About the Author
Carolyn Chapman is an international educational consultant, author, and teacher who has taught in kindergarten to college classrooms. Her interactive, hands-on professional development training sessions challenge educators to use strategies that ensure success for learners of all ages. Chapman has written many books about differentiated instruction, multiple intelligences, multiple assessments, and the brain-compatible classroom. She is coauthor with Gayle Gregory of the landmark Corwin Press book Differentiated Instructional Strategies: One Size Doesn't Fit All.

Rita King has more than 20 years of teacher training experience and administrative experience as principal and director of Middle Tennessee State University's teacher training program in the laboratory school. Most recently, she was an adjunct professor in the Department of Educational Leadership at the university. She now consults internationally in the areas of multiple intelligences, practical applications of brain-based research, differentiated learning, reading and writing strategies, mathematics instruction, creating effective learning environments, and strategies for test success. Eric Shiraev is a Russian-born American professor, researcher,
and author. He took his academic degrees at St. Petersburg
University in Russia and completed a postdoctoral program in
the United States at UCLA. He served in various positions at
St. Petersburg University, Northern Virginia Community
College, Oregon State University, George Washington University,
and George Mason University. He is an author, coauthor,
and coeditor of 12 books and numerous publications in the
fields of cross-cultural psychology, social psychology, political
psychology, and comparative studies. In his publications, he develops a multidisciplinary
approach to human behavior and experience. He believes in a universally progressive
role of psychology to promote awareness, incremental improvements, and
social initiative. He resides near Washington, D.C.

In human years, psychology as a discipline is just about 18 years old. The discipline

maturation over centuries.

A History of Psychology: A Global Perspective

The timeline of A History of Psychology spans from the beginning of psychology in ancient times to today as well as a look into the future, and presents it in a global perspective. The text highlights a fresh, fascinating look at the growth of knowledge in the Greek, Indian, and Chinese traditions, as well as the Roman knowledge, eventually highlights the Middle Ages and the restoration of Aristotle's prestige; presents a dynamic view during the seventeenth century Enlightenment of David Hume and other famous philosopher/psychologists during that time. Through the eighteenth century, the text highlights German, Russian, and other nineteenth and twentieth century worldwide laboratories. The text then turns to Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud in the early twentieth century. The use of archetypes and numerous other discoveries from Carl Jung then becomes a place of interest, and Jean Piaget, John Watson, and of course B. F. Skinner are also included. Finally, the book's highlights cover Abraham Maslow, a founder of humanistic psychology as well as George Miller, one of the founders of cognitive psychology. The text ends with a look to the future for psychology and contemporary issues for the subject. Previously, I only used this textbook as a reference for courses I was taking; however, I consider this textbook a great credit to Eric Shiraev's works. If I teach this course in the future, I will be honored to use it as the principal text.

Slightly more informative than an intro to psych book

This book was an incredible disappointment. Though I give Shiraev credit for attempting breadth, his efforts left the details in shambles. This text is a hodgepodge collection of facts (sometimes incorrect) which are barely held together with weak speculations and a narrative tone fit for an elementary school read-along session. At times, his seemly random focus reduced many theories to momentary blurbs at the cost of overelaboration on tidbits of biography and biased personal statements. Shiraev's intelligence is not in question, though he should consider firing his editor for allowing numerous mistakes to go unchecked.
The biggest disappointment of this book is the fact that the "Global Perspective" was not present. Though he mentions other non-Western cultures and nations periodically, the contributions of other nations and cultures were typically limited to a single obligatory paragraph at best. I understand that language barriers are problematic, but if a writer promises a "Global Perspective" an honest attempt should be made to meet that claim. Sadly, this was not the case.
I would not recommend this book to anyone, unless you need a poorly done introduction to psychology review.

Large amount of material that is given in an ok manner. Don't know why my professor made me get it if he's not guna go in chronological order. It's probably a good textbook if you have a better professor that uses it correctly

About the Author

Hal Portner is a former K-12 teacher and administrator. He was assistant director of the Summer Math Program for High School Women and Their Teachers at Mount Holyoke College, and for 24 years he was a teacher and then administrator in two Connecticut public school districts. From 1985 to 1995, he was a member of the Connecticut State Department of Education’s Bureau of Certification and Professional Development, where, among other responsibilities, he served as coordinator of the Connecticut Institute for Teaching and Learning and worked closely with school districts to develop and carry out professional development and teacher evaluation plans and programs. Hal developed and teaches for Western New England University a 3 credit MEd in Curriculum and Instruction online core course in Mentoring, Coaching, and professional development.

Portner writes, develops materials, trains mentors, facilitates the development of new teacher and peer-mentoring programs, and consults for school districts and other educational organizations and institutions. In addition to Mentoring New Teachers, he is the author of Training Mentors Is Not Enough: Everything Else Schools and Districts Need to Do (2001), Being Mentored: A Guide for Protégés (2002), Workshops that Really Work: The ABCs of Designing and Delivering Sensational Presentations (2005), and editor of Teacher Mentoring and Induction: The State of the Art and Beyond (2005) – all published by Corwin Press. He holds an MEd from the University of Michigan and a 6th-year Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in education admin­istration from the University of Connecticut. For three years, he was with the University of Massachusetts EdD Educational Leadership Program.

"Mentoring" is of great use in the private sector: MIS

I am responsible for overseeing the implementation and maintenance of several important aspects of the Management Information System for a large multi-national company. Among other things, my job involves training and mentoring a sizable staff of MIS specialists; some veterans, others new to the field or to our company. Although I am not a teacher, I read "Mentoring New Teachers" by Hal Portner hoping to gain some insights on how to do this part of my job. Since many of the discussions, exercises and tips in the book seemed to relate directly to my situation, I decided to try them out. I was not disappointed! Especially useful were the chapters that dealt with establishing and maintaining productive mentoring relationship, and on how to coach employees in such a way that they gain the confidence and understandings to act productively on their own. I expect "Mentoring New Teachers" is very helpful to teachers, but I also highly recommend Portner's book as a "must read" to my counterparts in the private sector.

Good Book, Timely Information

Frank D. Aquila presents a timely book on the subject of School Law. The book is arranged, like most other school law texts, thematically, presenting cases in four parts: Policy Issues, Students' Rights, Teachers' Rights, and Legal Aspects of Schools. Issues are subdivided into individual chapters. For example: Policy Issues includes chapters on Desegration, Church-State Interaction and No Child Left Behind. Each chapter includes thorough discussions of the most notable "landmark cases" with which we should all be familiar. Additionally, examples of lesser known cases, and even hypothetical cases with discussion questions, facilitate discussions of basic principles in each chapter.

This is a newer text (copyright 2008), including currently relevant topics such as Contract Liability, Tort Liability, Financing and Use of Public Funds, Violence in Schools, and Internet Issues. In addition, there are useful introductions to the legal system and to legal research, online website access to those cases Mr. Aquila has cited, even a map showing U.S. Federal Court Districts. Appendices include Selected Portions of the U.S. Constitution(those relevant to education, of course) and a Table of Authorities linking specific cases to their locations within the text. The glossary includes clear explanations of relevant legal terms. In short, all the things I remember having to go to other sites to research when I took School Law.

I found the book to be well-organized, comprehensive, easy to navigate, and easy to understand. I would recommend this to any teacher or student of School Law.

Do not buy this book from the kindle store

I am really disappointed in Amazon.com Kindle Store (Kindle for Mac) I am having so much trouble reading the charts and the Important Concepts. I can not accurately give a review of this book yet because it is so difficult to read that I am actually thinking of going out and buying the book and going to try to get my money back. Yes I know.... Good luck. I will attempt to read it unfortunately it is for a class I am taking, but I am seriously disappointed with Amazon.com. My suggestion is don't buy this from the Kindle Store if you have to buy it.

I believe that the approach used in this text can help students build a foundation to “do” marketing. The approach taken for this text offers a more tangible approach to marketing than the more abstract approaches of other texts. (Don Roy)

This text book has a good balance by including the quantification of marketing metrics via a customer orientation focus. It is done in a very understandable and usable manner. It would eliminate my having to bring in outside materials that are time consuming and costly and eliminate the student’s questioning why I am using the text if I have to supplement it so much and only refer to it versus dealing with the content. There is no other text on the market that closely parallels marketing practice as closely as this one. The existing texts are all pretty much a rehash of the original Kotler with some updating over the decades, and some entertainment. About the Author

Kenneth Clow is a Professor of Marketing and holds the Biedenharn Endowed Chair of Business in the College of Business Administration at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Previously, he served as Dean at both the University of Louisiana at Monroe and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He teaching career began at Pittsburg State University where he also served as the MBA Director. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1992.

Dr. Clow has published a total of 190 articles in academic journals and proceedings and has written 13 textbooks. He has published articles in journals such as Journal of Services Marketing, Services Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Business Research, Marketing Management Journal, Journal of Economics and Finance Education, International Journal of Business, Marketing, and Decision Sciences, Journal of Internet Commerce, Health Marketing Quarterly, and Journal of Restaurant and Foodservices Marketing.

Books co-authored by Professor Clow include Integrated Advertising, Promotion, and Marketing Communications, 4th edition (Prentice Hall), Concise Encyclopedia of Advertising (Haworth), Essentials of Marketing, 3rd edition (Cengage), Services Marketing, 2nd edition (Atomic Dog), Concise Encyclopedia of Professional Services Marketing (Routledge, Taylor and Francis Group), The IMC PlanPro Handbook, and Marketing Management (SAGE).



Donald Baack holds the rank of University Professor of management at Pittsburg (Kansas) State University, where he has taught since 1988. He previously held positions at Southwest Missouri State University, Missouri Southern State College, and Dana College. Baack received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 1987. His primary area of study was Organization and Management Theory.

Professor Baack is a Consulting Editor for the Journal of Managerial Issues and has published in the journal. He has also published in Human Relations, Journal of High Technology Management Research, Journal of Ministry Marketing and Management, Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Customer Service in Marketing, Journal of Professional Services Marketing, Journal of Global Awareness, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Euromarketing, Journal of Nonprofit and Public Sector Marketing, and the Journal of Advertising Research.

Dr. Baack has authored Organizational Behavior (Dame), International Business (Glencoe/McGraw-Hill), and Integrated Advertising, Promotion, and Marketing Communications (Prentice Hall, co-author to Kenneth D. Clow). Clow and Baack also wrote the Concise Encyclopedia of Advertising (Haworth). Baack and his son Daniel W. Baack recently prepared a series of 10 modules entitled "Ethics Across the Curriculum" for Pearson Custom Publishing. He also published three popular press books in the area of romance/self help.

Baack has been active in the Southwest Academy of Management for many years, serving as its President in 1996. He was nominated for SWAM's Distinguished Educator award in 2007 and 2008. He is married (Pamela) with three children.

Marketing management review

I found this book to be very reader friendly with the right focus - on the customer. It is an excellent textbook for Marketing Management at the undergraduates level. The pictures and graphics are superb, the contents very contemporary, and the examples pertinent to the subject matter. The fact that all topic are dealt with from a management decision making perspective, with deal with the financial implication of marketing decisions make this book very practical, and not just another theoretical text.

About the Author
Michelle Inderbitzin primarily studies prison culture, juvenile justice, and transformative education. She has published papers in Punishment & Society, Journal of Adolescent Research, The Prison Journal, Journal of Offender Rehabilitation, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, and Criminology & Public Policy, and is currently working on research about prison education, broadly defined. Dr. Inderbitzin earned her PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington and has been a faculty member at Oregon State University since 2001. Along with her on campus classes on crime and deviance, she regularly teaches classes and volunteers in Oregon’s maximum-security prison for men and in state youth correctional facilities. 

Kristin A. Bates is a Professor of Sociology and Criminology & Justice Studies at California State University, San Marcos. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington where she concentrated in criminology and social control. She has been teaching Juvenile Delinquency in both large and small sections for over 20 years. Her research is in the area of inequality and social justice, with a specific focus on issues of race and social control. Her current research project with Richelle Swan is looking at gang injunctions’ impact on the community in Southern California. She is the co-editor of Through the Eye of Katrina: Social Justice in the United States (2nd edition) (with Richelle Swan), and co-author of Deviance and Social Control: A Sociological Perspective (2nd edition) and Perspectives in Deviance and Social Control (with Michelle Inderbitzin and Randy Gainey).

 



Randy Gainey is Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University. He has coauthored several books focused on family violence, deviance and social control, and policing drug use. His recent research has focused on sentencing, neighborhood organizations as controllers or enablers of deviance, and the use of electronic monitoring with GPS for supervising high risk sex offenders and high risk gang offenders on parole. He earned his PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington in 1995 and has been a faculty member at Old Dominion University ever since.

Perhaps the best text book I have ever read in any discipline. Concepts explained in very simple terms with easy to understand real life examples. Everyone should read through this book whether they need it for a class or not.

About the Author
Matthew Jennings is currently the superintendent of schools for the Alexandria Township Public School System. Prior to serving in this position, Jennings served as an assistant superintendent of schools, a director of student services, a supervisor of curriculum and instruction, and a classroom teacher. In addition to presenting at numerous state and national conferences, Jennings has served as an organizational behavior consultant to school districts throughout New Jersey. He works as an adjunct professor for Rutgers University, where he teaches courses on curriculum development, school administration, and the supervision of instruction. His work has been published in Kappan, Preventing School Failure, the New Jersey English Journal, Channels, and The Writing Teacher. His most recent publication, Leading Meetings, Teams and Work Groups in Schools and Districts, was released by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development in June of 2007. He earned his master's degree and doctorate in educational administration from Rutgers University.

About the Author
Wayne K. Hoy received his B. S. from Lock Haven State College in 1959 and then taught mathematics at Cheltenham High School in Pennsylvania. He received his D. Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University in 1965 and began his professorial career at Oklahoma State University. He moved to Rutgers University in 1968, where he was a distinguished professor, department chair, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. In 1994, he joined the faculty at The Ohio State University as an endowed professor, The Novice G. Fawcett Chair in Educational Administration. In January of 2013, he retired and is now a professor emeritus at The Ohio State University. In 1973, he received the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching from Rutgers University; in 1987, he received the Alumni Award for Professional Research from the Rutgers University Graduate School of Education; in 1991, he received the Excellence in Education Award from The Pennsylvania State University; in 1992, he received the Meritorious Research Award from the Eastern Educational Research Association; in 1996, he became an alumni fellow of The Pennsylvania State University; in 2001 he received the Research Award from the Ohio State College of Education. He is past secretary-treasurer of the National Conference of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) and past president of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA). In November 2003, he received the Roald Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award in Educational Administration and in 2009 he was elected a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of 24 books in the fields of research and theory, educational administration, decision making, leadership, and instructional supervision. Three of his recent books are Instructional Leadership: A Research-based Guide to Learning in Schools (2013), with his wife Anita Woolfolk Hoy; Educational Administration: Theory, Research and Practice (2013), with Cecil Miskel; and Improving Instruction Through Supervision, Evaluation, and Professional Development (2014), with Michael DiPaola.

About the Author
Consulting Description

Jennifer Abrams is an international educational and communications consultant for public and private schools, hospitals, universities and non-profits. She trains and coaches teachers, administrators, nurses, hospital personnel and others on successful instructional practices, new employee support, supervision and evaluation, generational savvy, having hard conversations and effective collaboration skills.

In Palo Alto USD (Palo Alto, CA), Abrams led professional development sessions and provided new teacher and supervisor trainings at both the elementary and secondary level. From 2000-2011, she was lead coach for the Palo Alto-Mountain View-Los Altos-Saratoga-Los Gatos Consortium’s Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment Program.

In her educational consulting work, she has presented at annual conferences such as Learning Forward, ASCD, NASSP, and the New Teacher Center Annual Symposium, as well as at the Teachers’ and Principals’ Centers for International School Leadership. Her communications consulting in the health care sector includes training and coaching work at the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and Stanford Hospitals.

Her publications include Having Hard Conversations, published by Corwin Press in 2009, the chapter “Habits of Mind for the School Savvy Leader” in Art Costa’s and Bena Kallick’s book Learning and Leading with Habits of Mind: 16 Essential Characteristics for Success, and contributions to the book Mentors in the Making: Developing New Leaders for New Teachers published by Teachers College Press. Her most recent book with co-author Valerie Von Frank, Generational Savvy: How to be Effective with Educators of All Generations, was published by Corwin Press in 2013.

She considers herself a “voice coach,” helping others learn how to best use their voices, be it in a group, in front of a classroom, coaching a colleague, in a supervisory role and most recently in writing for the stage, as she does as a Board Member of the National New Play Network. Abrams holds a Master’s degree in Education from Stanford University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University.

An Outstanding Resource For School Administrators!

As a student in an Educational Leadership Master's Degree program I am preparing myself to become a school administrator. One of the things that concerns me most is how best to conduct conversations with staff when something difficult needs to be addressed. I purchased this book hoping it would help me prepare for this part of the job, and I am very glad that I did. Jennifer Abrams offers clear, specific and practical steps with excellent rationale and multiple, thorough examples for every step and situation. It is exactly what I needed to gain confidence in my ability to prepare for and conduct successful conversations with teachers I will supervise, mentor and evaluate. I have no doubt that I will reach for the book again and again as I need a resource not only for preparing for uncomfortable conversations, but in planning for well thought out post observation and evaluation meetings in general. Thank you, Jennifer, for this invaluable resource!

Excellent book on dealing with difficult conersations

Excellent book on handing difficult conversations. It focuses on difficult conversations in the educational system, but is useful in other situations. I recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their ability to handle difficult conversations successful.
