. A Child's Brain, The Need for Nurture is the map that helps us navigate these important journeys. This engaging book provides easily digestible neurological foundations and practical strategies for managing the challenges children face in their development.
